Magic and Mystery Fiction

Magic and mystery fiction go together.

This I have known forever, but Sherlock Holmes and the Egyptian Hall Adventure reminded me. The 1993 pastiche by the late Val Andrews has Holmes mixing it up with the legendary magicians J.N. Maskelyne, David Devant, and Buatier De Kolta. They were all real, and so was the Egyptian Hall, Maskelyne’s theater of magic in London.

Douglas Greene’s invaluable John Dickson Carr: The Man Who Explained Miracles refers frequently to the Maskelyne illusions as the source of plot gimmicks for many of Carr’s “impossible” mysteries.

Andrews’s plot is a bit murky and the killer never appears in the book until the unmasking, but Andrews had the atmosphere nailed. And well he should have. Andrews performed as a magician and ventriloquist in music halls under various names as well as writing dozens of works about magic.

None of the Canonical Sherlock Holmes stories features a magician or even a music hall background, but many pastiches do. (See “The Adventure of the MagicUmbrella” and The Amateur Executioner.) And many other mysteries, old and new, involve the magical arts. My own Sebastian McCabe was a street magician in Europe as a young man.

In fact, one could spend a lot of time and money assembling a collection of mystery novels and short story collections that feature magicians as major or minor characters. Pride of place in such a collection undoubtedly would go to Clayton Rawson’s five books about The Great Merlini.

A number of writers have put Houdini himself into the role of amateur sleuth (sometimes in combination with Sherlock Holmes or Arthur Conan Doyle).  My favorite Houdini mysteries come from the fertile mind of Daniel Stashower.

Now my wife and I are preparing roll out a series of mysteries featuring Benjamin Elias Sterling, a magician and ventriloquist on the Keith circuit in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He, too, was a real person – and Ann’s grandfather.

The strongest connection between magic and mystery fiction, however, is in the writing of the latter. Just like an illusionist, the mystery writer practices the art of misdirection – hiding clues in plain sight by distracting the reader’s attention elsewhere.

Not every fictional detective is a magician, but every mystery writer is.

Text Neck: Checking Your Phone While Sparing Your Posture

This is not sexy.
Your phone buzzes. You pick it up to see a new text message from your friend. As you read the message, you look down at your hands like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, some of us spend the majority of the day in this position, at a computer desk, scrolling through Instagram, or even reading a book. As a result of these recurring movement patterns, the anterior muscles become excessively tight and chronically active, while the posterior muscles are long and under-active. This is the start of neck pain and potential cervical disk herniations down the line. (No bueno.)

Any type of corrective exercise you do to improve your posture will be for naught if you do not change your daily habits, as well.
This is serious business. Don't end up like the last guy.

There are a few different alternatives to combat this and create lasting postural changes. Here are two different ideas of how you can stay "on the grid" while simultaneously sparing your neck!
  1. Hold your phone higher, or use a standing work station. Instead of looking down at the screen, you can get a nice little isometric exercise for the shoulders by holding your phone at eye level. If your office allows for it, buy one of those standing desks so that you don't have to slouch in a chair all day.
  2. I prefer to write all of my blog posts in the Cobra pose...
  3. Try the Cobra position if you're at home (or if you have a really low key office where your coworkers won't look at you like you're a complete lunatic). This allow you to actually reverse the conventional hunched position and get some extension in the thoracic spine. Plus, this position is great for building a foundation of shoulder stability.
Both of these positions allow you to maintain good posture as you read your e-mails.

Don't spend hours doing hundreds of corrective exercises, expensive physical therapists or chiropractors, and then proceed to look down at your phone all day. You will undo all of your (and your manual therapist's) hard work.

Remember that your body remembers patterns and repetition, so the position in which you spend the majority of your time is the one to which your brain will revert. You can crack your neck and stretch until the cows come home, but none of those changes will have any lasting impact without first considering your day-to-day habits and positions.

The 5 Secrets to Fitness Success

Secrets to Fitness Success
Let’s be honest, in our business we get to hear a lot of excuses whey people don’t exercise. “I’m too tired after work,” “I have too many kids, or my favorite, “I’m just too busy!” While to some extent this are valid reasons as I understand the difficulty of navigating a busy lifestyle especially when there are others that rely on you. However, I have also found that perhaps many of these people don’t understand the secrets to living a healthy life. The truth is; they really aren’t secrets.

1: You don’t have to be a bodybuilder to workout.

Many people I know are afraid to come to a gym or join a class because they are out of shape or more appropriately, don’t like their shape. It is this fear that keeps many from becoming the person they really want to be. It is important to realize that not one bodybuilder started out ripped. Every fitness class instructor had to work hard to get in the physical condition to lead those classes. Trust me, try running around for 30 minutes to an hour while talking. We all start somewhere, and there is no shame in where you start. The hardest part is stepping in the door, the rest becomes history.

2: You don’t have to workout 5 hours a day to be in shape.

So you made it through the door and you hear someone saying, “I could do this all day.” A quick shiver runs through your body and you’re just about to turn around. Stop! The Mayo Clinic advises that most adults need only about 30 minutes of exercise per day. While this may still seem like a lot in the beginning, you don’t have to start there.

The secret is consistency. Start with 10 minutes, but do it every day. Whether it is walking, jogging, lifting weights, swimming or whatever you like the most, just do it every day. If you are consistent you will start to see results and you’ll start to like it, which means before you know it you will probably be exercising more than 30 minutes a day just because it is fun.

3: You’re not like everyone else.

Shocking, I know, but you are unique and special, just like everyone else is. This means that the best fitness plan for you will be different from those around you. You need realize that you can do great things but you need to focus your energy on what works best for you. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many people trying to do too much or even too little just trying to be like someone else. Be you and see what happens.

4: You won’t lose 50 pounds overnight.

I have to admit, it would be awesome that after a week we could all shed 50 pounds and become the lean machine we’ve always wanted to be. Our bodies don’t work that way. You need to set realistic goals that are attainable. The first goal may be as simple as, “I’m going to exercise 10 minutes a day for 20 days straight.” Make a plan and reach your goal. Perhaps, “I want to be able to walk this trail to the top with having to stop.” These are both great goals that are attainable. As you advance in your training, you will continue to make goals.

5: The Secret to Fitness is No Secret

These may seem like very obvious points and for the most part they are. Like anything great that is achieved in life it depends on your focus, dedication and your plan. Our personal trainers understand how hard it is to get out of bed some mornings. They too have felt the struggle to get up and run. They know how it feels to rebound when they didn’t always meet their goals. We are here to help you become who you want to be.

If you don’t know where to start or if you just need help devising a fitness plan that meets your needs, call us. Jean-Robert's Gym is meant to be a place of health and a safe place to get there. We’ll be happy to help. You can do this. You just have to start.
