The Hump Day Blog Hop!

Happy Hump Day everyone! We are halfway through the week and the hump day camel is too freaking cool, so lets have some fun and a blog hop to celebrate.

This is a little different than a link up. To participate, simply add your blog link. There is no required entry or anything like that. This is about networking, making new friends, and finding new blogs.

All I ask:
1) "The Hump Day" blog hop button button be displayed anywhere on your blog page or a specific entry with a link back to me or the weekly co-host. (Please do this. These blog hops take a lot of work and preparation.)
2) You don't have to follow me, but in the words of Blake Shelton: it'd sure be cool if ya did.
3) Please follow the co-host. I love helping and promoting these amazing women in the blog world! I do this to not only meet new people, but help my friends make new friends and readers.
4) Mingle with your fellow Bloggers.

Dude, Where's My Womb?

Bitches, let’s rap. We need to discuss a subject that’s a bit…well, serious. Sit down. Do you now, or have you ever, felt anxious, short-tempered, or emotional?  Have you perhaps experienced insomnia or a loss of appetite? Do you have a general “tendency to cause trouble?” I suspected you might. Ladies, it’s time you learned about a rampant “disease” that’s been plaguing women for thousands of years, Female Hysteria (or as George said, “More like her-steria!” High-five, buddy!). Don’t be afraid; I'm here to answer each and every one some of your questions. First up…

Unutmayın bir ingiliz sözü şöyle der '' if something is to good to be true its to good to be true'' anlamına internetten bakabilirsiniz.

More Cooking Booklets

My last antique excursion found me walking out with two more cookbook pamphlets! I don't know why I am addicted to them, perhaps because they are so much more colorful than cookbooks from the same era.
Some day you are going to see me listed in the Guineas Book of World Records for the largest collection......
First up we have the Hershey's cookbook copyright 1940. I love the glimpse we get of a "modern" kitchen!
 All the basic chocolaty goodness.
Sour Cream Cocoa Cookies caught my eye. Looks very interesting. I will let you know when I get around to trying them!

Love their slogan! I have a reprint of this cookbook from the 1970s. Most of the recipes look the same. But how can you go wrong with a bit of chocolate!

I found this one very interesting. What caught my eye was the colorful illustrations inside.
I love to read recipes for sandwiches. They were so inventive then! Though some do not sound good at all.

APRIL 1 = April "Fools" Day

OK.... I am NOT going to plaster a bunch of silly business up here attempting  to tell you that Martians have just landed in Branson, Missouri, that the Major League Baseball season has been cancelled, or even that Kate Perry is going to allow people who work backstage at her shows to speak to her. No I promise that this is going to be a straightforward and fairly brief rundown on the origins of this goofy tradition called "April Fools Day" which comes up every April 1.  The fact is that nobody really knows for sure where it came from.  Researching it on the web one comes across almost as many sources claiming to be true in one spot, while being dismissed out of hand in another spot as I found in researching the Black Dahlia.  But there is one account which seems to come up most often as being the likely source of this whole crazy business, so that is the one on which I will concentrate.  If you find yourself dissatisfied, LOOK ELSEWHERE!!

The King Charles IX and the French Connection

NO, NO NO!!!  Not THAT  "French Connection!" I'm talking about a much earlier French Connection.  I am referring to the connection between Charles IX and this "April Fools" nonsense!  You see, Charles IX reigned as King of France from 1560 until his death by choking on red balloons (APRIL FOOLS!) in 1574.  Well it seems that in that early 16'th Century period in France, New Years Day was observed on March 25 with a massive variety show on late night TV (APRIL FOOLS... get it??).  OK, "seriously", that is the way they rung in the New Year in France back then, to coincide with the advent of spring.  The big party would run for a week and would include a lot of gift exchanges, and would end on April 1 with fancy dinners and yet more parties... I know that this sounds like the origins of Spring Break, but this part is for real!! Around about 1564, France adopted the reformed and more accurate Gregorian calender, and our new friend King Charles IX (that's him below left.... really.. I know that he looks kind of silly, but... OH, never mind!! ANYWAY....) proclaimed that his people were to celebrate their New Years on January 1, like everyone else.  Many of his subjects objected to this change in their partying habits. Others just.... "forgot" (HA!!) and kept right on with their week long March to April bash. What can I say??

Some of the French Keep on Partying ANYWAY............

A lot of these more stick-in-the-muddy-old-ways types of Frenchmen found themselves the butt of jokes for their attachment to the old way of partying. Sometimes this ridicule would take the form of obviously foolish gifts (stocks in "Solyndra" perhaps??), as well as invitations to parties that were not really happening, and that sort of thing.  The butt of these barbs was called a "poisson d'Avril", the "April fish", because this coincided with the Zodiac sign of Pisces, the fish. In time, all events that occurred on April 1 came under this dubious honorific title.  Even Napoleon I, the "great" Napoleon (!) came to be nick-named "April fish" (though not, I am guessing , to his face) because of his April 1, 1810 wedding to Marie Louise of Austria (whose relatives really deserved the April FOOL title for setting her up with that crummy marriage). Eventually when these French folks became more accustomed to the New Years on January 1 idea, they kept the April 1 as "April Fools Day" as a kind of let's have fun with this tradition.  Nes pas?? And it time this whole thing spread like a pestilence from France to England from whence over time it came over here to America wherein it was enshrined on various Public Broadcasting Stations in the 1970's as Monty Python's Flying Circus. So there it is.... "roit Bruce?"

Way Too Cool 50k

I was picked up from my house at 3:30 am. Yes, that is A.M. This is what happens when you catch a ride with other people; you have no control over the timelines. Ha! The reason for this was that we were driving to Cool, CA to run the Way Too Cool 50k. To get into this race, you have to put your name in a lottery. When I received the notice that I got in, I was so excited, and I went to the entrants list to find out who else had gotten in that I know. There were 1200 entrants on the list! This is not normal for a trail race. Usually it is anywhere from 200 - 600 people. I have to admit, I had to groan at this a bit, because this is a lot of (too many) people. However, I was excited to run in a place where I had only run a couple of times before. Plus, part of this course is on the Western States course, which is kind of fun.

Cool is in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 20 miles from Sacramento, near the American river, in a gold mining area. It was a stagecoach stop during the gold rush.  It's a really pretty area and there are tons of trails to hike, and swimming and fishing in the river to be had.

We arrived in Cool before 6 am. We got a great parking spot, thanks to the early departure, and went to pick up our bibs etc. I was there with two other people, one who was running and another who had not signed up, but was going to wear the bib (without chip) of a friend and run with the other friend for a while. It was pretty cold so we stayed in the car to keep warm until the start. Once the sun came out, we got ready to go. This race has so many people that there is a wave start. I was in wave one, which started at 8 am.

The race started and we were all running in a pack. There were so many people; we could not really run any faster or slower; we just had to scoot along with everyone else. I stopped for a pit stop and then caught back up to my friends. The first mile was on a paved road and then it turned into a single track. The single track was brutal, as there really was no room to pass. I was going at about a 10 minute mile, which was slower than I wanted to go, especially since it was fairly flat.

Around mile 3, we went through our first water crossing for the day. It would not be the last. It had rained the week before and the creeks were running full, and the trail was very, very muddy. Everyone was slipping and sliding around and trying to avoid the really big, slippery sections, but it was difficult. The single track loop lasted for about 8 miles, then we looped back around to the start.

The next loop started out kind of flat, then there was a downhill section leading down to the river, where we ran along the river for a while. My legs were getting tired, as by this time, I had been running for a while. This course was so far the flattest trail race I had ever run. Usually there are some ups and some downs, which give you a chance to regroup a bit and regain your strength, but this was flat our running for a really long time. Until about mile 15, I was running about an 8:30 pace.

At mile 15, we started up a hill and my pace slowed to about 10 minutes, then as the hill got steeper, it became 13 minutes, then 16 minutes. Around mile 15, I also started to have to use the restroom, but I thought that at the next aid station there would be a portapotty. There wasn't, so I waited until the next one. Still nothing. By mile 26 or so, I was bursting. I would have just pulled over and gone in the bushes, but there was poison oak everywhere! Around mile 20, the hill stopped and the course flattened out a bit. It was rolling up and down a little, but was still pretty runnable the whole time. My legs were pretty tired by this point and I started to slow to about a 12 minute pace. The only reason I was even keeping it that fast was because I really had to use the bathroom!

I crossed the finish at 5:12 and ran straight to the portapotties, do not pass go, do not collect $200! Afterward, I went back to the race expo, where there was recovery drink, pizza, and the famous frog cupcake! The day had turned out really nice and it was really great to just sit in the sun and eat pizza. I hung out for a while and chatted with some of the other racers.

The verdict? I don't think I would do this race again. The sheer number of people is a turn off. It feels commercial. I didn't really like the big expo full of people trying to sell things after the race. However, the shirt is great and the food afterward was pretty good. The location is good and if you are brave, you can even go for a dip in the river afterward. Also, I feel that it would be a great race for your first 50k. Its well organized and there is not too much elevation gain and it's almost like a road race feel in a trail-like setting.

Also, unless you are super fast, it is really hard to place in this race! I was number 11 in my age group, 203/1026 overall, and 41/422 in my gender. The number one guy finished in 3:16; the number one girl finished in 3:53.

Have you ever been to gold rush country? Do you like it when a race has a big expo? What is your favorite treat after a workout?
