Wine Country Half Marathon

Remember I said that the Broski was talking about running another half? Let me tell you why. When we decided to run the Cloverdale Half, we did it only because the race we wanted, The Wine Country Half, was full already. It wasn't heartbreaking or a difficult decision; it was quick and easy to pick a different harvest related race, since Broski works in the wine country and so not only does this mean it is fun to do it on his home turf, but secondly, he is also busy with harvest and so it makes sense to do something closer to him at this time.

So we ran the Cloverdale Half as planned. The next day, Broski's friend Dave, who owns a winery in the area, said that he was running his first half and had put together a team for his winery and still had a couple of spots open. So, in the typical crazy runner fashion, Broski and I decided to fill the empty slots.

First of all, let me say that Dave ROCKED his first half! He finished in under 2 hours! We ran together for most of the time and it was great to get to know him and to be a part of his first big race! Second, I must mention how much I love hanging out with Broski and the Lady Friend. I always go up and stay the night and we have great times cooking, eating, drinking and hanging out.

Unfortunately, this time, Broski was nursing a cold and a fever, so he ate and went to bed early to try to be at his best for the next day. Lady Friend and I stayed up and shot the breeze for a little while. We solved the world's problems, planned a trip to Vegas and decided that we are going to create our own Thanksmas Holiday where we don't have to fight the crowds on our special day. It's sure is nice to know people who make wine, let me tell you. I had to sample the wine from the winery that I would be running for the next day!

The race couldn't have been better. The weather was perfect at the beginning. The course started off in Geyserville with a huge hill, which really separated the men from the boys right from the get go! It then meandered around with some twists and turns and ups and downs, much of it through the vineyards, which are beautiful and all fall colored!

We all ran together until mile 9, when Broski's fever/cold started to catch up to him. By this time, he must have drank 40 oz of water, and it was starting to get hotter. Plus the shirts that Dave gave us to wear were cotton and black and they were hot! We both took off our shirts and kept plugging on, but we had to do some walk breaks up the hills (and there were a lot of them!) It got warmer and we drank more water and tackled more hills until mile 12 or so, when the course went into downtown Healdsburg for the finish.

We finished in 2:06, which was a little over Broski's goal of under 2 hours, but that just means that he needs to try again! I think he did very well, especially since he (a) ran his first half marathon LAST weekend, (b) has only run a long run distance of 8 miles before this and (c) was battling a cold/fever! We also started off a little fast and therefore pooped out a bit early (but like I said before, you have to learn this on your own sometimes).

Afterward, we got a wine glass, some snacks and some red licorice (my opinion? they should have this at every race) and our choice of not only dozens of different wines to try, but Lagunitas beer as well! And the best thing of all? The medal is a wine stopper! Now that is what I call a great after party! So when is the next one?! Broski?

*This race is race number 11 in the 12 in 2012 challenge! Only one more race to go to make 12.

Have you ever tried exercising when you were under the weather? Have you ever run as part of a team? If you could design a fitness related item, what would it be?

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon [Episode 377] 1st November 2012 Written Update

Preview

Episode starts with Khushi saying to herself, Sheetal was looking at these photos which means she still hasn’t forgotten her past. Aarav comes there now and asks her, what are you searching for? Khushi says, I was searching for you. They talk with each other and in that Aarav says, I don’t have any problem with Arnav. He is cool unlike other family members. Khushi then goes to her room where Arnav also says same thing that Aarav is very different and pretty cool. Arnav says, I am thinking to take Saturday off so I can spend more time with Aarav. Khushi is getting nervous and by mistakely she passes her clothes to Arnav. Arnav asks her, are you alright?

Everyone has gathered outside in the living room. Sheetal is checking Aarav’s school stuff and she tells him, do you know next week is parents day in your school. Aarav says, I know and I won’t go that day in school. Sheetal asks, why not? You’re new to this school so you have to go. Aarav says, fine I will go but only on one condition.. you will have to tell me whose my father. Whenever there is a parents day, everyone asks me there about my father. Sheetal says, I am your mother and I am your father. Aarav gets mad and shouts at Sheetal saying, you told me you will introduce me to my father when we come to Delhi, then where is he now? I knew you won’t tell me.. you all are bad people. He gets mad and starts throwing all stuff around. He leaves from there. Nani asks Sheetal, why don’t you tell him about his father? Sheetal says, it’s not in my control.. if I could then I would have told him long time ago.

Khushi goes to Aarav’s room where he’s playing loud music so he cannot hear her or anyone else’s voice. Khushi doesn’t care.. and she talks loudly with him. Aarav’s keep increasing volume. Khushi also raise her voice. In end Aarav gives up and turns off the music. Khushi is still screaming and saying, no matter what I won’t go until I talk with you. She now realizes he has turned off the music already and she shuts herself up. Aarav tells her, you don’t need to make me happy.. I am fine. And when my mum and dad, whom I have never met, don’t care about me, then why do you worry about me? Khushi says, worry about you? No No. I came to ask you for help. But if your mood is not good, then it’s okay. She is leaving and then she stops. She says, but I always thought that whether anyone else help me or not… you will always help me. But if your mood is not fine, then it’s okay. Aarav seems like he wants to help but he doesn’t say anything and Khushi leaves. He turns on music again.

Khushi is trying to plant some trees. Nani and Anjali wonder what she is trying to do. Aarav comes there and sees Khushi struggling. Nani and Anjali smile and leave from there. Khushi is not sure what to do. Aarav comes to her and says, move from here.. I will do it. Khushi says, no thanks. I know how to do. Aarav tells her, don’t say that again and move fast else plants will die. Aarav sits down beside her and teaches her how to plant trees properly. Khushi smiles and says in her mind, finally at least he got something to do by and is happy. Sheetal comes there now and tells Aarav, I brought colors for you. Aarav says to her, I don’t want it. I am fine. Khushi leaves from there.

Sheetal apologizes to Aarav. Aarav also apologizes to her. He says, but I am still angry at you. Sheetal kisses him on his forehead and says, you should understand that whatever I am doing is for your good. I don’t have answers to some of questions and it’s better if you don’t find out some stuff. Aarav says, mum please.. I just want to meet my dad once.. after that I won’t bother you. Sheetal says, promise? fine then.. I will introduce him to you. Aarav gets happy and asks where we will meet? Sheetal says, in a cafe. Aarav gets happy and thanks her.

Arnav is in office and he is just thinking about how Aarav was angry and was throwing stuff around. He cannot concentrate on his work and calls Khushi. He asks her, how is Aarav now. Khushi tells him he’s better now.

It’s evening now. Sheetal is standing alone and is very sad. Arnav and Khushi go to her. Sheetal apologizes to them for Aarav’s behaviour. Arnav says to her, if you don’t mind then can I tell you something? He says, I know there must be some reasons and that’s why you’re not telling him about his father, but it’s a big thing for someone with Aarav’s age not knowing about his father. Khushi also agrees with Arnav. Arnav says, we really feel if you tell Aarav about his father, then he will handle things in a better way. Khushi says, Aarav is understanding.. he will understand and now he has rights to know who is his father.. no matter who it is. Arnav also says, I am sure he will handle.

Break 1..

Sheetal says, when Aarav was young.. he wasn’t going to playground.. because everyone else’s dads were coming with them. So I set play area outside our home. I tried my best to be his mother and father as well…. but I failed.. I could never become his dad. And I know when Aarav finds out about his dad.. his problems will increase. Arnav says, I seriously feel that he will handle. Sheetal says, no I can’t tell about his father.. and my one decision will affect many people’s lives. I can’t spoil others lives for my happiness. Sheetal leaves from there.

It’s next day now. Everyone is in the living room. Aarav comes there with two shirts and seems very excited. He asks everyone which shirt should I wear? Everyone wonders what happened to him. Khushi tells him, wear the one you want. Aarav says, no please tell me na. Anjali tells him, wear the brown one. He says, good idea.. I was thinking for the same one.

Break 2..

Aarav now asks for Arnav and Aakash. Khushi tells him, they went to office. Nk asks him, why .. are you missing them? He says, kind of. He then tells Payal to make some nice food for him. Khushi gets shocked seeing his good behaviour. She goes to him and asks, tell me what’s going on in your mind? Aarav says, nothing. Khushi says, I don’t believe you. Aarav says, I am in good mood today because I am going somewhere. Khushi asks where? Before he says anything, Sheetal comes there with his school uniform and asks him to get ready. Aarav asks, why school uniform? Do you remember we have to go somewhere? Sheetal says, yes we will see that later but for now you get ready. Aarav is getting sad.. and says, you said we’re going to see dad. Khushi gets happy knowing that.

Episode ends.

Precap:

Sheetal is on the phone with principal and tells her, I have sent money cheque with Aarav.. please collect it from him. She then says, what? Aarav didn’t come to school. Raizada family is shocked.

Home Sweet Home

Yes, indeed! I have joined the ranks of happy home owners! You don't know how hard to was not share the news with you friends. But, it was a HUD house and every week I was sure the whole deal was going to fall through. Thank goodness, I am done with that and it is officially mine!
We call it the "little house". It reminds me so much of a little cottage. Don't you think I should name it? Built in 1923, it is a one and a half story bungalow with three bedrooms.
This little gem hasn't really been updated since the 1950s when the kitchen and bath were done. Of course, that means there is a lot that needs to be done. The floors need to be refinished, carpet pulled up (including some in the kitchen!), walls painted, insulation put in, more walls painted, the bathroom re-done, trim painted, kitchen cabinets painted.
Please bear with me if my posts get a bit waylaid...... Life is going to be crazy! I am not sure you will hear much about aprons.....I have paint colors, plumbing fixtures, curtains, tile flooring, hardware, sinks, light fixtures and decorating ideas filling my head!
But I will take you all along on the journey! Are you ready for a lot of do-it-yourselfing and decorating?! I have decided to post the before and afters room by room as I get them done, instead of one massive picture post.
One of my favorite features is the front door. Yes, it is original. Even the door knob!

Then and Now: October

Another month over, another month closer to a new year. October was a fun filled month and I love sitting down and looking for photos to put on my monthly round up. However, as I was sorting photos to do this post, I got a little sad. Last year in October, I went to California, Missouri, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and New York. This year, I went to....California, and I didn't even move around very much. Comparing the two years makes me realize where I am doing things differently. Sometimes this is a good thing and other times it makes me realize that there are areas where I need to get back on track.

Without further ado, here are the Who, the What and the Where of October 2011 vs October 2012.

THE WHO:

In 2011, I got around.
I hung out with the Parentals, the East Coast family, running friends,
work friends and high school friends.

In 2012, it was local family all the way.
I even accidentally ran into some of them at a Giants game!
I also spent time with my favorite girls and some new friends too!
(The bagpipe player is my cousin. He can wail on that thing!)

THE WHAT:

Running Miles:
2011: 147 / 2012: 149

In 2011, I was ramping up for my first marathon, so I was putting in a lot of training miles for that. In 2012, I was busy doing more races with only a few miles thrown in on the weeks between. Raced miles counted as about 40% of all miles run this month.

Races:
2011: 2 / 2012: 4

In 2011, I did the cupcake classic (virtual race) and The Green Stride Half in MA. This year, October was the month of races and I had a race every weekend of three different lengths! They took me to Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Cloverdale and San Francisco! See my races page for more info.

Reading:
In 2011, I read a whopping 7 books, my favorite probably being The Hunger Games or Room. In 2012, I read three books and all of them were about running. None of them knocked my socks off. Check out my bookshelf for more info.

THE WHERE:

2011:
Home, Newport RI, NYC, Missouri, Cambridge MA

2012:
Oakland, San Francisco, Marin Headlands, Sonoma County

The Verdict? Like I said, last year I went all over the place, but this year I only went to the four places where I had races (see above). I am realizing I need to make some travel plans! However, this year, as far as the Who portion, I am really loving getting more time to spend with some of my favorite people, which I was not able to do as often when I was traveling for work. It's really nice to be able to do things with people on shorter notice (and more often) rather than having to make a big thing out of the times when I was home. I have been having lunches or brunches with friends and I am remembering how important those little half an hour visits here and there really are!

How has your year been different than last year? How has it been the same?

Tala Council Newsletter November 2012

Green Areas
A number of people have come forward volunteering to maintain the green area in their neighbourhood.  However, with the limited number of outside staff we have, there is a limit as to how much time we can spend on the remaining areas.  I think we are all keen to see green areas planted and maintained rather than unsightly dumping grounds, so we are still looking either for volunteers to take over their green area, or people willing to sponsor maintenance of specific green areas.  If you are interested, please contact the Council Office.

Kindergarten School
As you may be aware, the new Kindergarten School opened at the beginning of September.  There are 25  pupils.  The premises will shortly be blessed by the Bishop.

Following the Rat Pack Show, after payment of the usual rental fee,  a donation was made of €700 towards ‘something in Tala’.  This money is being used to purchase some play equipment at the new school.

Cemetery
As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are still awaiting a building permit for the new site and have no idea of timescale.  In the meantime, we have now completed the small extension of the old cemetery as a temporary short-term solution.

Post Office
Those of you who use the Post Office in Tala will have noticed that this has moved by only one unit into what were the offices for the old Co-Op Bank.  This has released the room formerly used by the Post Office so that the space can be used by the Welfare Centre.   This space will be used for exercise classes.

Sewerage
Recently there was a meeting at SAPA [Sewerage Board of Paphos] to agree the budget for 2013.  SAPA have decided that they wish Tala to start paying fees for the sewerage system from 2013 without stipulating any start date for such a project.  I objected strongly at the budget meeting but, unfortunately, I was outvoted.  The Council are refusing to accept this decision and are working to exclude Tala from the project completely or to postpone fee payment until a start date can be allocated.   I will keep you advised of developments.

Welfare Centre
[Next door to the Post Office, just up the road from the Stamna Restaurant]
For the winter months, the centre will be open Monday to Friday 8am to 1pm.
Membership entitles you to a free coffee, tea or soft drink and snack each day.

Monday -  Approx 10am Craft morning.  Anyone interested in crafts is welcome to come along and share their knowledge.  A knitting circle has already started
Tuesday - 9.30 for an hour – Gentle exercise class
Friday -  9.30 for an hour – Gentle exercise class

If there is sufficient interest a games morning will be started.  Please let the centre know if you are interested in participating.

There was a Bingo night at the centre at the end of October and in the middle of November and this will now become a regular occurrence, approximately once a fortnight.  Please watch for details either on the Council website or in the noticeboards around the village.

To assist those involved in the crafts, if you have any oddments of wool, ribbon, tapestry thread, etc,  material which is surplus to requirements, or any old cushions or pillows, please drop these off at the centre.  These will be recycled and made into items which will be supplied at future bazaars for fund-raising purposes.

To enrol for membership, please call into the centre. Membership is €20 per person, or €30 for  a couple and you should deduct any deposit already paid from this membership fee.

Garden Waste Site
Thanks to a number of volunteers coming forward, the garden waste site on the road down to Kissonerga reopened from Tuesday 13 November as follows:

Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings only – 9am to 11am

This will be for a trial period of 3 months to see how the experiment works and to see if other people come forward to volunteer a couple of hours of their time each week to allow the site to open.  Garden waste and household furniture can be accepted and you are please requested to ensure there are no large stones in amongst any garden waste and that it is emptied out of any plastic bags used to transport it to the site.

The site is open to Tala residents and their gardeners.  Please ensure you have a utility bill in your vehicle to show to the person manning the site.

Anyone wishing to volunteer a couple of hours of their time each week to enable the site to operate on additional days or for an extended period of time should please contact John Moffat on  moffat@logos.cy.net or 26 815388.

If you are unable to deliver garden waste or household furniture to the site yourself, or you have other items for collection, please contact the council office and they will organise uplift for a small fee.

Paphos Tigers Rugby Football Club
The Club is keen to encourage players of all ages, whether men, women or children.  If you are interested please contact either:
Dimitri on 99 573668 [adults]
Sue on 99 977235 [children – for minis & colts]

Any nationality is welcome and the Club is keen to have new members.  Please also see their website: www.paphostigers.com

WHAT’S ON

Saturday & Sunday 24 & 25 November – St Catherine’s Bazaar   1000-2000
Bazaar at the Welfare Centre to commemorate St Catherine’s Day.

Sunday 16 December - Christmas Bazaar including Artists Open Day
There will be a Christmas Bazaar at the Elementary School in Tala, from 1100 to 1600.  There will be a number of stalls, including one selling home made cakes, one for plants and a tombola, in addition to a number [including hand-made soaps, jewellery and chocolates] to tempt you with some Christmas shopping.   In addition, there will be an art display by various Tala artists, a visit by Father Christmas, carols, and various displays by the local school and societies.    Refreshments will also be available.   Funds raised will go towards an Astroturf pitch at the school and the welfare centre.

If you would like to volunteer your services to assist on the day, help run the tombola or refreshments, bake cakes for the refreshments and/or cake stall, please contact Cathi on toffee@primehome.com or 26 653132.  Similarly, if you have donations for the tombola, please either let Cathi know or drop any donation into the Council office.

A timetable of events on 16 December will be available on the website in due course.  If you do not have computer access, please watch for details in the Council Noticeboards or at the bars and restaurants around the village.

Also, please remember that this newsletter is available on www.tala.org.cy .  Click on the Union Jack and then announcements.  The next issue will be available on 21 February.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a healthy and happy  2013.
