Why Regular Exercise Is So Important and Can Add Years to Your Life Expectancy and Outlook on Life

Exercise is a fundamental part of life, more especially with the sophisticated lifestyle of modern times that has limited human movement. Time and again, people have found their overall fitness in trouble, thanks to inadequate exercise. Often, people give multiple reasons for their lack of exercise. One of these reasons is usually the diminishing exercising space, alongside lack of time. Mental Benefits Of Exercise

Science has taken us all to some amazing places over the years, and yet relatively little is known about the brain, and how it ages. While this most vital three-pound organ isn't technically a muscle, exercise has been shown to benefit both memory and other cognitive skills according to some new research on the . What's more, the exercise doesn't have to be something rigorous.

Experts do know that during late adulthood a part of the brain that's involved in memory, known as the hippocampus, begins to get smaller. Earlier work has shown that after a year of regular workouts this region grew in older adults. And the growth was joined with better memory.

In the latest work, 68 inactive middle aged subjects (men and women aged 40 to 56) were randomly assigned to either cycling or a stretching/coordination routine to be done for 2 hours a week for a period of 6 months, while 18 non active adults were used as a control group.

At the start of the research all the subjects underwent a heart test as well as tests measuring memory and other cognitive skills.

The stretching/coordination program started with a warm up, followed by work to make the major muscle groups of the body stronger. Coordination exercises were complex movements of both arms and legs to improve balance and the session ended with relaxation techniques.

Those assigned to cycling were told to work at the level of their target heart rate for around 45 minutes, ending up in a cool down. The fitness test from the start of the study gave them the target heart rate to use.

The exercisers were found to have improvements in both memory and other cognitive skills according to researchers.

The cyclists improved heart fitness by 15% while the inactive and stretching/coordination group had no discernible change in fitness level. But both exercising groups had improved performance on memory tests and learning than did the inactive group. The increase in the test scores was tied to the improvements in fitness.

A surprise? The stretching group did better on an attention test compared to the group that did the cycling. It was a paper based exam where you had to locate and mark specific letters as quickly as possible.

A strength of the study is how long the training went on for, subjects did (6 months), along with the emphasis on middle aged adults who often have concerns about memory issues. The take home message from the research is that being active is something is good for the brain and is something we can do to help ourselves stay sharp.

The study findings support earlier work which found inactive subjects who get active can help increase the blood flow to their brains, and they are then able to score higher on memory tests.

Sewing Notions

 In looking through my stash of vintage sewing things, I came across this needle card. Needle cards were a popular advertising item in the early part of the 20th century. It also made nice small gift for grandmothers, old aunties and schoolteachers. I believe this one is from the dime store Woolworth's. Judging from these ladies hair styles and dresses, it looks like it is from the early 1930s. I love how one side the ladies are sewing and on the other they are having tea.

Below are button cards given to me by my great-aunt.  The illustrations are beautiful! Some of my favorite vintage notions. Someday I will think of a really brilliant way to decorate with them. Right now they reside in a drawer.

Living and Learning

As you know, I have an interesting relationship situation. Let me quickly remind you, in case you forgot. 

Boy from MA. Girl from CA. Meet while working together in New Orleans. The situation is interesting, as in, neither are "in their element". Living out of a hotel does not give you a very good chance of learning who someone is completely (aka. are they messy? are they a hoarder? do they make their bed/wash their dishes/clean their toilet?) And yes, this matters.

2 months later Girl goes to South America for a year of travel. You would think this would be the end, but it's not. They keep in touch. Boy comes to visit a few times. When girl comes home, she goes to work in Iowa. Boy is still in New Orleans. They try to see each other when they can, which is usually once a month, in a city in the middle, where they are tourists, living in a hotel (aka. not real life). 

After several months of this, Girl gets a job in New Orleans again. For about a year, they both live in the same city. Sometimes in a hotel, sometimes in an apartment, but still, it is a temporary thing. After this, Boy and Girl decide to travel the world for a year, once again living in hostels, hotels, campervans and even a tent (that was an interesting situation). 

Boy and Girl get back home from traveling and go to their separate corners, him to MA, her to CA, where they have been ever since. They see each other every couple of months. 

BUT NOW: Boy and Girl are both in CA. Living together. In a house. Once again, it's temporary. It's strange to be together for more than a couple of days, and for more than once a month or once every couple of months. 

We are very different, but so far are making it work. How are we different? 

- He is not a good sleeper. I sleep like the dead. 
- He doesn't care where things are placed. I am a type A organizational freak. 
- He is spontaneous. I am a planner.
- He would rather pay for dinner out than cook and clean up. I let him. :)
- He splurges. I am frugal. 
- He is always hot. I am always cold. 
- He likes beer. I like water. 

We are also the same in many ways. 

- We both prefer savory over sweet. 
- We love taking after dinner walks.
- We both love photography. 
- We like looking at houses for sale even though we can't afford them.
- We both love exploring new places. 
- Food is important to both of us. 

I know that even though we have been together for almost 5 years, we still have a lot to learn about each other, not only the little things, like what is someone's favorite cake flavor, but also bigger things. We haven't really had the chance to go over all of our life goals, since we are always on the move. We are not going to figure it all out here either. We still have a ways to go, but I am looking forward to it!
