Albania - A Destination Not Spoiled by Tourism

For those that travel often, it is no secret that some of the most popular destinations to visit are tainted by the tourists that travel there. Many of these places begin to cater towards these visitors and much of the authentic vibe becomes quickly lost. However, there are places like Albania that escape this trap and remain true to their roots. These places are off the beaten path and remain unscathed by industrialization and tourism. If you'd like to visit a genuine destination, Albania is a great choice, just make certain that your passport is up to date. Keep in mind that you can get passports now online with little hassle.

Online services are a great way to get your documents because they offer many different services at the click of a button. For instance, you can often choose to renew an expired passport, replace a lost or stolen one, or even purchase an infant passport. Whatever your specific need is, the fact that you can do this 24 hours a day without having to stand in line is certainly going to save you time and stress.

When you visit Albania, you will quickly notice just how naturally beautiful the landscape is. This area is home to many different types of endangered species such as the Mediterranean Monk Seal and the Dalmatian Pelican. Since this country lies on both the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea, there are miles and miles of coast for you o enjoy yourself on. The coast is a great place to relax, get some sun, or even take a trip diving some of the underwater landscapes. If you think you might like a bit more exercise, you can always go hiking in the mountains for an afternoon picnic and look at the wildlife. Whatever your preference, you will find it in Albania.

Albania is full of many different archaeological sites for you to visit. Phoinike, Lissos, and Oricum are all places worth seeing on your trip. Phoinike existed long ago under the Epirus Kingdom. It was a very prosperous city for ten centuries and was even where the Macedonian War officially ended. Lissos was once occupied by Caesar and is a mountain top location overlooking a beautiful river. Oricum, also a city that thrived, has its own amphitheater that was used for entertainment. Regardless of where you go, you will not be able to help but appreciate the historical significance of almost every area you come across.

There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are located in Albania. This recognition is only given to special areas in the world that have significant natural or cultural value. The fist area is a city called Berat. It is known as the "city of 1000 windows" due to the architecture. Many consider this one of the oldest areas of Albania. Gjirokastër is the other location. This city also has very unique architecture and its own castle. Here you can also visit a few different museums that are dedicated to the Albanian culture.

Living With Royal Bengal Tiger in Bangladesh

Bangladesh, a South Asian country surrounded by India, Mayanmer and Bay of Bengal possesses the world's largest mangrove forest, Sundarban and plenty of Royal Bengal tigers in it. It is in Khulna, the second largest sea port of the country. Since it is next to India and lack of English practiced in that region of Bangladeshies, people think most Royal Bengal Tigers are from India and the name of Sundarban in Bangladesh remains unknown. Along with spotted deer Royal Bengal tiger is spotted there in Sundarban, Khulna. Tigers' footprint is seen even more on the mud. There are many incidents that tigers attack the villagers at night or during honey collecting. Honey collectors have different experience with the powerful tigers.

One or two of their family members or neighbors are attacked by the sharp paws or teeth of tigers. As a caution they wear mask at the back of their head, so Bengal tigers think that they are watching them from their eyes at the back or men have two faces that might scare them. Wearing masks at the back of their head is a common practice for the honey collector in Sundarban, Bangladesh. Honey in Sundarban is of high quality and of great demand and that motivates these poor honey collectors to brave their lives with these Bengal tigers. Often the incident of tiger attacks appears in the newspaper. There were couple documentaries on Sundarban's interesting facts.

The way the villagers catch fish is another amazing story. Instead of net or hook, some of them catch fish with otters. Those villagers tame the otters and make them go into the water bodies. They grab fish and bring it to the owner showing their loyalty by not eating the fish. As a reward at the end of the catch the fishermen give them few fish to eat. That is how their contribution is traded. The interesting and scary lifestyles of people living there make Sundarban a wonderful tourist spot in Bangladesh, visited by thousands of people each year.

Marsa Racetrack

If you’re a horse lover or simply like to play the odds, then you’d be pleased to know that Malta also boasts a healthy horse-racing culture.  Every Sunday equine enthusiasts gather at the Marsa Racing Course to cheer on their favourite horse or put their money where their mouths are and place the occasional wager on the results.

The racecourse was founded in the 19th Century by British Military and Naval officers along with some of the local gentry.  By 1929, the Marsa Racing Course was seeing regular races taking place thanks to the importation of expertly trained racehorses from North Africa.  However this hit a snag when most of these same horses had to be slaughtered during the Second World War.

Race meetings recommenced in December 1945 although when the British Armed Forces left the island, there was a sudden depletion of both horses as well as jockeys.  Rather than put a halt to their newfound hobby, the Marsa Racing Club substituted the traditional horseback races for the new sulky races which saw drivers racing ponies while sitting on a lightweight two-wheeled cart reminiscent of the Roman chariot races.

The racetrack was reconstructed in 1981 and a grandstand for 2000 spectators was included as well as bars and shops to accommodate them.  Apart from the local races, the Marsa Racing Course is also occasionally called upon to host international events such as the European Championship for Professional Drivers in 1998.

When visiting the Marsa Racing Course, you’re sure to succumb to the sheer enthusiasm that permeates the air.  As you loudly cheer on your favourite horse amidst a crowd of screaming onlookers, you’ll be sampling a pure taste of raw Mediterranean passion.

Bookmark Break Update

After a few days on the beach and a couple of long bus rides, my book list is finally getting longer! At my last update we were at 13 books.

Add to that:

With No One as a Witness - Elizabeth George **** (great Mystery read if you are looking for a new author. She often uses the same characters)

Whirl of the Wheel - Catherine Condie ***(free ebook from Amazon. Kind of a kid‘s book, but it was cute enough and it was definitely short and sweet)

Compromising Positions - Jenna Bayley-Burke ** (totally chick romance beach book)

Meridon - Phillippa Gregory *** (I had heard she did great Historical Fiction, but this one was a little strange, and not that historic in my opinion, but it was still a fun read)

New Moon - Stephany Meyer *** (I am getting tired of the main character. She seems like a melodramatic pain in the butt. I will probably read the rest of the series though)

So now we are up to 18! I am still way behind many of the others, but ahead of the average, so I am not doing too bad!

What I am currently reading:

The Girl Who Played With Fire
- Steig Larsson

For more book info and fun and to see the entire list, you can go to my Bookshelf page!

What book are you reading? Is it any good? If it is, let me know -- I will read just about anything! Also, if you want to join in on the Bookmark Challenge, it’s not too late. All you need is a list of whatever books you have read in 2011.
