Women in History: My Thoughts

A caring mother, a smart sister, a gorgeous wife, a loving daughter – Ask a man a hundred years ago what they thought a woman is and that’s likely the answer you’d get. What about history? Let’s put aside all these Lords and Misters for a minute and examine the real unsung heroes of history. In my humble opinion, women do not get the credit they deserve and (to put it quite eloquently) that is completely unacceptable, whether by today’s standards or then. Because of this rather Draconian practice of snubbing women from the pages of history, I thought that it would’ve been a good (ish) idea to launch a ‘Women’s History Month’ (yes, I know that’s in March) to coincide with InternationalBreast Cancer Awareness Month.

Why? Because, if a woman was capable ofsaving France from an English conquest, if a woman could lay the foundation of a golden age in her country (the likes of which have never been seen again), then surely, I know women are more than tough enough to stand up and beat cancer to a pulp.

So what have women done in history, then?

Where do I start? It would be near suicide if I had to list it all purely because it would be near-infinite.  History has shown us time and time again that women are just as good as men and sometimes are (unsurprisingly) better than us! We need only to look at the Golden Ages under the reign of Catherine the Great of Russia in the late 18th century and of Queen Elizabeth I of England. From Cleopatra, the iconic pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt to Margaret Thatcher (try not to cringe), first and only British Prime Minister; history once again proves that women can rule just as well as men do (isn’t that called marriage?)

Alright, what about brains?

You’re joking! Female inventors have contributed so much to modern day life –Think back to Marie Curie at the turn of the 20thcentury. The “Mother of Modern Physics", she was a pioneer in research about radioactivity (a word she coined) and was the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in research science in Europe as well as the first female professor at the Sorbonne. She is famous for discovering and isolating polonium and radium, and established the nature of radiation and beta rays (so say thank you, physics students!) .

Bear in mind that was just one woman, women have also invented the vacuum ice cream freezer, computer’s compilers (and the “Mark” Computer series) and COBOL. Well actually, only two women made the stuff I just listed. There are literally thousands upon thousands of inventors, and this could all fit in a good 27-part volume series.

To conclude, I’d like to once again state that the fact that women are snubbed from the pages of history books (and restricted to concubines) is simply crap. These are the unsung heroes of history, every great man in history, from Alexander the Great to Ivan the Terrible, would be (literally) nothing without women. This post is dedicated to the brave women of the world, the true heroes.

Stuck in a Rut? Beat Exercise Boredom - Get a Personal Trainer

Setting goals

A great personal fitness trainer will spend some time with you, right at the outset, setting appropriate goals for you. This is the key to beating exercise boredom: if you have something to aim for, this brings purpose and focus to your training program. Instead of just ploughing on endlessly on your (metaphorical or real) treadmill, you immediately have something to aim for - something which will stretch you, but also something which is within your reach (if you work for it). Without goals, an exercise programme is pretty much a waste of time

Fresh ideas

Exercise boredom can arise from sheer monotony: if you're always doing the same old routine, week in, week out, is it surprising you're feeling jaded? Good personal trainers will keep you on your toes by giving you plenty of fresh ideas to keep your workouts interesting and add variety. Having a fresh new programme will benefit you long after you've stopped paying the trainer.

Pushing your limits

Even if you have a great set of goals, and a fresh new exercise programme, motivation may still falter if you don't see results. Your personal trainer should monitor your progress and help you to see how far you've come. We are all driven by the need to compete, and this includes competing with your own previous performances. There's nothing more satisfying than beating a target you've set yourself. Your trainer will push you further than you can push yourself - with amazing results.

Social contact

One of the nicest things about working with a personal trainer is simply the social contact you get. It's vital of course that you choose someone you can build up a rapport with: s/he will see you at your best and your worst so you need to get on well. You'll find you look forward to meeting up each week - much more fun than exercising alone. Furthermore, because you are paying him/her, your trainer should be focussed 100% on YOU and your needs: this in itself will make you feel good about training.

Bootcamps or group training provide even more social contact - with the added incentive of peer pressure. They can be much more effective than simply attending an exercise class, because they are designed to bring in that element of competition. And the group size is usually much smaller, so that the trainer can give you more individual attention.

Convinced yet? Check out my blog post, '5 good reasons to get a personal trainer' to find out more ways in which getting a personal trainer can benefit you.

Exercise boredom can be a real motivation killer if you're a regular exerciser. If you're on the same old (metaphorical or real) treadmill week in, week out, you can find it harder and harder to motivate yourself to train until eventually you may find yourself thinking up more and more excuses not to train.
A good personal trainer will get you out of that exercise rut, by providing your training with structure and focus, providing fresh ideas and by helping you to push your limits and see results. It's an investment which can be scary, but worth it!

Exercise Should Be Personal and Dynamic - There Is Literally Something for Everyone

So many times people believe that in order to begin an effective training programme, they must do some kind of soul destroying activity that will result in misery. The thought of breaking out into anything more than a brisk walk is enough to fill even the most determined would be exerciser with dread. Is there a better way, or should you just forget the thought of exercising altogether?

As you'll already know, it's important to participate in some form of regular exercise, but many of us don't. Exercise is proven to reduce the risks of hypertension, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, depression, breast cancer, and is also a great stress buster. So why is it that a significant number of us still fail to integrate exercise into our lives, despite the stresses of modern living and constant reminders of the risks involved with living a sedentary lifestyle?

There is a huge misconception when it comes to exercise intensity, many people think that unless you're going all out then it's unlikely that you'll see any benefit. This isn't necessarily the truth, although we burn more calories and put our bodies systems under more 'good' stress when exercising at a higher intensity, there is still much to be gained by staying within your comfort zone if it means that you'll stick with it. If you can aim to push your comfort zone a little then fine, your body will adapt to anything that you do, so you can progress at your chosen discipline and eventually see greater benefits. However, it still remains true that the benefits of exercise are present at lower intensities than you'd expect; anything is better than nothing.

There is also a misconception as to what is valid exercise, when you consider that we do very little activity from day to day in general it wasn't always this way. Even 30 years ago, lifestyles were far more taxing. Exercise is often categorised into either aerobic, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and stress management, when considering that we took part in all of these things quite naturally right from our humble beginnings then it shouldn't really be too hard for you to integrate them with little drama. Walking, running, exercise classes, playing with the children, swimming... the list is endless, as long as you're getting your heart pumping all is good! Just be sure to vary your routine a little. I would say that what we possibly miss most is lifting as we have numerous aids, so buy some dumbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, or even a medicine ball and get creative, there are options. Also, bear in mind good posture 24/7 and if need to be seek advice from your GP.

A key thought would be enjoyment, as long as you're active and enjoying it you will stick with it. Let's take children for example, the amount of energy they have is astonishing and they are incredibly active when left to their own devices (away from the television!) but you have to admit that it's seldom that they do things they don't enjoy. There is so much variety where exercise is concerned, find something you love and replace passive entertainment (TV, consoles, films etc) with active entertainment such as zumba, boxercise, circuits, walking etc. If you're struggling for options, hire a certified personal trainer for a few sessions and make it their mission to find out what it is that you enjoy most, simple.

In summary being active isn't all that hard, you shouldn't focus too much on the benefits to begin with and just focus on doing something that you take part in for stimulation. Remember this: you must first regain it, then use it or lose it.

As a former Royal Marines Commando and REP's Level 3 Personal Trainer based in Cheltenham, UK, Matt Goodman cuts straight to the heart of weight loss, focusing on the array of issues surrounding successful lifestyle change.

The Importance of a Personal Fitness Plan

Even as early as ninth grade, students are taught to integrate a variety of health concepts, skills, and behaviors to plan for their personal health goals. The importance of having a personal fitness plan is so great that they are given a comprehensive health education where they learn basic health concepts and the various factors that have an impact on their health.

Now, if this information is deemed important enough to teach our kids in their teens, shouldn't we, as the responsible adults that we are supposed to be, consider it equally important? The sad truth is that many times, life gets in the way of us making intelligent health choices. Hectic work schedules, multiple after-school activities with the kids and trying to make it to the PTA meeting on time all conspire to divert our good intentions when it comes to our personal fitness.

Developing an effective and realistic fitness plan requires a process of delicately intertwining varied but equally important elements. Cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and flexibility and proper diet all combine to create a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. Don't let the last statement scare you away from fitness. Of all of the decisions that you make on any given day, the one that steers you in the direction of a personal fitness plan is, without a doubt, one of the most important decisions that you can make; if not the most important. There are many plans that can provide you with a road map to a healthy life. By far the best one that I have found is Visual Impact by Rusty Moore.

Referencing back to the extremely busy life that we all lead, a side benefit that many people overlook is the fact that being healthy and having a body that performs at its optimum level will help reduce stress. As for those folks who immediately think "I'm too busy to work out", you can just stop that right now, because the vast majority of people who begin a new routine for their personal fitness find that they actually have MORE time. I think some of the reason for this is that, in order to work out, they are getting out of bed earlier and feel as if they have more time because their bodies are functioning at a much higher level.

There are a few things that I would like to leave you with as I close this article: 1) As you are creating the plan that you will follow to get physically fit, it is extremely important to remember that, at times everybody needs to have a support system. Friends, family or coworkers can be a good place to find that support. 2) Stay away from the places that are particularly tempting. Nothing good can come from fighting yourself. 3) Finally, one of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to recruit someone to be your workout partner. Having someone that you are accountable to besides yourself will give you a better chance of success in the long run.

Until next time, here's to your health!
