Canada Summer 2013: Old Port and Old Montreal
August 11, 2013 -- After biking along Lachine Canal, I rode to the Old Port and Old Montreal where I docked the Bixi bike share and walked around the area full of tourists and interesting historic attractions.
The Old Port of Montreal is located along the St. Lawrence River and was used as early as 1611 by French fur traders as a trading post. Today, it includes the Montreal Science Centre with an IMAX theater, Montreal Clock Tower and other points of interest for the six million annual tourists drawn to the port.
After having lunch at the Old Port, I walked to Old Montreal, which is where Samuel de Champlain set up a fur-trading post at Place Royale in 1605 and where the original site of Montreal in 1642 is located at Pointe-à-Callière.
The is the most European area of Montreal, with outdoor cafes, horse-drawn carriages, street performers, artists and old monuments and memorials. You are transported back in time walking the streets of Old Montreal.
