New Book in the Works: Recollections by Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven

These are exciting times here at Eurohistory!

As we release this news, we are looking forward to our newest book, The Grand Ducal House of Hesse, which is printing this week. We expect that The Grand Ducal House of Hesse, our 32nd book, will be available to ship to preorders in mid-August, if not a little earlier!

Now being said...we want to share with you our latest news...

Last week, Eurohistory received permission to publish a unique personal memoir written by Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven.

Born Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine in 1863, Victoria was the eldest child of the future Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and his wife, the former Princess Alice of the United Kingdom and Ireland, Queen Victoria's extremely talented second daughter.

Princess Victoria of Hesse was very close to her English grandmother, both maintaining a voluminous multi-year correspondence. Excerpts of this correspondence were published in book form several years ago.

In 1884 at Darmstadt, the grand ducal capital, Victoria married her first cousin once-removed, Prince Louis of Battenberg. The couple had four children: Alice, Princess Andreas of Greece; Louise, Queen of Sweden); George, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven; and Louis, Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

Prince Louis of Battenberg.

Having lost her mother at an early age, Victoria of Hesse became the sail and keel of her extended family. She traveled across Europe with great frequency to visit her siblings and other relations. One month she would be at Hemmelmark visiting her sister Princess Irene of Prussia, then she would return to Darmstadt to stay with her brother Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. When in Russia, Victoria would visit her sisters: Elisabeth Feodorovna in St Petersburg, Moscow, or Illinskoe; and Alexandra, consort of Tsar Nicholas II.

Victoria became the keeper of family secrets, solver of family drama, and advice-giver to them all.

It is amazing for us to be able to bring to our readers Victoria's RECOLLECTIONS. This remarkable first-hand recount of the lives of most in her circle of family and the "Royal Mob," as Queen Victoria called the extended family, is a fascinating read. It will become a must-have for those of us interested in royalty as well as a useful research tool.

RECOLLECTIONS will include extended annotations, an in-depth introduction, and a new chapter bringing Victoria's memoirs to a close. Her memoirs begin in the 1860s and run up to 1914, when the outbreak of war caught her while visiting Russia. Adding great value to this important royal autobiography, there will be a plethora of photos depicting the vast cast of characters who play a role in the life story of Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven.

Stay tuned for more exciting news regarding this unique work!

VEHICLE CRUSHED AND OWNER SENTENCED TO 30 DAYS IN PRISON

From Cyprus Police 22 July 2020

Vehicle crushed and the owner sentenced to 30 days in prison.

The relevant decision of the Larnaca District Court, concerning the destruction of a vehicle which

had undergone significant alterations in violation of relevant legislation, was implemented today.

Specifically, on December 5, 2019, members of ADE Larnaca stopped for inspection a car driven by a

27-year-old man. During the inspection, it was found that the 27-year-old was driving with a driver's

licence and without a safety certificate.

Both the driver and his car were taken to Larnaca Traffic where a check found that the car had

undergone various mechanical modifications such as the change of engine without permission

from the Motor Vehicles Commissioner, while the chassis indicating the chassis number was cut and

welded again, resulting in no proof of vehicle identity and deemed unfit for use.

The next day, December 6, 2019, the Police went to court for a vehicle retention issue, which was

accepted.

The case was taken to the Court of Justice where its hearing was concluded on 11 June 2020.
The Larnaca District Court sentenced the 27-year-old to four months' deprivation of a driving

licence and a 30-day prison sentence after finding him guilty of the offences of driving a motor

vehicle with a denied driving licence, driving without a safety certificate as well as voluntary

mechanical modifications to the vehicle, and further ordering the destruction of the
vehicle.

This vehicle was today transferred to an approved vehicle destruction site where it was executed in

the relevant decree of the Court of Justice.

GERMANY WANTS TO INTRODUCE CAR TOLL ACROSS EU, DOCUMENT SHOWS

Reuters News Service 22 July 2020

By Markus Wacket

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer aims to clear the way for an almost blanket motorway toll for cars across Germany and Europe during the country's presidency of the European Union, a draft document seen by Reuters on Wednesday showed.

Within eight years, almost all vehicles on motorways, including lorries, vans and cars, would have to pay tolls, according to the draft for the EU toll directive.

"As regards member states that have already established a charging system, tolls or user charges shall be levied upon all vehicles except coaches and buses," stated the document which Scheuer wants German ministries to approve on Wednesday.

That would make it Germany's official proposal for its presidency of the bloc which started on July 1 and runs until the end of the year.

However, some government officials told Reuters that some German ministries wanted to put the project on ice even though a distance-based toll is widely seen as a measure to help protect the climate.

It is particularly sensitive for ministries headed by the Social Democrats (SPD), who share power with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and have long been critical of car tolls.

FACTBOX - WHAT IS BRITAIN'S CITIZENSHIP OFFER TO HONG KONG RESIDENTS?

Cyprus Mail 22 July 2020 - Reuters News Service

A file photo shows people queue as they wait to cast their votes for the Legislative Council election at a polling station in Hong Kong

Britain has offered a path to citizenship for around 3 million people in Hong Kong, its former colony, after declaring that China had broken the terms of a 1984 handover treaty by imposing a new security law.

Below are details of the offer, which applies to those with British National (Overseas) status and their dependants:

WHAT IS A BRITISH NATIONAL OVERSEAS?

British National (Overseas), or BN(O), is a special status created under British law in 1987 that specifically relates to Hong Kong.

It allows adults and children to register and hold a BN(O) passport if:

– they were a British dependent territories citizen by connection with Hong Kong.

– they would not have been a British dependent territories citizen but for a connection with Hong Kong.

A BN(O) passport holder is still subject to immigration controls and does not have the automatic right to live or work in Britain.

As of Feb. 24, 2020, there are 349,881 holders of BN(O) passports and the government estimates there are around 2.9 million BN(O)s currently in Hong Kong.

WHAT IS BRITAIN OFFERING BN(O)s?

Britain is granting BN(O)s five years “limited leave to remain” that allows them to live and work in Britain.

After five years, BN(O)s will be able to apply for “settled status”.

After 12 months with settled status, they can apply for citizenship.

The immediate family of those with BN(O) status will also be eligible.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA?

Interior minister Priti Patel set out eligibility details on July 22.

– There will be no skills tests or minimum income requirements, economic needs tests or caps on numbers.

– Applicants do not need to have a job before coming to the UK – they can look for work once there. Their immediate dependants may include non-BN(O) citizens.

– BN(O) citizens will need to support themselves independently while living in the UK.

– They must meet strict criminality checks and stay of good character.

– They will need to pay visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge.

– If they subsequently apply for citizenship after they become settled, they must meet the criteria and pay the applicable fees.

WHEN WILL THE CHANGES COME INTO FORCE?

– The government is planning to open the Hong Kong BN(O) Visa for applications from January 2021.

– BN(O) citizens do not need to hold a BN(O) passport in order to apply for the visa, so there is no need to apply for or renew a BN(O) passport specifically for this purpose.

– All BN(O) citizens will need a visa to be able to settle in the UK.
