THE BRIDGE OF MUSIC with Cyprus Symphony Orchestra - Tala Amphitheatre - 24 June

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is performing two live concerts of Haydn’s tenth opera ‘L’Isola Disabitata’ (the desert island), at Pallas Theatre in Nicosia on June 23 and Tala Amphitheatre in Paphos on June 24.

What: The Bridge of Music

When: Friday, 23 June & Saturday, 24 June

Where: Pallas Theatre, Rigainis and Arsinois, Paphos Gate, Old Nicosia, Nicosia and Tala Amphitheatre, Konstantinos Leventis Park, Tala, Paphos

L’Isola Disabitata first premiered in December 1779 and is remembered today for its dramatic ‘Sturm und Drang’ overture, typical of the proto-Romantic movement, which shaped the German-speaking world of literature and music between the late 1760s and the early 1780s.

The orchestra will also perform songs by Alkis Baltas and Ali Hoca. Inspired by well-known Cypriot traditional songs, Baltas orchestrated these beautiful, genuine melodies using the rich palette of the orchestral sound colours. Hoca was inspired by the melodies, rhythms and modes of Cyprus, such as the Zeybek, Syrto, Tsiftetelli and the Mandra traditional dance.

The concert will start at 8.30pm each night and tickets for the Nicosia event cost €12 / €7 / €5 / €3. The Paphos concert is free under the auspices of Pafos2017. For more information call 22463144.

WATER - TALA

Regrettably it would appear that due to low levels in the reservoirs, the water board are struggling to get sufficient supply through the pipe network.  This has meant that they are switching the supply on and off.   This then has a knock on effect as Tala is effectively at the end of the chain - which means that pressure drops for most users in Tala and there is a problem with tanks filling up [with those lower down the chain getting their supply first, and then there is little or nothing left for everyone else].  Not everyone will have noticed a difference, but those at the 'top of the hills' have not had any supply through their water pipes for several days now.

We are trying to speak to the Director of the Water Board to find an urgent solution to this problem.  Until then could everyone please:

1  Be careful with supplies
2  Stop or reduce non-essential activities
3  Operate washing machines and dish washers only when they have a full load.  If possible, set these to run late evening when demands on water are lower
4  Take showers rather than baths

Further information follows as soon as we can.

Happy Summer!

 Happy Summer friends!
The summer busyness is in full swing around here, lots of comings and goings and lots of projects getting accomplished. We are still hard at work on the trim, but very close to having it done, we are on to the painting!

In the mean time, how about a garden tour in honor of the first day of summer?

We always have fun trying new combinations of annuals in our large flower pots. This year's choices are petunias, marigolds, dusty miller, snapdragons, alyssum and celosia.

With all the warm weather in the last two weeks, they have really taken off! We are loving all the colors!

The garden seems to have gotten a bit of a slow start, but is finally coming along nicely. The usual carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, beans, lettuce and peas. Oh and dill that re-seeded from last year!

Our one raspberry plant has gone a bit wild, it is the taller plant in the front of the box. Mandy is trying to decided what we are going to do about it, in the meantime, it looks like we will get a nice crop of raspberries!

The strawberries are going strong! A bit on the smaller side because of the warm weather, but oh so good.

I have been working on my "cutting garden". Trying to decide what to plant and what would be just enough. I was so excited the peonies bloomed this year, but missed the chance to pick any or get pictures.

It is amazing how much all the bushes have grown! You can't quite see them, but there are two more hydrangeas behind the boxwood and they look like they will also bloom this year. I am so looking forward to it!

After last years renovations of the sidewalks and flower beds, I am finally happy with the way this side is shaping up. Because I took out the bit of a sidewalk that curved around the house, I was able to make the bed bigger. I think I might need another plant or two, but while I think on that the bleeding heart fills the space. The bleeding heart loves it here and I am not sure if I want to move/replace it. It does get a little wild, but because of the shade it stays green for most of the year.
Well, there you have it! That is what is growing at the little cottage.
How is your garden growing this year?

COLLECTION OF RECYCLING AT YOUR DOOR - Starts Monday 3 July

Collection of packaging recycling at your door in Tala will start on Monday 3 July.   Could you please leave the items for recycling alongside where you would normally leave your household refuse [ie alongside, not in, your bin house if you have one, or alongside the large refuse bin if you are in a complex] by 7.30am.   Thereafter collections will be weekly, every Monday.

A leaflet and a clear bag for the first collection will be delivered to your house/mail box at your house before 3rd July.  Please note that after the first collection, you are asked to ensure that bags [or for cardboard/paper tied into bundles, or all placed in a cardboard box]  as shown below are used.

Plastics, metals and tetra pak type containers should please be washed out.

1  PMD [plastics, metals and tetra pak type containers] should be left in the clear bag.

2  Cardboard and paper should be placed in a semi-transparent black/brown bag, or tied into bundles with string, or all placed in a cardboard box. [Please try to ensure that nothing is likely to fly away in the wind!]

If you use bins to collate your recycling materials, you can leave the bags in these receptacles outside your house.  The bags will be removed and the receptacles will be left for you - however, there have been instances of these disappearing due to theft, so it is recommended that you do not leave such receptacles on the street!

Replacement bags can be purchased at the supermarkets.  These state that they are for recycling materials and show PMD on the clear bags, and Paper on the semi-transparent brown/black bags.

Please bear in mind that you can still collect cans separately if you wish to help Cans for Kids - with collection points at the Kamares Club and UKCA Club.

Re glass, the recycling bins for glass will remain in situ and there will NOT be a collection at your door for bottles/glass.   As a reminder, there are bottle banks at the following sites:

1 Ayios Neofytous Avenue near to the Monastery
2 Mary Leptos Street/Koralion St junction
3 Kamares Club
4 Tala Primary School
5  Next to the Football pitch
6  Tala Monastery Cat Park car park
