Yet Another Stoney Batter Theory

Was this Stoney Batter?
OK, this was originally going to be a comment on the original post, but it seemed to be running long so it's now a short post of its own. The other day, commenter Tharanstudio asked if I had anything on the E. Gregg House, which stood near the base of Stoney Batter Road until just a few years ago (relatively speaking). At first, I was just going to say, "Yes, it was mentioned in the post a while back about the Walkers of the Mermaid Area", and just be done with it. But, in looking back over said post, something jumped out at me. This serves as a good example of the value of occasionally going back and looking over/up old information once in a while.

In the Walker post, I mentioned that there had been a Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) report done on the property at one point, but that only the photographs (and not the data pages) were posted online. Since I hadn't checked it in a while, I figured I'd look to see if the rest had been posted. Unfortunately they have not, but in looking at the entry I noticed something that I probably hadn't before, or at least it didn't seem important before. It may not end up meaning anything, but I thought it warranted some looking into. What I noticed was that while the HABS report officially lists the property as the J. Walker Farm, under "Other Title" it lists Stoney Batter House. (insert dramatic "dun dun DUN music here)

With my brain currently firmly stuck in Stoney Batter, that jumped out at me. [apropos of nothing, "Brain Stuck in Stoney Batter" would be a great album title] This secondary name could mean one of two things. On the one hand, it may be that whoever filed the report just sort of made up the name Stoney Batter House because it was at the base of Stoney Batter Road, or the house could have acquired the name from the road over the years. If this is the case, then it doesn't help us in our etymological quest into the origins of the name.

But, and this is a big but, if that name was recorded because the researchers found it used as the name of the house (or farm) at any point, it would be a huge clue for us. If you'll recall, one of the possibilities I put forth for the road name was that it could have come from the name of a farm somewhere along it. And if Mermaid-Stoney Batter is an older form of the name, then it would make perfect sense for Stoney Batter to be at the opposite end of the road from the Mermaid (Tavern). That happens to be pretty much where this house stood.

The final intriguing piece comes when you look at the history of the property. It was in the Gregg family for much of the later 19th Century, after having been owned by the Walkers for about 50 years. Before the Walkers, however, the property was owned by the Bines family. To be honest, I can't really pick apart their full involvement right now, except to say that according to the NRHP form, Dr. Robert Bines acquired the property in 1761. He's always mentioned as having been a surgeon in the Continental Army, although I'm not sure how to reconcile that with the fact that he died in 1774. Later tax documents apparently list a Dr. Robert Bines, so the farm may have passed to his son James Robert Bines, although that is pure speculation on my part at this time.

All that being said, the really important fact to us right now is that Robert Bines was from......Ireland. I can't find any indication of where in Ireland he came from, but if by chance he hailed from somewhere near Dublin, he would have known Stoneybatter. Could the name in our area have originated with this Irish doctor? Perhaps. With some luck, maybe someday we'll know.

One more treat for you, while we're here. While I was digging around trying desperately to find any more information about the good doctor, I stumbled across the portrait below. It's owned by the Delaware Historical Society, as you can see. They label it as being either Dr. Robert Bines or Maxwell Bines. Maxwell was his son. I can't help but think the jacket looks like a uniform jacket. Was this the face that brought Stoney Batter to Mill Creek Hundred, confusing the hell out of nice people for centuries??

A Guide to Better Oblique Training: The Transverse Plane

Humans have the capacity to move freely and seamlessly through three different planes of motion: the sagittal plane, the frontal plane, and the transverse plane. Many strength programs utilize several different exercises in the first two (sagittal and frontal) planes, but neglect the transverse plane altogether. In order to perform well across a broad range of tasks, we must prepare our bodies for movements in all three planes. The transverse plane employs the smaller, stabilizer muscles, rather than the big prime movers. It is is equally important (if not more important) to focus on the development of these stabilizer muscles as that of the bigger muscle groups.

Chill with the side raises and try some new exercises.
CrossFitters, bodybuilders, Strongmen weightlifters and powerlifters become tremendously strong in the sagittal and frontal planes as the result of their training, but movements like burpees or barbell curls will do virtually nothing to strengthen rotational movements. The obliques, and their synergists, work to laterally flex the spine. The prime action of the internal and external obliques, however, is spinal rotation. A thrower of any sort will have extremely powerful obliques (on one side, at least). An athlete who predominantly participates in one of the aforementioned sports should incorporate more exercises in the transverse plane into his routine.

Enter the transverse plane. Rotational movements are very common in everyday life and in sport. Anytime we stop short and turn around, or any time we have to stabilize ourselves on one side (e.g. single leg Romanian deadlift) we are moving in the transverse plane. For athletes who participate in sports like tennis, soccer, baseball or tennis, adequate training in the transverse plane is crucial in order to perform well and prevent injury.

A study in 2008 published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Sports Physical Therapy found that individuals who had decreased function in the muscles responsible for movement in the transverse plane experienced a greater strain on their achilles tendons while running.

Training in the transverse plane may also be beneficial in preventing ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries. According to orthopedist Dr. Boden, "young women are two to eight times more likely than their male counterparts to injure [the ACL]." A study in 2003 attempted to find out why this is the case. Researchers carefully analyzed the gaits and knee angles 20 female recreational runners. They found that the female group's hip and knee mechanics in the transverse plane were vastly different from those of the male group. The necessary protocol, researchers concluded, was a training program to develop strength of the lower extremities, with particular focus on strengthening external rotation.

While squats, deadlifts, and shoulder presses are all fabulous exercises for increasing strength, those will only get you so far. If you're serious about improving your athletic performance and you want to avoid injury (which I would imagine you do), then add some exercises in the transverse plane into your routine. So what type of exercise can you do in the transverse plane? Any single limb exercise will work wonders: single arm shoulder presses, single leg Romanian deadlifts, single leg squats, single arm push-ups, and so on. In all of these exercises, your stabilizer muscles are working hard to prevent you from rotating or falling over. Jumps in which the athlete much change direction in the air are also beneficial, as this directly mirrors the demands of many sports. Last, but not least, are the "chopping" movements. Get creative here! You can use cables to resemble chopping wood, or you can actually chop some wood! Use a sledgehammer and hit a tire or stand sideways and throw a medicine ball at a wall. All of these exercises will make your stabilizer muscles (your obliques, your gluteus medius, your piriformis, and so on) fire like crazy.

Now, you might be wondering what type of movements you can do in this plane. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Single leg Romanian deadlifts (preferably barefoot)
  2. Turkish get-ups
  3. Cable chop (upper to lower)
  4. Cable chop (lower to upper)
  5. Sledge hammer chops
  6. Lateral medicine ball throws
  7. Single arm overhead squats
  8. Punches or kicks on a punching bag
  9. Zig zag sprints
  10. Single leg 180 degree jumps

A good training program is one that is all inclusive, and machines can only get you so far. If you utilize exercises in the transverse plane at least 1-2 times you week will you take your training to the next level and simultaneously prevent injury. Remember: just because you can't see a muscle in the mirror doesn't mean you don't need to activate it and strengthen it!

Feel Good About Yourself

Why do You go to the Gym?

I want to lose weight. I want to look like I did when I was 20. I want to look like them. I want to… It is amazing the number of reasons people decide to join a gym and begin working out. I think it is safe to say while we all want to run faster, jump higher, and be more active, we all would probably say we want to look better as well. Unfortunately, the focus on looking better often outweighs the most important reason to go to the gym, to feel better about you.

Positive Motivation

It is not wrong to want to lose a few pounds, or have the physique you once had in high school, but looking only on the outward benefits can distract you from focusing on becoming healthier, more active and being able to fully enjoy the things around you. Studies show exercise does more than just build muscles, but also relieves stress, decreases depression and leads to a better outlook on life.

Your Goals are Our Goals

Our personal trainers have helped hundreds of people reach and exceed their fitness goals, but most importantly we seen the transformation in people that comes from achieving a something they once thought impossible. While we love to see hard work turn into sculptured abs, amazing arms, and healthy physiques, we love even more seeing the change that happens on the inside when a person works hard and then looks in the mirror and feels good about themselves once again.

Make a Real Difference in Your Life

If you are considering joining Jean-Robert’s Gym give us a call at 970-920-9595. Our personal trainers specialize in helping people create a fitness plan and the path to success. Let’s talk about your goals, your dreams and how we can help you feel great about yourself.
