FIFTEEN NEW CASES TODAY

Another 15 positives in the crown have been tested in the last 24 hours. The Ministry of Health informs that, according to an update received today by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit from contracting laboratories, a total of 2,891 laboratory diagnoses identified 15 new cases of COVID-19 disease.

  • Of 75 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases, 9 cases were identified.
  • Of 482 samples taken through a private initiative, 6 cases were identified.

The 15 new cases resulted as follows:

  • 9 by tracing:
  1. The 6 people are contacts from the professional environment of the cases announced on 14/9 (with symptoms from microbiological laboratories) and 16/9 (tracing). One person has symptoms. Today's new incidents have made the examination private. The cluster with the current 6 has 9 people, 8 of whom are contacts from the same professional area and one is from the family environment of the case announced on 16/9.
  2. The 7th person is from the family environment of the Brit who had arrived in Paphos from London on 16/9 and was announced on 17/9. Today's case, also British, had travelled with them on the same flight and has no symptoms.
  3. The other 2 people are contacts from the family environment of the case announced by a private initiative on 17/9. Total in the chain we have 3 people.
  • 6 by private initiative:
  1. The 1st person concerns a Russian permanent resident of Limassol who returned from London on 8/9 and on 13/9 developed symptoms (anosmia, dizziness, weakness). After returning to Cyprus she was informed that a friend in London had tested positive for the virus on 13/9.
  2. The 2nd person did the examination due to symptoms he had since 10/9 (fever, sore throat, cough).
  3. Two people did the test from a private initiative, with no symptoms. They are not related to each other and are being investigated if they have had contact with other cases.
  4. The other 2 people came to Cyprus from England on 7/9. Between 10 and 12 September they began to show symptoms (runny nose, cough).

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • From samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 141 laboratory diagnoses were carried out,
  • From samples taken in the context of passenger and repatriated checks, 1,397 laboratory tests were completed,
  • From the laboratory testing programme of 5,000 people aged 18-40 years in places with a high confusion of individuals, 139 laboratory tests were completed,
  • From samples taken as part of the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics, 234 laboratory diagnoses were carried out,
  • From samples taken as part of the student, teacher and school staff control programme, 423 laboratory diagnoses were completed.

Therefore, and on the basis of the data so far, the total number of cases amounts to 1,580.

In addition, six people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2virus at Famagusta General Hospital, one of whom is in the Increased Care Unit. A COVID-19 patient remains off the ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital.
