In the shielding of the coastal front of Kissonerga proceeds the Department of Public Works after repeated requests of the community council of Kissonerga, in order to deal with the intense weather phenomena.
In a statement to the CYPE, the president of K.S. Kissonerga Giorgos Stylianou said that after the problems caused by the intense sea disturbances during the winter season on the coastal pedestrian street that connects Kissonerga with Peyia, public works are proceeding to shield the coastal front in order to prevent damage, but also to facilitate traffic.
We think, he said, "it's a project that had to be done a long time ago" since, as he explained, because of the sea disturbance, "there were a lot of problems with cutting off the road and channeling traffic onto a dirt road."
For example, the communitarch of Kissonerga also referred to a sea disturbance in the past, where the waves moved even the temporary protection that had been done by rocks and caused damage to the road. For a few months, he added, the road linking Paphos with Coral Bay and Peyia had been badly damaged, and the vehicles were using a bypass dirt road with the resulting problems.
We think, he said, it's a project that needed to be done.
With the relevant work on the specific road network belonging to the Public Works, Mr. Stylianou said, the coastal front will be shielded and the coastline strengthened in order to prepare for the upcoming period. Due to the bad weather during the winter season, he added, this road network was cut off two to three times.
The requests of K.S. Kissonerrgas said Mr. Stylianou includes the change of the railing which has been oxidized and is very dangerous. The project is expected to be completed before the start of the winter season.
He then referred to the very serious problem of erosion presented by the beach of Potimi. The beach, located on the northwest front of Paphos, needs improvement, the president of the Community Council of Kissonerga Giorgos Stylianou told the Cyprus News Agency, but the request of the community authority is pending the development for the construction of the Marina.
According to the findings of the study requested by the Department of Public Works, the erosion problem is very serious, and priority should be given to protecting the coastline of Potimi beach. Mr. Stylianou said that with the protection recommended by the study, i.e. the installation of 10 break breakers and the improvement of the beach with artificial enrichment and sand, as well as the natural accumulation of sand due to the break breakers, the beach of Potimi will become the best beach in Paphos, serving both locals and tourists, and will be a reference point for the whole province.
