SECURITY TIPS OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

If you are about to jet off on holiday, the Police have a few recommendations for you.  These tips are not just intended for those going away, but could also be useful to those who are remaining at home and perhaps entertaining visitors over the summer months:

1  Social Media - do not share details of your holiday itinerary, holiday photos or make any comments regarding your holiday whilst you are away - wait until you return home.  Similarly do not broadcast on social media that you are 'off on holiday on  xxx to yyy'.

2  Telephone ansamachine and email acknowledgement - do not create a special message saying 'we are on holiday, will get back to you on our return' or similar, or an automated email acknowledgement saying 'on holiday, will get back to you'.    Be careful who you share information about any absence with - the least number of people possible.

3  Calendars - many people have a calendar pinned onto the fridge or another receptacle.  This is not a problem as long as your fridge, or wherever the calendar is hung, is not visible from a window or door.   If the calendar is visible it is easy for a potential thief to take a photo of your calendar through the window or door, blow it up and then read whatever is shown, whether it be appointments, holidays, etc.

4  Check the battery in your intruder alarm and the SIM card relevant to the alarm - as previously advised it is recommended you have a monthly check of these items to ensure they are functioning as they should be.

5  Before you go - take a few minutes to go around your property checking that all windows, shutters and doors are locked, all sheds and outhouses are locked up, and that no items like ladders, or tools are left out.   Lock any spare keys away and ensure that any valuables/cash are either removed from the property or locked in a secure safe.   Ensure that any electric timers are connected to lights so that they function in your absence.   Ask a trusted neighbour to close up your bin house door after collections, and remove any leaflets/post from your postbox on a daily basis.

If you have visitors, ensure they are not leaving windows open or unlocked and that any cash and valuables they bring with them are safely locked away whenever the property is left.

Do not broadcast that you will be away.   If at all possible, if you need a taxi to take you to the airport, use a firm you know, or arrange to be picked up further along the road, and ensure you are there waiting when the taxi appears.   Anyone passing can see the taxi and if they see luggage that will alert them to the fact that you are going away.
