(Expanded Version) Mid-Week Historical Newsbreak -- Tragedy at the Stanton Crossing

After a short absence, the Mid-Week Historical Newsbreak is back, with a story about a holiday season tragedy in Stanton. This one is interesting because it started out as just a short posting, but the more I found out the more I'm thinking that it might have had repercussions that are still evident today. I found several similar but slightly different newspaper accounts of the incident, each one providing a bit more of the story. The one seen above gives the short version of it, being that three people (well, two and a third assumed) were killed when they were struck by a train in Stanton. Sadly, it's a story that you can still see in the paper once or twice a year nowadays it seems, but this one may have a little more to it, I have a hunch.

For a longer version of the story, the December 24, 1897 edition of the (Washington, DC) Evening Star (in the upper left) gives a lot more (and a lot more graphic and gory) details. Very early on the morning of Christmas Eve 1897, T(homas) Wesley McBride, his wife Jennie, and their six year old daughter Carrie were on their way to the Wilmington market. They weren't regular attendants to the market, but this day they had some poultry and eggs they wanted to sell, maybe for some money for a Christmas feast. I'm not absolutely sure where they lived, but it may have been on the family farm formerly belonging to Wesley's father, William McBride. Ironically for a story about physical injury, the McBride farm seems to have been located at the present site of Christiana Hospital. If they did live there or close to there, it would make sense that they would be coming up the road toward Stanton, on their way (via today's Route 4) to the city.

It was a cold, blustery morning as the McBrides reached the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad tracks (now the Amtrak line) south of Stanton. It must have been a little past 2:30 in the morning when they arrived at the crossing, unfortunately at the same moment as the Washington and New York Express (due into Wilmington at 2:55 AM). Due to the conditions, the family had their wagon closed up as much as possible and apparently didn't hear or see the oncoming train. You can read the Evening Star report for more details of their injuries, but suffice it to say that in train vs. wagon, train wins.

However tragic it is, the story (at least in my mind) probably would have ended there except for the last (so far) newspaper report I found about the accident. It can be seen below, and comes from the January 2, 1898 edition of the Wilmington Sunday Star. When I first read the original story I had, it didn't specify exactly where the collision occurred, only that it was at the crossing at Stanton. I assumed they meant the B&O crossing of Limestone Road, where the bridge now goes over the tracks between the middle school and Kirkwood Highway. Then I saw it was actually the PW&B tracks, but even then it didn't quite register. Finally I read the story below and saw what was being implied -- a lawsuit.

It was really only then that it occurred to me. Today, and for quite a long time before, you'd have to work pretty hard to have your wagon (or car for that matter) hit by a train at this particular crossing.

The Stanton Crossing of the (then) PW&B tracks
Except for the station that's no longer there, this is still (more or less) what the Stanton crossing of the PW&B tracks looks like. It's the infamous Stanton Underpass. The photo above was taken sometime soon after the turn of the century, probably before 1910. I wonder (and maybe someone out there knows more and can confirm or deny this) if due to a real or threatened lawsuit by the McBride's family, the railroad decided to put in the underpass and take away this potentially dangerous at-grade crossing. Perhaps the reason the picture was taken was to show off the new underpass. Maybe all the cars that stalled in the water under that bridge over the years did so because a family lost their lives on a cold and windy Christmas Eve morning.

Nothing says 'Christmas' like faux fur and red streaks!

I love the holidays. They are hard, but I love them. My family has changed so much over the past 5 years, but change is good. Christmas 2011 is when I found out my dad's cancer was not curable. And last week I was told by my step-mom that there is another tumor on my dad's brain. It was unbelievable shock to hear that when she called me because I thought she was calling to finalize Christmas plans. However, the surgery is a good thing because that means we finally know what is causing my father to have so many seizures. The tumor will be gone and my dad will go back to normal.... well as normal as he can be. Thank God for wonderful advances in cancer medication and for the amazing team of doctor's at Duke Medical that take such wonderful care of him.

I went to the doctor on Monday for my B12 injection and I lost 2.5 pounds last week! I am down 16.1 pounds total in the past 28 days!

My Christmas break started Monday at 4:30 PM. I hit the gym for cardio and a weight circuit. As I was leaving, I could not help but snap a picture of the beautiful sunset we had. It rained and rained all day, so the beautiful sunset was welcome!

I then came home to two wonderful packages. I buy ALL of my tops and dresses from Venus and I ordered this amazing new faux fur sweatshirt, I thought it looked perfect for the holidays. I love it!

Christmas Eve morning I woke up early and hit the gym for 45 minutes of cardio. I had to do preventative damage control because my step mom was making my favorite Christmas snack; sausage balls. After I came back to get ready and drive up north to my hometown.

Oh and I got my red steaks touched up, they are so fabulous!

When I arrived in my hometown, my first stop was to see my best friend Anna and her adorable daughter, Alaina. She is unbelievably adorable and never cries.

After I left Anna's, it was finally time to go stay with my dad and step-mom, and victory was mine. I finally indulged in my sausage balls!

My sister and her boyfriend were also there with us and we stayed up so late talking and laughing. I had such a great time. I only got 5 hours of sleep!

I loved their beautiful tree!

Christmas morning I was up at 7 AM. It was time to leave my dads and go to my mom's so we could go to my Papa's for our annual Christmas breakfast. I am 24 years old and I have never missed a Christmas breakfast at my Papa's!

My step dad and brothers at Papa's breakfast!
My brother and my nephew at Papa's
Papa handing out gifts!
My step-grandmother Dixie makes this sausage, cheese, and egg casserole each year and I swear it's laced with crack, it is so delicious. I ate way too much of it.

After breakfast at Papa's, I went to my mom's for the day. Since I only had 5 hours of sleep at my dads and I had a carb overload from breakfast, I napped for a long time at her house. When I woke up, my brother, sister-in-law and nephew came over for Christmas lunch and exchanged gifts.

My mom made her famous mexican dip for lunch, it. is. amazing.

Around 3PM it was time for me to take off for Charlotte. I missed my cat and I wanted to get the drive over with so I would not have to make it today.

I got back to Charlotte around 6 PM and was lazy for the rest of the night watching my new favorite show, "Total Diva's". I can definitely tell I ate way too much because I went to bed at 9:30 PM and did not get up today until 9:30 AM. I never sleep 12 hours, but after a lot of food and driving, I could not get enough of it.

I was so happy to be off today. I took full advantage of it by getting ahead on cleaning and putting up my Christmas goodies. I also managed to get in a killer leg work out. It felt great to be back in my health grind - clean eating and hard work out's.

Marty and I were happy to relax once I finished all of that.

I am back at work tomorrow, but at least it is only one day! I have a jam packed weekend ahead and New Year's. My sister is staying with me this weekend and my mom will be staying with me next week! It looks like this new year will be coming in great!

DECEMBER 25 = The Christmas Truce of 1914

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF MY LOYAL READERS and ANY NEW READERS!! Sincerely,  Brian T. Bolten.

"25th Dec. At 8.30 a.m. I was looking out, and saw four Germans leave their trenches and come towards us; I told two of my men to go and meet them, unarmed (as the Germans were unarmed), and to see that they did not pass the half-way line. We were 350-400 yards apart at this point..... They were three private soldiers and a stretcher-bearer, and their spokesman started off by saying that he thought it only right to come over and wish us a happy Christmas, and trusted us implicitly to keep the truce.  He came from Suffolk, where he had left his best girl and a 3.5 h.p. motor-bike! He told me that he could not get a letter to the girl, and wanted to send one through me. I made him write out a post card in front of me, in English, and I sent it off that night. I told him that she probably would not be a bit keen to see him again. We then entered on a long discussion on every sort of thing. I was dressed in an old stocking-cap and a man's overcoat, and they took me for a corporal, a thing which I did not discourage, as I had an eye to going as near their lines as possible. I asked them what orders they had from their officers as to coming over to us, and they said none; they had just come over out of goodwill."

The Frontline Troops Call a Halt to the Fighting

This was the highly improbable scene that morning of Dec. 25 in 1914 as described by Captain Sir Edward Hulse of the 2'nd Scots Guards of the British Army in France. The actual events, while not so strange when looked at in context of the war up to that point, are all the more remarkable for being true. It was still early in the war, and the hate generated by years of relentless combat and propaganda had not set in yet. Troops still had recent memories of home; civilian life was not so far off as it would soon become. And the surroundings of the battlefield were not nearly so stark and outer worldly as they would become. Villages still were in evidence, and no-mans land was not yet the shell-hole hell-hole that it would become in only a short time. It still bore traces of life. And for the troops that took the biggest part in the events of Dec. 24 -25, 1914, the British and the Germans, it was comparatively easy. The war had raged in France and Belgium thus far. So their men could still think of home as a place untouched by war. Nevertheless, combat companies which had only recently been locked in mortal combat with each other found themselves exchanging Christmas greetings that year.

The Spirit of Peace Begins to Spread...

The event started in the Ypres (pronounced "eepres", but derisively pronounced "wipers" by the Brits) region of Belgium. German troops there began decorating small Christmas trees on Dec. 24. They continued by singing "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night"), and the Brits in opposing trenches responded by singing English Christmas carols. It was reported in one of the Brit newspapers - the Daily Telegraph that the Germans somehow had shipped a chocolate cake to the Brit trenches along with a note requesting a ceasefire at 7:30 that evening in order to celebrate the season as well as their captain's birthday. The Brits agreed, and sent some tobacco as a return gift. Both sides had recently received care packages from home, so they had an extra amount of food with them. So when 7:30 came the two sides each popped their heads above the edge of their trenches, and slowly began to emerge. Eventually, the men came out and began to exchange other gifts of tobacco, and cakes that they had received from home. The truce spread to other areas of the battle front. In some areas, the truce was called as a way for men from both sides to collect their dead from no-mans land, and give them a proper burial. Inevitably, the men in the burial teams began to interact.

The Officers Really Didn't Like the Idea....

The commanders of the troops took a decidedly dim view of this sort of fraternization. Comfortably ensconced in fine homes well behind the frontlines, they sent orders that this was all to stop. But in actual practice they and their counterparts on the other sides were surprisingly relaxed, viewing this as an interval during which they could shore up their own defences. Captain Hulse, quoted above had left orders that this was to stop, and left to report the situation to headquarters. He had no sooner returned than he found about twenty or thirty men from both sides gathered in no-mans land talking quite amiably:

"Scots and Huns were fraternizing in the most genuine possible manner. Every sort of souvenir was exchanged addresses given and received, photos of families shown, etc. One of our fellows offered a German a cigarette; the German said, 'Virginian?' Our fellow said, 'Aye, straight-cut', the German said 'No thanks, I only smoke Turkish!'... It gave us all a good laugh." There were even impromptu soccer games played in some places. This spontaneous truce could not of course last. But it did go on for all of Christmas day in those places where it did occur. In some sectors it actually lasted for some days after New Years. Captain Hulse recorded the end of non-hostilities:

"During the afternoon the same extraordinary scene was enacted between the lines, and one of the enemy told me that he was longing to get back to London: I assured him that "So was I." He said that he was sick of the war, and I told him that when the truce was ended, any of his friends would be welcome in our trenches, and would be well-received, fed, and given a free passage to the Isle of Man! Another coursing meeting took place, with no result, and at 4.30 p.m. we agreed to keep in our respective trenches, and told them that the truce was ended."
