KANYE WEST HAS DROPPED OUT OF 2020 PRESIDENTIAL RACE, REPORTS SUGGEST

The Independent 15 July 2020 - by Isobel Lewis

Officials in Wyoming have received a building permit application from Kanye West for a proposed amphitheater on property owned by the rapper. West recently announced that he plans to move the headquarters of his shoe and clothing company, Adidas Yeezy, to Cody. He also wants to build a 70,000-square-foot amphitheater on his 4,000-acre ranch. The Cody Enterprise reports the Park County Planning and Zoning Commission plans to discuss the proposal. Kanye West has reportedly dropped out of the 2020 presidential race less than two weeks after announcing his bid for the White House.

On Tuesday (14 July), Steve Kramer, a member of West’s campaign team, told Intelligencer that after amassing a 180-strong campaign team in Florida, the rapper would allegedly no longer be contesting the election.

“He’s out,” Kramer said, telling the publication that he was in the process of getting “all our stuff cancelled”.

He later added: “I have nothing good or bad to say about Kanye... Any candidate running for president for the first time goes through these hiccups.”

Kramer later told Intelligencer that staff were told the drive to get on the ballot was over on the same day that West shared a picture of himself registering to vote in Wyoming.

The Independent has approached West’s representatives for comment.

The reports come just days after a US presidential poll suggested that the “Stronger” rapper would gain less than two per cent of votes were he to run against President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

West announced his candidacy on 4 July, tweeting: “We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States.”

POETIC JUSTICE? TOPPLED SLAVER'S STATUE REPLACED BY ONE OF BLACK PROTESTER IN UK

in-cyprus 15 July 2020 -ByBouli Hadjioannou

A sculpture of a Black protester with her fist raised in the air has been erected in a stealthy night-time operation in place of a 17th Century English slave trader whose statue was toppled by anti-racism demonstrators in the port city of Bristol.

Edward Colston, who made a fortune from trading in West African slaves, was pulled down and thrown in the harbour of the city in southwest England last month by protesters demonstrating in the wake of the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.

The sculpture of Jen Reid, who was photographed standing on the plinth of Colston’s statue just after it was pulled down, was put up in the early hours of Wednesday by a team directed by artist Marc Quinn, the Guardian newspaper reported.

“Resident Jen Reid and I have unveiled a new temporary, public installation, ‘A Surge of Power (Jen Reid) 2020’, on top of Edward Colston’s empty plinth in Bristol, England,” Quinn said on Instagram beside a photograph of the new work.

Quinn is best known for his statue of pregnant disabled woman Alison Lapper in London’s Trafalgar Square.

“I think it’s something the people of Bristol really appreciate seeing,” Reid told the BBC.

The mayor of Bristol said the future of what should replace Colston should be decided by the people of Bristol, though he said the sculpture of Reid was installed by a London-based artist and no permission was given for it.

But some Bristol residents praised the move.

“There is an element of poetic justice about it,” said David Hayes, a 42-year-old resident of the city.

“Replacing it with a protester who stood on the plinth at the time – it’s a very powerful image and it’s been brilliantly done, I think. So, yeah, hopefully it might stay.”

Last month, Bristol said Colston’s statue, now retrieved from the water, would be exhibited in a museum and displayed alongside Black Lives Matter placards from the recent protest so the 300-year story of slavery and the fight for racial equality could be better understood.

QUEER WAVE - CYPRUS' FIRST LGBTQ+ FILM FESTIVAL COMING IN AUGUST

in-cyprus 15 July 2020 -ByJosephine Koumettou

The first edition of Cyprus’ first LGBTQ+ film festival will take place online from August 1-8 and access to online screenings is free of charge.

Organisers said that the festival’s aim is to make more queer cinema accessible to Cypriot audiences.

“We are addressing the serious gap in the market for LGBTQ+ films, and bringing communities closer together – one film at a time,” it was noted.

For eight days, spectators will have access to a rich programme of international, award winning short and feature films spanning fiction, documentaries and animation.

“Queer Wave is an answer to the problematic and long standing absence of LGBTQ+ films on the Cyprus market and gives emphasis to films which have not been screened in Cyprus before. The aim of the festival is to establish a new platform that will become an annual event,” organisers said.

Queer Wave has said that the festival’s programme will be published soon at www.queerwave.com

SIMPLE PROTECTION MEASURES AGAINST CAR THEFT AND THEFT OF PROPERTY FROM CARS

From Cyprus Police

In addition to the efforts made by the Police, in order to protect the property of citizens more effectively, a series of simple preventive measures are listed below to prevent incidents of vehicle theft and theft of property in vehicles, incidents in which they usually also cause damage to the windows or doors of vehicles in an attempt to breach them in order to steal property left inside vehicles.

1. We never leave money, bags, wallets, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables or important documents exposed and prominently in our vehicle, which can attract the attention of thieves and encourage theft or attempt at theft.

2. We park our vehicle in proper parking spaces, since it is safer. During the night, it is preferable to park our vehicle in places where there is enough road lighting, avoiding dark or secluded spots

3. We make sure that we have removed the keys of the vehicle, lock the doors and fully raise its windows. Even in the event of our removal from our vehicle, we take all those measures that would prevent the theft or theft of property from our vehicle.

We should also check our surroundings if we are carrying money, and should ensure that we never carry large amounts of money without having at least one person with us. Further, if money is carried, say to a bank, on a regular basis, the time and route should be varied.

4. If an anti-theft system is installed in our vehicle, we make sure that it is activated, while regularly checking that it is operating normally

More generally, the public is encouraged to be vigilant and to cooperate closely with the Police and in case they become aware of persons or vehicles roaming suspiciously, to immediately inform the local Police Station or to contact the Citizen's Contact Line on the telephone number 1460.

Finally, always prioritizing our physical integrity, safety and health, we avoid any confrontation with any suspicious person who may also react aggressively against us. The discreet observation of the suspects and the immediate information of the Police is the safest handling of such incidents by the citizens.

The magic in Acupuncture

Acupuncture[a] is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in which thin needles are inserted into the body. Acupuncture is a pseudoscience because the theories and practices of TCM are not based on scientific knowledge, and it has been characterized as quackery. There is a range of acupuncture variants which originated in different philosophies, and techniques vary depending on the country in which it is performed.[9] It is most often used to attempt pain relief, though acupuncturists say that it can also be used for a wide range of other conditions. Acupuncture is generally used only in combination with other forms of treatment.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the psychological process of purposely bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgment, which one develops through the practice of meditation and through other training. Mindfulness derives from sati, a significant element of Buddhist traditions, and based on Zen, Vipassanā, and Tibetan meditation techniques. Though definitions and techniques of mindfulness are wide-ranging, Buddhist traditions explain what constitutes mindfulness such as how past, present and future moments arise and cease as momentary sense impressions and mental phenomena.

FORMER EUROVISION BAND MINUS ONE NOW STRUGGLES TO KEEP BUSINESS ALIVE

Cyprus Mail 15 July 2020 -by Gina Agapiou

The rock music business is a tough one, but Cyprus favourite Minus One seemed to have it pegged, particularly after appearing on Eurovision.

Today, the band is struggling to survive, as the pandemic has devastated it financially and emotionally, while the state’s lack of support for the arts only makes things worse for the five musicians. The band is registered as a company in Cyprus.

But do they “Got It Covered” with their upcoming album? Financially speaking -probably not.

Same time last year, Minus One were opening for Dream Theatre in Athens. Today, the five musicians are struggling to make ends meet supported by the insufficient unemployment benefit after lockdown measures.

“The virus killed us. It zeroed our business” said drummer Chris J. “It’s like we do not exist anymore.”

The 11-year-old band used to be one of the most active bands of the island, performing live every week in public or private events. After Covid-19 restrictive measures, their contract with hotels and venue deals were put on ice.

“We used to play maybe two or three times per week, but now everything is shut down” singer Andreas Kapatais said.

Being off stage has led the band to depression and frustration as performing live was literally keeping the musicians alive.

Their new bass player, Orestis Savva, who joined the band last year, said “I feel incomplete, because I am used to start my day at the studio and then having a gig.”

Live shows were the main source of income for local musicians. The popular party band used to charge from €1,500 to €3,000 for concerts, depending on the location.

Despite the fact that most band members have a second job, the band’s inactivity impacted them financially.

“I lost half of my income” said guitar player Harrys Pari who is also working as a civil engineer. “But I am thankful I had some money coming in as the unemployment benefit is not enough to cover my bills.”

Three of the band’s members, the guitarist, drummer and the singer have small children and are depending on their partner’s salary and benefits.

“Obviously my wife pulls most of the weight right now” Chris J and father of a three-year-old son said. Kapatais, father of a two-year-old daughter said he did not return back to his morning job as a sales development manager work since March. He had to rely on the €600-unemployment benefit.

Speaking on behalf of musicians,Constantinos Amerikanos said “We feel that we are not being respected. We are constantly shoved in the margins.”

The government granted the submission of special support allowance for artists amounting to €900. “It is a negligible amount” the drummer commented. “It adds up to just €300 for each month the island was in lockdown.”

The emergency grant submission started in the second week of July, almost four months in the pandemic and following a protest by actors and other cultural workers in the beginning of the month. The emergency benefit is yet to be shared to all artists, while no other support measures were announced for the arts during Covid-19.

“There are so many things they can do. The state should follow international examples, such as Malta, on how to support the music industry” Amerikanos added.

Savva suggested the state should offer musicians and actors spaces to perform for free, while Chris J proposed the Fair and Convention Facility in Engomi.

According to the band, the local market is too small to make profit out of album sales or sales of merchandise.

But, to remind their fans of their existence, the band is planning to release an album in a few weeks. The third Minus One album will feature the band’s favourite versions of Queen songs to Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise.

“Got It Covered” will be released online and the band is ‘realistically optimistic’ about its success.

“As a Cypriot band we don’t’ expect sales from albums, we only want to get exposure,” Kapatais said. “But you never know, this is a cover album, perhaps people will respond to it” he added.

The band’s previous album, Red Black White, released in 2018 received a lot of good reviews and hit some sales on hard copies.

The new album is sponsored/funded by their manager Giampiero Soncini or GP for short, who has been representing the band since prior their Eurovision entry in 2016.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the recordings had to be done individually in the Elbow Room, the studio owned by guitarist Amerikanos and bass player Savva. The mixing of the album will take place abroad.

Apart from working on the album, the band put together two online concerts during lockdown. “It all started from a scheduled concert at Savino Live, that got cancelled and we ended up doing it online without payment” Harrys Pari said. “We thought why not, we did it for our fans.”

The band also made a few music videos with clips sent to them by their fans, which got thousands of hits on their social media.

“The initial idea was to somehow entertain people who were stuck at home, even if there is no financial profit for us” Pari added.

Minus One are looking forward to start doing live shows again but are also scared for about a resurgence of the virus. “I don’t’ think we will be working in September” Amerikano said, while Chris J said “even if we are allowed to work in September, no one will book us. People won’t invest in any future events.” Kapatais added to the mix suggesting that “If we will start working we will probably do so in the minimum amount of money we can get.”

CORONAVIRUS - NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY IN FIGHT AGAINST THE VIRUS, MINISTRY SAYS

Cyprus Mail 15 July 2020 - by Jonathan Shkurko

File photo (Photo: Christos Theodorides)

Despite Cyprus’ positive epidemiological profile, a result of the sacrifices and discipline shown by the whole society, there is no room for complacency and measures must be relaxed slowly and gradually, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

The statement came one day after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed concerns regarding the new surge in Covid-19 cases worldwide.

Tedros said: “too many countries are headed in the wrong direction” in the fight against the virus, claiming that people are getting mixed messages from leaders and that, without basic measures being followed, the pandemic is going to get worse very soon.

He also added that measures such as social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks in appropriate situations needed to be taken seriously.

The health ministry echoed Tedros’ recommendations, saying people in Cyprus must behave more responsibly to reduce the possibility of a new outbreak on the island, like what happened recently in countries such as Israel, Spain, and Germany, where partial lockdowns have been imposed.

Of complaints by nightclub owners and events’ organisers, who are calling for the reopening of clubs and have urged the government to allow for concerts and festivals to go ahead, the ministry said their demands were understandable but the risk of the virus spreading in such conditions was still too high.

“There is a high possibility of new cases spreading during large open events. Those cases will also be extremely difficult to track,” the ministry said.

“That is why our intention is to allow the reopening of clubs and the organisation of concerts and festivals from September onwards and always under strict conditions and with health and safety protocols in place. We don’t want to risk a setback now.”
