ONLINE PROTECTION MEASURES SUCH AS ONLINE FRAUD AND INTERCEPTION OF PERSONAL DATA

From Cyprus Police:

Several offenses in the modern times we live are through the internet, either through the use of electronic means of social networking and e-mails or through various websites, but also through modern telephone devices.

These offenses involve online frauds and money-laundering, personal data theft, and even publications of child pornography.

With reference to the recent incidents of online fraud, the following is a series of measures that the public can take to safer use of the internet, avoiding the various pitfalls and risks.

1.  It is important to realise that behind a computer can be any person, who may even be a criminal.

2.  We should only interact online with people we know and if it is absolutely necessary to share personal information, photos, information about our family status, we can do this only through our private communication and not on an online site accessible to any other user of the Internet.

3.  When we do not know the sender of an e-mail we do not open this message for reading and we do not reply with our e-mail. If we suspect that this message is malicious or virus-related, we will delete it in order to avoid any breach of our computer and possible misuse of our personal data and data.

4.  We prefer websites that contain the acronym "https", in their e-mail addresses, "s" means security, especially if we are going to make any product purchase or payment via internet.

5.  Several times, people who have been "harassed" or have been victims of fraud, do not report these incidents to the police. This helps internet criminals continue their illegal work and remain unpunished. The reporting of such incidents of online crime to the Police may prove to be a catalyst in preventing such crimes.

The competent Police Office - the Office for Combating Electronic Crime, is available to the public daily, including weekends and public holidays (7am - 7pm), on 22808200 for any complaint or even for simple advice. In addition, the public may also make a complaint through the Police Complaint Form at the following email address:

In the following links are the previous announcements of the Cyprus Police concerning two examples of fraud on the Internet.

THEFT FROM PARKED VEHICLES - some simple steps to take

From Cyprus Police:

Incidents of theft of property from parked vehicles are observed at regular intervals, as property left unattended within the cars is easy to be stolen.

For the sake of preventing such phenomena and in addition to the police's efforts to deter vehicle theft, the public is urged to be particularly careful and to take further measures to protect its property more effectively.

Indicatively, there is a series of preventive measures that citizens are encouraged to take to prevent theft from vehicles or even theft of the vehicle itself:

1.  Inside our vehicle, we should never leave exposed objects of value, bags, wallets, briefcases, mobile phones, laptops or other items that can attract the attention  of thieves or cause malicious damage, such as breaking a window or vehicle door.

2.  We should park in proper carparks - this is safer, does not obstruct any traffic nor does it obsstruct other residents.

3.  During the night it is preferable to park our vehicle in places where there is enough road lighting. Avoid dark or isolated spots.

4.  Make sure we remove the vehicle keys, lock the doors and fully raise the windows of our vehicle.

Generally, the public is urged to be alert and to work closely with the Police and, if it finds anything suspicious, such as persons or vehicles that are suspected, or knows anything about such theft, immediately informs the local Police Station or to communicate with the Citizen's Contact Line at 1460, as this can help identify suspects, track down theft cases and prevent such incidents in the future.

Finally, having always as a priority our physical integrity, security and health, we avoid any confrontation with any suspect person who may also react aggressively against us. Discriminatory observation of suspects and immediate notification to the Police is the safer handling of such incidents by citizens.

PEOPLE BUYING MEDS IN THE NORTH MUST SIGN WAIVER, HEALTH MINISTRY SAYS

Cyprus Mail - article by George Psyllides, 7 September 2018

People buying medications from the north must sign a declaration assuming responsibility for their action, the health ministry said on Friday, in the wake of a government announcement that residents of the Republic can procure medicines for private use.
The government’s move followed the ever-increasing numbers of Geek Cypriots who venture to the north to buy their meds where prices for many products oftentimes being 50 per cent or more cheaper.
The decision has also irked pharmaceutical companies whose association Sfek issued a statement on Thursday warning that meds sold in the north were unregulated and posed serious risks to patients’ lives.

On Friday, the health ministry said it had given guidelines on the matter following a legal opinion issued by the attorney-general in 2007.
Based on the guidelines, people can buy medications for a one-month treatment.
The person however, must sign a declaration assuming responsibility for possible adverse effects to their health from the use of the product since health authorities in the Republic cannot check or secure the authenticity or quality, the ministry said.
On Thursday, Sfek criticised the government decision to allow purchases for private consumption, suggesting it violated the laws of the Republic and also cast shadows over the state’s pricing policy.
“We reiterated that buying medicines from the occupied areas involves serious dangers for patients’ health and all citizens in general,” Sfek said.

It said drugs were sold illegally by pharmacies which may not observe the rules for proper storage, are not subjected to EU checks and no one knows whether pharmacists have been trained to exercise the profession.
