olmayan uzak

LAST RESTING PLACE

Last resting place - Taken from InCyprus

Claims that there is no interest in the establishment of a crematorium in Cyprus has triggered firm opposition from a funeral home in Paphos which has been at the heart of the campaign for such a facility for years and has applied for an operating licence.

Reportedly only 18 people were sent abroad for cremation over the last decade indicating little demand for the service.
But Maureen Watt, who co-directs Angel Guardians Funeral Home in Paphos with business partner Neofytos Christodoulides disagree.
“We have repatriated about 25 people alone this year for cremation. We’re just at the start of August and we’re only one funeral home,” she said.
Cyprus is one of three EU states, along with Malta and Greece, which do not have crematorium facilities, although the Greek government passed a law permitting cremation earlier this year. In April, parliament finally passed a long-awaited bill legalising cremation in Cyprus. Watt has been campaigning for a cremation for close to 10 years while Clive Turner, also a Paphos resident, has also been central in the fight for a crematorium.
Turner has collected close to 12,000 signatures from supporting expats and Cypriots on a petition.
The push for a crematorium has increased over recent years as more and more British expats in particular have relocated to Cyprus.
The most recent government population Census from 2011 said there were 31,495 British nationals living on the island.  Watt said people who felt they were coming to the end of their lives were starting to return to the UK owing to the desire for cremation.
“They don’t want to be buried,” she said. “A crematorium would help people stay on the island and attract business from surrounding Levant and Gulf countries that don’t have the facilities.”
“When a loved one is cremated, family members come to the service and these people need somewhere to stay and to eat.
“Greece has a licence, but the government has no money to build a crematorium. There will be a crematorium in Cyprus before there’s one in Greece.”
The funeral director said, through her work and campaigning, she had detected an increase in favour towards cremation amongst younger Greek-Cypriots under the age of 55.
“They want it because it will free up the land for much-needed cemeteries.”
In Cyprus, initially the Orthodox Church was adamantly against the presence of a crematorium, as the process of cremation violates religious views on how the remains of a deceased person should be treated.
However, the Church eventually acknowledged that it was an individual’s right to choose how their body was disposed of after death and lifted the prohibition while stressing that it did not intend to be involved in helping to set up a crematorium.
Watt and Christodoulides have started the multi-stage application process eight weeks ago.
“We weren’t the only applicant either and the government wouldn’t be paying for a crematorium. It would be a long-term private investment. ”
Watt regularly liaises with Paphos Municipality when trying to secure burial space for clients. She currently needs to make two burials for which she is seeking alternative arrangements owing to a lack of cemetery space in Paphos.
“The mayor told us that the cemetery in Exo Vrisi will have 350 more plots available by the end of this year. I told him that it would be filled up again within six months to a year.”

WATER - THOSE PREVIOUSLY RECEIVING SUPPLY FROM THE MONASTERY OR LEPTOS

Regarding the transfer of water from the Monastery and Leptos, users are reminded that from 1st July all billing for water consumed will be done on a 3 monthly basis as opposed to the previous two.  This may change the price bracket that applies if your water consumption is high and caution is therefore recommend until users see the impact on their water bills.  In any event, please bear in mind that following a very dry winter, water levels in the reservoirs are low and water cuts at some time in the future cannot be ruled out if the dry period continues.

Consumers who have settled their bills through bank transfers to the Monastery or Leptos for their water supply are kindly requested to cancel them and call into Tala Council office with a view to completing a new bank transfer form to enable water bills to be paid to the Council.   To ensure that the bills for the period 1st July to 30th September can be settled by bank transfer, please ensure that you visit the council offices [with details of your bank account and IBAN details] before the 20th September otherwise it will be assumed that you wish to pay your account on a quarterly basis in cash.

Please also bear in mind that to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience, all outstanding debts should be settled with the Monastery or Leptos before existing bank transfers are cancelled and new arrangements made with Tala Council.    In the event that outstanding debts are not settled with the Monastery or Leptos, then your water supply is likely to be affected.

Please also note that Tala Council use a different computer system and bank collection scheme to Kili and Tala therefore require you to visit the council office with your IBAN number and account information if you wish to pay by bank transfer.

Napoleon Never Started A War

Hear me out.

A heavily romanticised portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, painted by Jacques-Louis David (1801)
Contrary to the often dramatised caricature of a mad, power-hungry & incredibly short Frenchman, Napoleon Bonaparte had never started a war during his time as emperor of the French.

In the space of 12 years (1803-1815), France was the target of seven international coalitions of European powers, determined to isolate and dismantle the French state for disrupting the status quo of European politics that had been thrown in disarray after the French revolution. All seven wars were declared upon France, not by it.

When confronted with war, Napoleon took to the offensive, that is a given. But how often in contemporary culture do we find ourselves briefly referring to Napoleon as "that crazy French guy who wanted world domination". In Franceshi & Weider's book on The Wars Against Napoleon: Debunking the Myth of the Napoleonic Wars (review), is is argued;
Napoleon had an ‘obsessive attachment to peace’, maintained his ‘intangible principle of avoiding conflicts’, never provoked a war, and never took the initiative in declaring war: even his invasion of Russia in June 1812 was a reluctant response to Tsar Alexander’s ultimatum of April 1812 which ‘in fact if not in law’ had established a state of hostilities between the two empires. - See more at: http://www.historytoday.com/ad-harvey/wars-against-napoleon#sthash.q9rB9qV7.dpuf

While of course his assembling of the Grande Armée (the largest standing army at the time) certainly doesn't rank well for his peacekeeping reputation nor does his unprecedented invasion of Russia, his motivation was the protection of his homeland. He often was quoted as saying "France before all else".

I'm not saying Napoleon not declaring war makes him a saint, perhaps he was egotistical (he did install himself & his own family upon several European thrones, after all). Hitler himself didn't declare a war until December 1941 (on the United States) two years into WWII. All I wish to say is to think of these casual biases. Somehow someway these biases have ingrained and disseminated themselves in popular culture; perhaps it is the result of clever propaganda, a case of the victors writing history, or simple, lazy misinformation.

Whatever the cause, the takeaway message is to HOW and WHY you think of historical figures in negative and positive views. After all, we're all bound to be biased.

Blueberry Jam

One of my favorite things about summer is collecting the abundance of fruit. (I am kind of squirrel like, packing as many varieties as I can find into the freezer for winter baking.)
Last weekend my sister gifted me a five pound box of blueberries. She knows how to make me happy! I put a couple of pounds in the freezer, a pound in the refrigerator for eating and that left a few pounds for Jam!

I had visions of all the lovely pictures I was going to take of the luscious blueberry jam, a pot full of fresh blueberries, the thickening fruit bubbling in the pot, a bowlful of crystalline sugar flowing into the jam, but that did not happen.....

Once, I got everything set up for jam and put the pot on the stove, my Mom came in and distracted me. I was also trying to wash the dinner dishes, stir the fruit and clear a space on the kitchen table. As you can see, too much multi-tasking! Ah well! I did remember to take a few quick photos of the jam in jars at lest.

My favorite way to make jam is with the No Sugar Needed Sure-Gel, that way I can use little sugar as I like. These were lovely sweet blueberries so I decreased the sugar to 2 cups to 8 cups of berries.
The jars look very vintage don't they? I just grabbed a few from the stash in the basement not even noticing until they were filled with jam. Isn't the "Self Sealing" Kerr jar neat?

Delicious! Of course, I had to whip up a batch of biscuits so we could all sample the Blueberry Jam! Blue Ribbon for sure!

Are you planning on making jam this summer? What is your favorite recipe?
