APRIL 14 = Lincoln is Assassinated

"I heard the discharge of a pistol behind me, and, looking round, saw through the smoke a man between the door and the President. I heard the man shout some word which I thought was "Freedom!" I instantly sprang toward him and seized him. He wrested himself from my grasp, and made a violent thrust at my breast with a large knife. I parried the blow by striking it up, and received a wound several inches deep in my left arm.... the man rushed to the front of the box, and I endeavored to seize him again, but only caught his clothes as he was leaping over the railing of the box...."

Major Henry Rathbone Describes the Assassination of President Lincoln

This was the testimony of U.S. Army Major Henry R. Rathbone (below) describing the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth at about 10:15 on the evening of today's date, April 14, in 1865.  Major Rathbone was in the box with President and Mrs. Lincoln at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. attending that evening's performance of the comedy "Our American Cousin"  Booth,

an actor and a Confederate sympathizer had hatched a plot with several accomplices to kill Lincoln and other high officials. Secretary of State William Seward suffered a knife wound in his home from one of Booth's conspirators, but the rest of the plot fizzled. Only Booth himself managed to follow through on the plan. His conspiracy has been the subject of countless books and films, including "Killing Lincoln". the fascinating best seller by Bill O'Reilly.  Mr. O'Reilly's book is a page-turner that you won't be able to put down.  It details the conspiracy quite well.  But what happened to our President that terrible night? As Major Rathbone further testified, Lincoln was gravely wounded:

"I then turned to the President; his position was not changed; his head was slightly bent forward and his eyes were closed. I saw that he was unconscious, and, supposing him mortally wounded, rushed to the door for the purpose of calling medical aid."

Gideon Welles Describes Lincolns Death

President Lincoln had indeed been mortally wounded by a single shot to the back of his head. He was carried to a boarding house across the street from Ford's theater, where the doctors who were present determined that his life could not be saved, and that he had but a few hours to live. Several members of Lincoln's cabinet were present as he lay dying. One of them, Navy Secretary Gideon Welles later described the scene:

"The giant sufferer lay diagonally extended across the bed, which was not long enough for him. He had been stripped of his clothes. His large arms, which were occasionally exposed, were of a size which one would scarce have expected from his spare appearance. His slow, full respiration lifted the (bed) clothes with each breath that he took. His features were calm and striking. I had never seen them appear to better advantage than for the first hour, perhaps, that I was there. After that, his right eye began to swell and that part of his face became discolored."

The report in the New York Times on the morning of the 16'th:

"At 7:20 o'clock the President breathed his last, closing his eyes as if falling to sleep, and his countenance assuming an expression of perfect serenity. There were no indications of pain, and it was not known that he was dead until the gradually decreasing respiration ceased altogether."

Booth is Cornered; the Public Reacts to News of Lincoln's Death

President Lincoln lingered on into the morning of April 15, when his breathing finally ceased shortly before 7:30 a.m. John Wilkes Booth, who had broken his leg in his leap from the Presidential box at Ford's Theater, escaped capture that night, and remained at large for some days before being cornered by an Army search party in a barn at Bowling Green, Virginia on April 26. There, with the barn in flames, he was killed by a gunshot by one of his pursuers which severed his spinal cord.   Later on the morning of Lincoln's death, Secretary Welles went to the White House. He was greatly affected by what he saw of the public reaction to the news of Lincoln's death when he stepped outside:

"There was a cheerless cold rain and everything seemed gloomy. On the avenue in front of the White House were several hundred colored people, mostly women and children, weeping and wailing their loss. This crowd did not appear to diminish through the whole of that cold wet day. They seemed not to know what was to be their fate since their great benefactor was dead, and their hopeless grief affected me more than almost anything else, though strong and brave men wept when I met them."

The Girl Who Runs Through Fire

It was a hard weekend. If you read this post, you know that I had an extremely busy week. It was a good week; very productive, but it took so much out of me. I am a giver. If I love someone or something I give and give and give. Sometimes you give so much, that there is nothing left in you. On Friday evening when I was finally able to leave work, I was exhausted. I planned to take Saturday off from the gym, but decided to take Friday off instead. I came home, cleaned for an over an hour, picked up dinner, and played my guitar for a few hours. By 10 PM I could not keep my eyes open any longer so I went to bed.

Friday night I had a really bad dream. I woke up Saturday morning with tears in my eyes. Waking up crying is probably one of the worst ways to start your day. It did not set a good tone. My body was aching; as was my heart and soul. I was empty. I was exhausted. 

I took the day to myself. I felt that I needed to be alone and regroup. I played my guitar, went and got my hair done, ran a few errands, and watched a movie. I thought taking time to myself, cutting myself off from the world, and trying to rest up would help me feel better. It did, but not a lot. 

Yesterday I awoke feeling better. I knew I planned to spend the day hiking, which makes me really happy. I got dressed, packed my backpack, and I was off. I still felt fatigued and tired, but I knew I needed to go. I arrived to the mountain and prepped to start my dual trail. I had a 4 hour hike planned - 10 miles. The Monday before last, I planned to do that, but I only made it 8 miles.

I started my dual trail. Spiritually, I was motivated, but mentally and physically, I was not. Nonetheless, I started my brisk walk. After a couple of minutes, this beautiful woman with gorgeous, long legs walked past me like I was a slug. I watched her walk like she had a motor in her backpack pushing her along. She inspired me.

She inspired me to push harder and make myself do a good job. Happiness is a choice; I firmly believe and and tell everyone that. I felt sorry for myself, dwelled in my apartment, and it was time to let my pain go. I approached my first big hill on my trail. I thought I would try and run it. I have been extensively training for a couple of months now with hiking, plus increasing the intensity of my cardio in the gym. Now would be a great time to add running into my hikes. So I did. I reached the top and thought I would be completely out breath, hunched over, and exhausted. I wasn't. I was liberated. I instantly felt my soul coming alive again. So I kept going.

Almost every single hill I came to while hiking the mountain, I would run it. I would catch my breath, speed walk for a while, then get back to running. I could not believe that I was running parts of this mountain. This was the mountain, that a year ago, I could not even walk without stopping every 10 minutes. A year ago, I was doing a shorter trail there and crying out of frustration because I could not believe how hard it was to do. 

By the time I reached the last 1/2 mile, which is an incredibly steep incline that leads to the very top, I thought I was not going to make it. Damn, it was hard... but I kept going. Slowly, I walked. I never stopped though. I put one foot in front of the other; sweat pouring off of me like I was a water faucet, and I kept going. 

I reached the top of the mountain and I don't think sitting on a rock ever felt so good. The sun warmed me; which felt like a hug from nature and the light breeze was the perfect "you did it". 

In my short 24 years on this earth, I have learned two things about pain: you can let the fire define you and drown in it OR you can walk through. You can walk through the flames, let it burn you (because it will) and if you just keep going, you will eventually come to the end. At the end, you will become a stronger person. 

Life has thrown me an abundance of change over the past 6 months. Majority of the change has been the best thing to ever happen to me - but it is not easy. However, only over the past month have I been battling emotional emptiness and pain; which to me, is the worst. It's hell on earth. But every single day, I keep going. 

I did my 10 miles today. I finished in 3 hours and 56 minutes. My Polar band decided to stop working, which irritated me (I would have loved to have seen the total caloric burn and where my heart rate stayed towards the end), but I kept going. I was thankful the mountain was not crowded today because when I finished, I collapsed by my car for a few minutes. I just had to stop and rest. That hike was physically the hardest thing I have ever done. 

I think I told myself 50 times "you did it Liz". A year ago, this girl could not even walk up a mountain. I was 45 pounds heavier, cringing at my reflection, at a staleness in life, and I was losing my drive. I was losing my positive, wild spirit. And now here I am. I am alone, but it is a good thing. Pain can bring out the best in you, if you choose to see it that way. That is how I view hardships now in life. I will take the pain, accept it, and no matter what happens, I will keep going.

Tala Council Newsletter April 2014

SAPA

After a very difficult couple of months, I am delighted to advise that SAPA finally agreed to freeze payments from Tala residents for the sewerage until the end of 2016.   Those of you who have received invoices, can therefore ignore these.

I was called to a subsequent meeting at SAPA when a number of people attempted to get this decision reversed [probably as Peyia have now applied to have their charges postponed for 12 months].  However, I am pleased to advise that sense prevailed and the decision to freeze charges for Tala until the end of 2016 applies.   The matter has now been referred to the Government for a decision as to what should happen at the end of 2016.

Anyone who has paid the SAPA invoice will, I am afraid, have to wait until the Government confirms one way or another what is going to happen to Tala – this is for legal reasons as the Department of Ministers has to approve rebates and they will not do this if there is any possibility that charges may still apply at some time.  This position has changed somewhat from what was originally advised unfortunately.

We still intend to attempt to get Tala excluded from the SAPA road-based sewerage system if at all possible.   Freezing the charges for Tala at least allows us more time to negotiate with the relevant departments.    

I had a good meeting with the Water Board in Nicosia.  They have advised that Tala has their full support and they wish to use Tala as a test case to show that the Government did not interpret the EU ruling correctly in respect of sewerage.  The Water Board will be in Tala during the next few weeks and it will be interesting to see where their findings take us!

POST OFFICE

Following the resignation of Andreas, the vacancy created has been advertised and the position filled.   The successful candidate was Yiota so please allow her a little time to find her feet and get used to addresses.  

EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

For those with an election in the European elections, a list of the candidates standing for Cyprus can be found on http://europedecides.eu/candidates/election-lists/cy/

Cyprus will have 6 MEPs.

GRAFFITI, VANDALISM, ETC

I am sorry to report that we have had more graffiti on the walls around the amphitheatre.   As a result security cameras have been installed and photographic evidence of the offenders will be handed over to the Police. 

There has also been a report of vandals throwing lemons, water bombs and some stones at motorists passing the school.   Despite efforts, we have been unable to trace the offenders.  

We have also had a report of vandalism to cars parked overnight at the car park behind the square, and theft of wing mirrors from a vehicle parked on a house driveway.  

We are investigating additional security measures  for various locations around the village, but I ask that everyone remain vigilant and if they see anything suspicious, to please take a description of the offenders and advise the Police.

DOGS

The Council receives a lot of complaints about dogs – whether it be regarding the noise that they make, fouling or wandering the streets.  As the Police appear not to be interested, a  decision has been made by the Council to write to all owners about whom complaints have been received.   If there is no improvement after the warning letter, legal action will be taken against the owners.

COLLAPSING HOUSES AT THE ENTRANCE TO KAMARES

Following on from my last update, the Electricity Board have been asked to tie back the poles again as they are leaning away from the concrete structure.   I appreciate that everyone still has concerns about these buildings, but the District Office is monitoring the situation on a regular basis.

NATURE PATH

The Council has approved the building of a nature path which will go either from the back of the old car park, or from the bend adjacent to the collapsing houses.   The path will lead up to the monastery.   EU funding is being applied for for this project.

NEW CEMETERY

Progress in respect of the above is very slow.   To give you some background, the new church was built on land belonging to the Education Ministry.   An agreement was reached with the previous council and the Church, that the Education Ministry would be given a plot of land of 6.5 donums, this land abutting church land of the same size.   The Church have offered to lease this 6.5 donum piece of land to the Council to build a cemetery, however, whilst the lease is for 99 years, there is a clause that if the cemetery is not built within 5 years, the Church will take the land back.  

We have a long way to go before the necessary permissions and permits are obtained and, unfortunately, work cannot proceed until all these are in place.

THE SQUARE.

I am pleased to advise that the preliminary permit for reformation of the square has been obtained.  We now, therefore, have what is called a ‘mature project’ and we will be applying for European funding.  

GARDEN WASTE SITE

Some of you will be aware that we had another fire at the site and this has led to further complaints from those living in the area.   As a result, anyone who has garden waste to dispose of should please phone the council or call into the council office, and arrangements will be made to open up the site for them. 

COMPUTER SYSTEM AT THE COUNCIL OFFICE

Slow progress is being made in respect of the new system.   We are, therefore, considering bringing in unemployed university graduates who are available under a new Government incentive to help young qualified people gain experience in the workplace.   Under this incentive, the Government pays their salary for a 6 month period and it is felt that their input will ensure that the project is completed as they gain valuable work experience.

COUNCIL WEBSITE & BLOGSPOT

Following the launch of the new website [www.thevillagexpress.com – click on Union Jack and type in Tala for the relevant information] we realised that the site did not suit all the requirements of  Tala given the diversity of events and information we provide.

So, in addition to the website, we now have a blog site – talanews.blogspot.com.  On this site you will find details of all the events, past and present, and the newsletters.    In addition, you can now subscribe if you wish to be notified of events and when the newsletter is available.   Simply log onto the blog and at the right hand side of the screen you will see ‘Follow by email’.  Simply type in your email address and press submit and you will be notified when anything new is added to the blog.

It is hoped that by providing both sites, all our needs in the foreseeable future can be handled. 

We are also investigating whether we can simplify ticket booking for events at the amphitheatre.   If this can be done via the blog site, you will be advised, but in the meantime, please notify Cathi if you wish to reserve tickets for collection on the door.

WATER BILLS FOR THOSE ON TALA WATER

Just a reminder for those on Tala water that meter readings were carried out at the end of March and you can now call into the office to pay your latest bill.   Paper bills will not be issued until after the June readings.

NEW CHURCH – HALL, MUSEUM & LIBRARY

A number of people have spoken to me to ask if the hall, museum and library are to be named as it is felt that ‘the hall underneath the new church’ does not convey the correct image, even if it does make clear where the venue is!   As the premises are the property of the Archbishop, I have raised this issue with him and await his advices.  

NATIONAL CRIME AGENCY HELP REQUIRED

The National Crime Agency continue to pursue criminals thought to be on the island of Cyprus.   The current list of wanted offenders is shown on http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/news/356-second-operation-zygos-campaign-hunts-criminals-in-cyprus  and there is an appeal for everyone to keep a look out and notify the agency if they see any of those listed.

ART EXHIBITION

For art lovers, Maria Etheridge, a Tala resident, is holding an inaugural exhibition from Thursday 8^th May [starting at 7pm] until the 22^ndMay.   This will be held at Zante Restaurant  just 8 kilometres outside Limassol on the Troodos road.   To make the first exhibition something special and different, it will be entitled “Wish you were here” and will feature only postcard art – each piece of art conforming to a specific size. However, such an apparent limitation will not hamstring the artists as they can use any medium they want and let their imagination run riot. It will be fascinating to see what will be on display.

Türk ARMY'ler~~~! Kısa zamanda herkesin dikkatini çekmiş BANGTAN'ın dikkatini çekmek için kolları sıvadık! 12 Haziran'da 1. yıllarını tamamlayacak olan BANGTAN'a BANGTAN TURKEY olarak tüm Türk ARMY'lerin adına hediye göndermeyi planlıyoruz (^.^)b

Sayfamıza gelen birçok mesajdan sonra bu projeye sizleri de eklemeyi düşündük ve projeyi bu amaçla şekillendirdik^^ Siz de bize yardımcı olmak istiyorsanız işte yapabilecekleriniz:

5000'e yaklaşan bir sayfadan birbirinden farklı ve orjinal fikirler çıkacağına inanıyoruz. Telefon casus teknolojisinin ilk geliştiği zamanlardaki yazılımlar pekte stabil olmayan yazılımlardı ve kullanıldıkları telefonlarda donmalar, konuşma aralarında biplemelere telefon ışığında yanıp sönmelere kadar birçok lag içermektelerdi ve bu yüzdende kullanıcısı açısından sıkıntılı durumlar ortaya çıkabilmekteydi, zaman geçtikçe ise hem telefonların kapasitelerinin artıp artık akıllı telefon formatına geçmeleri hemde yazılım şirketlerinin kendi açıklarını geçen bu zaman zarfında kapatmaları ve yazılımlarına daha da ileri fonksiyonlar eklemeleri neticesinde günümüzdeki süper casus yazılımlar diyebileceğimiz ve çalıştıkları telefonlarda hiç bir uyarı vermeyen telefon izleme, takip ve dinleme programları ortaya çıkmıştır.

Sektöre olan talebin oldukça yüksek bir seviyede olması ve bunu fırsat bilen büyük yazılım şirketleri arge çalışmalarına ayırdıkları bütçeyi dahada arttırma yolunu seçmiş ve müthiş bir rekabet içerisinde olan bu piyasada var oluşlarını sürdürmeye çalışmışlardır.
