Initial Days Of Barbarossa: Germans In Russia

Barbarossa. The German foray into Russia in 1941. There are many many images available about it. I have tried to show here only very rarely seen pictures of the early days of the German invasion of Soviet Union.

German troops cross the border and walk into Soviet Russia. An event that would have calamitous consequences for Germany four years later.

But when the bad boys from the Einsatzgruppen came in the wake of the Wehrmacht it began to dawn on the people there that the Germans were worse; they turned against them.

ATTACK ON GRODNO

In the darkness of the night of June 23, 1941 an infernal fire from the heavens suddenly rocked Grodno. Grodno was one of those cities in the Russian zone which was the first to be the victim of the lightning air raid by the Nazi warplanes. Wave after wave of air raids stormed down upon Grodno, spreading a hailstorm of bombs, explosions and fires. The first bombs fell in the area of the bridge by the Nieman river, near the army barracks. A paralyzing panic overtook the distraught residents, who at first did not realize the extent of their tragedy, and had no idea as to how and where to find refuge.

The Soviet forces retreated in panic, taking with them only their own people and local residents who had worked in the administrative apparatus.

Waffen SS soldiers examine the Stalin Line

WHAT WAS THE STALIN LINE?

The Stalin Line was a line of fortifications along the western border of the Soviet Union. Work began on the system in the 1920s to protect the USSR against attacks from the West. The line was made up of concrete bunkers and gun emplacements, somewhat similar but less elaborate than the Maginot Line. It was not a continuous line of defenses along the entire border but rather a network of fortified regions, meant to channel the potential invaders along certain corridors.

In the aftermath of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, with the westward expansion of the USSR in 1939 and 1940, into Poland, the Baltic, and Bessarabia the decision was made to abandon the line in favour of constructing the so-called Molotov Line further west, along the new border of the USSR. A number of Russian generals felt that it would be better to keep both lines and have defence in depth, but this conflicted with the pre-World War II Soviet military doctrine. Thus the guns were moved, but were mostly in storage as the new line began construction.

The 1941 German invasion caught the new line unfinished and the Stalin Line largely abandoned and in disrepair. Neither was thus of any use in stopping the onslaught of Operation Barbarossa, though parts of the Stalin Line were manned in time and contributed to the defense. Following World War II, the line was not maintained, in part due to its wide dispersal across the USSR. Unlike in Western Europe, where similar fortifications were demolished for development and safety reasons, much of the line survived beyond the breakup of the USSR in 1991 due to being ignored. Today, the remains of the Stalin Line fortifications are located in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine

The Germans get a taste of the Russian rains. Russia had poor roads, many of them were just mud tracks. The rains turned them into a slush that became a nightmare for the Germans. Here men of the 7th Panzer Division move through the Soviet countryside.

STALIN'S ORDER NO.207

At the onset of the Great Patriotic War between Germany and the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin issued the infamous Order Number 207 on August 16, 1941. The order condemned those who surrendered to the enemy and, regardless of the circumstances, those soldiers and commanders were treated as traitors and enemies of the people.

“We have no prisoners of war, only traitors of the motherland!” Stalin declared, giving the main idea behind Order No. 270. It was issued several months after Hitler’s army had entered the territory of the Soviet Union. Poorly-armed Soviet forces were suffering defeat after defeat against the superior army of the enemy. Stalin’s aim was to put the blame on someone for the losses and quickly dispel undesirable doubt as to his power and the victory of the Red Army.

First to bear the blame in Stalin’s order were the awarded Red Army commanders, Generals Nikolay Kirillov and Pavel Ponedelin, who had been taken prisoner by the Germans earlier that month. The Nazi’s used the fact of the war prisoners as propaganda. Both generals were photographed next to German officers and leaflets with those photos were scattered over the positions of Red Army troops.

Of course, there were those soldiers who displayed cowardice and had surrendered immediately, and others who had deserted and allied themselves with the enemy. But the plague of Order No. 270 was that it doomed anyone who was captured by the enemy, without any specific proof, investigation or consideration of circumstances. Under Stalin’s order, Soviet soldiers were to fight to the death, and those who were captured had either to escape or commit suicide. Those who didn’t have the inner strength to do so deserved a single verdict – execution. Families of commanders who were taken prisoners were subject to arrest and those of general soldiers were deprived of any state allowance and assistance.

According to Stalin, both Ponedelin and Kirillov were “fully capable of fighting their way back to their troops, but instead gave way to panic, turned into cowards and deserted to the enemy.” They were sentenced in absentia to execution by shooting. Ponedelin’s wife and father were sentenced to five years in camps as relatives of a traitor. Ponedelin and Kirillov remained in a fascist prison camp until the end of war. When they returned to their motherland, both were sent to Lefortovo prison in Moscow and executed for treason in 1950. It was noted that, just before the execution took place, Ponedelin said “I’m dying with peace, because after all it is my native Russian soil that will take in my ashes.” After Stalin’s death, cases of former prisoners of war were reviewed by a special committee who launched an investigation. In 1956, Nikolay Kirillov and Pavel Ponedelin were rehabilitated, but sadly too late to have any effect on their tragic fate, and that of thousands of other brave soldiers who had fallen victim to Order No. 270.

Soviet airfield and warplanes destroyed at Lvov

THE LUFTWAFFE SUPERIORITY

The Luftwaffe's task was to neutralize the Soviet Air Force. This was not achieved in the first days of operations, despite the Soviets having concentrated aircraft in huge groups on the permanent airfields rather than dispersing them on field landing strips, making them ideal targets. The Luftwaffe claimed to have destroyed 1,489 aircraft on the first day of operations.

Hermann Göring — Chief of the Luftwaffe — distrusted the reports and ordered the figure checked. Picking through the wreckages of Soviet airfields, the Luftwaffe's figures proved conservative, as over 2,000 destroyed Soviet aircraft were found. The Luftwaffe lost 35 aircraft on the first day of combat. The Germans claimed to have destroyed only 3,100 Soviet aircraft in the first three days. In fact Soviet losses were far higher: some 3,922 Soviet machines had been lost (according to Russian Historian Viktor Kulikov).

The Luftwaffe had achieved air superiority over all three sectors of the front, and would maintain it until the close of the year. The Luftwaffe could now devote large numbers of its Geschwader (see Luftwaffe Organization) to support the ground forces.

RUSSIAN AIR FORCE IN PITIFUL STATE

In the first two days of the invasion Germany destroyed 2,500 Soviet aircraft. Many were destroyed on the ground. Others were destroyed by poor tactics. Soviet bomber wings tried to attack without fighter escort. When threatened, bombers formed tight wedges and fighters formed defensive circles.

In April 1942, Lieutenant General Alexander Novikov took command of the Red Army Air Force. He ordered that all air power be consolidated, from the individual ground units to which it was connected, into one unified force. It was around this time as well that the factories that were moved east of the Ural Mountains began full production, pumping out roughly 1000 planes a month.

This reconstitution and increased production made the Soviet air force formidable again but so did tactical advancement. “Loose pairs” began to prevail over standard formations with planes working in tandem, or one plane covering while the other attacked. Bombers began to be escorted. Four bombers would be escorted by up to ten fighters. When fighters escorted ground attack craft they split into two groups. A group that flew with the formation and a group that flew high above and about half a mile (800M) ahead to scout for enemy patrols. By 1945 the Red Army Air Force had 17 air armies each with 2 fighter divisions, 2 fighter-bomber divisions, a night bomber regiment, a reconnaissance squadron and a liaison squadron.

Exercise and Fluids - The Right Balance

Many people who do regular exercise have worked out for themselves the best times to eat, what to eat and how much to eat to work in with their workout schedule. However, the intake of fluids is sometimes overlooked and many of us rely on our thirst mechanism to tell us when and how much to drink.

Relying on this mechanism may not be sufficient, especially for those on heavy regimens or very regular exercise routines. By the time that the thirst mechanism has kicked in we may have lost up to 1 litre of fluid. This will not only have an impact on performance but another major reason for sweating - to keep the body's temperature down.

The amount of sweat produced by the body in an effort to keep the body cool will vary with environmental conditions. If it is hot and humid the amount of fluid that can be lost through sweating can reach up to 2

Diet and Exercise Tips for the Extremely Busy Person

ByTina Haines

I used to preach to people about no matter how busy you are, there is always time for exercise. While many people may still agree with that statement, I have to somewhat disagree. It was easy for me to say "no excuses" when it came to fitness - that is until I ended up working two jobs (one full-time, one part-time) as well as freelance work. When my time isn't taken up with work, I have to split my free time between family and friends. It seems that 24 hours a day is never enough!

However, I started putting on weight that I had dropped earlier in the year and I stopped exercising completely. My energy level had decreased and I feel like a big slouch. I finally put my foot down and made a plan to eat healthier and get fitness in any way I can. Below are some of the steps I am taking to reclaim a healthy lifestyle.

1. Eat 3 Meals and Still Lose Weight

I sit all day at work, yet I find myself starving at breakfast and lunch. Starvation isn't good when you're not prepared. I took the easy way out and grabbed meals at fast-food places nearby work. Believe me, after a few weeks, I was noticing the effects of constantly eating out. Now I prepare my breakfast and lunch in the evenings. I stick to protein and vegetables, cutting out the bad carbs. I pack my meals in food containers and warm them up at work. By cutting out the bad carbs (white flour, sugar, any processed food) I worry less about fat and calories.

2. Fitting in Exercise

When you're on a tight schedule, making it to the gym is near impossible. It's one of the last things you want to do after a long day. Getting up extra early to go takes a lot of motivation. I've decided to work out at home for 30 - 45 minutes on the evenings that I do not work. I perform interval training because the exercises are effective and combine resistance training with cardio.

On the evenings that I have free but still need to work from home, I set the timer on my phone for every 5 or 10 minutes. When the alarm goes off, I perform a set of exercises such as push-ups, squats, or walking lunges. I get in a workout while I am getting my work done.

As you can see, when you hear there are no excuses when it comes to health and fitness, it is true. It may seem difficult but it can be done. Make the commitment and you'll be amazed at the results you can achieve.

If you need a boost with your weight loss goals, consider supplementing with a full body cleanse. Detoxing your body with herbal supplements can help you release between 10 - 50 pounds of excess weight. Visit http://dherbs.com/store/full-body-cleanse-p-1.html for more details.

Mistakes to Avoid

ByGary L Corbin

Maybe it's a bit of ego. Maybe some people think it's a badge of honor to work through the pain. But I'm telling you now: If you get injured, stop lifting that particular body part until you've completely recovered. Continuing to lift when you're injured just exacerbates the problem - and it can lead to a greater injury (perhaps one that requires surgery).

Adding Weight Too Quickly

You should seek to improve your lifts every time you hit the gym. This means eking out a couple extra reps on the same weight you did last week. Or you can add weight to the bar and start doing your sets with this heavier weight.

However, some people add weight too quickly. For example, they'll add an extra ten pounds. The problem with that is you usually can't jump up in weight that quickly. If you try to lift it, you may injure yourself. You'll probably use bad form (often by "swinging" the weight), which doesn't help you develop and define your muscles the right way.

Your best bet is to add weight slowly, such as in 2.5 pound increments. Depending on the lift, you may be able to add five pounds at a time. But if you do, keep an eye on yourself to make sure you're maintaining good form.

Avoiding the Power Lifts

I've mentioned this a few times throughout the lessons: You should be doing big lifts for big muscle groups. These "big" lifts include deadlifts, squats, the bench press, barbell rows, chin ups, leg presses, and the shoulder press.

Most guys are happy to do bench presses (sometimes excessively). But there are plenty of guys who hate the big leg lifts like squats and deadlifts... so they skip them altogether. If that's you, suck it up and start doing the lifts. Otherwise you're going to end up looking unbalanced.

Neglecting Strength

Chances are, your goals are probably mainly aesthetic. That is, you want to look better. But in order to develop these muscles so that they look better, you need to train for strength. For example, if your tricep muscles are so weak that they're impeding your bench press, then the end result is that you're not going to be able to fully train your pectoral muscles.

The solution? Work on strengthening up ALL your muscles:

Strong triceps will help you with chest exercises.

Strong shoulders will help you with chest and back exercises.

A strong core will help you with most compound lifts.

Strong biceps will facilitate your back lifts.

A strong back will help you leg lifts (and vice versa).

A strong grip will help you improve performance on a variety of lifts, including back exercises, bicep exercises, etc.

If you're weak in one area, then do weekly isolation exercises to improve strength on those individual muscles. Once you do that, you'll see your strength and definition improve on the big muscles!

Gary.

Getting a Six Pack: Situp and Crunches Aren't Enough

Abs exercises, diet, workout, weight training, train abs, get abs, six pack

Realizing that abs exercises won't help you get abs is pretty much like discovering that santa isn't real. You'll first resist the idea, but later on you'll come to sanity and just accept it because it makes perfect sense.

Yes, if you are trying to lose your belly fat then sit ups are not the way to go. Abs exercises will help you develop good abdominal muscles, but they will not burn the fat that covers them.

If you have been trying to get abs by doing sit ups and crunches, you're welcome, now you know why it is not working.

By solely training abs you will probably develop some monstrous abs but they will still hide under your body fat, and that's why this approach doesn't work.

If you want to see fast results then what you have to do is focus on reducing your overall percentage of body fat. I mean, have you ever seen someone who has abs and yet he has some flab hanging off his hips, or ass? or about anywhere else in his body? It doesn't exist, because your body distributes fat equally on your whole body, and when he burns it, it's done pretty much the same way, so you can't have ripped abs along with a chunky body. It's a whole package deal!

The first thing you have to do to make this happen is by adjusting your diet. It is pretty easy, you will only have to cut off the saturated fat, and high glycemic carbs (a simple google search will show you the list of foods that contain these substances. If you are too lazy to do researches then check out my other articles, I have talked about these things before) and consume less carbs than what you burn.

Once you devise a good diet then associate it to a good workout program, and there you go. You have the perfect formula to get abs.

I find weight training the most effective way to burn fat, as you'll develop more muscle mass which requires more calories to maintain, and your exercise routines will get more and more intense as you get stronger. It is a pure win!

Remember to focus your workout on full body movement exercises. You can combine some abs exercises into your routine to make your midsection stronger, but do not focus your workouts solely on abs exercises as this will minimize their benefits.

You don't need hours upon hours of cardio to burn fat. All you need is an intense workout that stimulates your metabolism and fat burning hormones and a balanced diet that can speed up this process.

IF you are new to weight training, or you don't know how to devise a diet you can get a step by step program that will teach you everything from basics to advanced techniques that top shape athletes use here.

Tasty Tuesday - Steak Stuffed Pita

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp salt, or to taste
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
1 pound top round steak, 1 1/2 inches thick, trimmed
4 cups romaine lettuce, chopped
medium cucumber, diced
large tomato, diced
4-inch whole-wheat pitas, or four 8-inch pitas, split open (see Tip)

COOKING DIRECTIONS
Step 1
Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler.
Step 2
Whisk lemon juice, oil, mustard, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Place steak in a shallow dish and pour half the dressing over it. Let marinate at room temperature, turning once, for 10 minutes.
Step 3
Meanwhile, prepare the salad by adding lettuce, cucumber and tomato to the remaining dressing in the bowl; toss to coat.
Step 4
Transfer the meat to a broiling pan. Broil for 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until it reaches desired doneness. Transfer to a cutting board, let rest for 3 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain. Mix the meat with the salad and fill each pita. Serve immediately.

RECIPE TIPS
Tip: Warm pitas on the bottom rack of the oven while the steak is broiling
