THE BIOGRAPHY - ERICH KLEIBER (1890-1956)

Born in Vienna in 1890, Erich Kleiber studied in Prague, where he became chorus master at the German Theatre in 1911. From 1912 to 1919 he was in Darmstadt and then took increasingly important positions at Barmen-Elberfeld, Düsseldorf and Mannheim. In 1923 he was appointed music director of the Berlin State Opera, and over the next 11 years he directed many notable new productions, including Janácek's Jenufa and the world premiere of Berg's Wozzeck. After the advent of Nazi rule, Kleiber left Germany and settled in Argentina. He worked with several South American orchestras and opera companies, and continued to visit Europe until World War II. After the war he returned to the main continental centres and conducted with distinction at the Royal Opera House in London. He made a brief return to the Berlin State Opera in 1954-5, and died suddenly in Zürich in January 1956. Kleiber made numerous recordings between 1921 and 1955, with ensembles including the Vienna, Berlin and London Philharmonic Orchestras.
THE RECORDINGS
For collectors, there are three live performances in this compilation - Schubert's Symphony No.5 and Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel with the NDR Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg (1953), and Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony with the Czech Philharmonic (1955) - none of which have been issued commercially before. The Strauss and the Schubert are not duplicated by studio recordings, so these performances will prove especially valuable for Kleiber completists. In addition, there are three very rare commercial recordings, not available since their original release on 78s: Dvorák's 'Carnival' Overture, Josef Strauss's Sphärenklänge Waltz and the Overture to Der Zigeunerbaron, all from 1948 and with the London Philharmonic. These important recordings have been remastered from 78s held in a private collection. The recording of Mozart's Symphony No.40 (from 1949) has not been available on CD for many years and it too has been carefully remastered.

The Heart of Baguio City: Burnham Park

What is Burnham Park?

Long time ago, an American architect (Daniel Hudson Burnham) designed and prepared a blueprint of tourist attractions to be constructed at the heart of Baguio City, Philippines. One of its projects is the Burnham Park. Years after its existence, the park was remodeled and few features are added but the whole original plan was preserved to create a livelier place for the whole family and friends to enjoy.
Activities & Accommodation

The Burnham Park is consisted of twelve areas. The Burnham Lagoon is the most popular destination for people who want to learn and experience the art of rowing. Find yourself in Rose Garden, the Orchidarium, Igorot Garden, the Picnic Grove and the Sunshine Park if you are in search for serenity and wide open green spaces. Other park attractions include the Skating Rink, the Athletic Bowl, Pine Trees of the World, the Japanese Peace Tower and the Children’s Playground.

Nearby, there are also business center, meeting facilities, restaurant, WiFi rooms, coffee shop and small massage centers. Jacuzzi and steamrooms are not yet available for the time being but it is assured that Burnham Park is your ideal destinations for taking pictures.

Rates & Fees

Advanced reservation of all room types is recommended and the usual rates start at $25. The park is opened for everyone, seven-days a week.

How to Arrive at Burnham Park?

If you live near Baguio, you must ride a plane and land at Manila/Clark Airport. From there, get to Baguio by riding a car or a private plane. It is also possible to book a direct flight to Baguio (if you’re living in Visayas or Mindanao) and directly head to Burnham Park by taxi.

Monday Escapes: Book Edition

I can't stop thinking about this article that featured some of the must-visit travel destinations for 2011.  It claims that Stockholm, Sweden now tops the list of most visited European cities.  I was surprised not that Stockholm had garnered this title, but the reason behind the rising visitors:

I loved the series (see here), but the violent chase scenes through the impossible to pronounce streets, government conspiracies aimed at innocents, and the prevalence of gruesome scenes at the hands of ghastly individuals, shouldn't exactly make people say hmmmm that sounds lovely, for our next vacation: Stockholm it is.

Although for me, and many others it appears, the book did just that.

Here are some more books on my list of great reads that take you through a haunting journey through a location that should at first glance discourage a potential vacation, but entices you all the same.

Follow two recent college graduates on an often harrowing adventure through Communist China (based on the author's real experience), with a surprising twist.

This riveting tale that takes place during Franco's era in Spain, does not paint the picture of the vibrant Barcelona we all know today.  Equal parts mystery and romance, you can imagine reading this book while sipping espresso at a cafe in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.

I imagined La Sagrada Familia's Gothic architecture looking dark and ominous as I read the novel.

The setting of this Pulitzer Prize winning book of short stories from one of my favorite writers often takes place in the United States rather than India.  But the cultural and familial pull to India is a constant theme and leaves you wanting to get a glimpse in to the country that has seeped into the characters' psyches.

Both challenging and addicting, India, is a country I often long to re-visit and is also the country that I have the hardest time articulating to others who don't share my yen for traveling why that is so.

There is also the award winning movie Slumdog Millionare helming this trend (which is based on the book by the same name).  Marie Claire's recent article (January 2011) noted that in Mumbai, the
slum-facing hotel rooms are the MOST requested.  This also goes for the Four Seasons Hotel, where people seem to prefer the slum view rooms to those facing the sea.  I guess travel inspiration comes in the most unexpected of ways.

Happy reading!

100 percent entertainment and Zero percent bore! This is what the caption under the title 'House Full' says in the posters. But Hemanth Hegde disappoints in the first half and second half is quite impressive because of the confusing tactics he has used. In the second half it is a laugh riot! The strong story line and care for the first half could have saved the director Hegde from the downfall.

Parmi is trying to catch a producer so that he can become a director of a film in that Diganth will be the hero. In that notion Parmi lives with his wife Aishwarya (Girija Oak) in the house of Diganth whose grandfather is a business tycoon in South Africa. Yüreğimde Ankara Rüzgarları... ^_^ (21.12.2010)

Hele 2 yaşında olan Asya'mız 'I Love You' diyen ayıcığa resmen bayıldı.

Kendini yalnız hissedersen, yada artık yılmış yüreğindeki bize her zaman güvenebilirsin. Seviliyorsun canım :)

Summer Palace in Winter

Near Beijing, there is a palace that the royals used to use in the summertime. it is called the Summer Palace.  It gets really hot in the summertime in the city, so they enlarged Kunming lake and built a palace on the hill next to it, where they went to swim and relax. Today we went to see this marvelous place. However, as you may be aware, it is not summertime (in fact, it's downright freezing here!) You may think this may make it worse, but it actually is a sight to be seen. The entire lake is frozen over, along with all of the little channels that run through the property. People ice skate and sled on the ice.

The architecture is gorgeous. The roofs are all hip and gable and have jade statues of dragons and different sorts of other animals on the peaks. There are arched stone bridges across the channels. The interiors of the buildings are all carved woodwork, meticulously painted. The palace sits on a hill where you can see for miles and has a great view of the frozen lake with all the little skaters on it.

However, even though all of this was great, my favorite (or maybe the thing that amused me the most) was the names of things. Here are a few examples. See if you can guess what kind of structure these are.

The Realm of Multitudinous Fragrance: If your answer was "a stone and brick archway", you are right! Apparently it was thought that it resembled the holy land of the Buddha, hence the name.

Hall of Dispelling Clouds: Yup, it's a hall. It was built to celebrate the Empress' birthday.

Garden of Harmonious Interests: Yup, it's a garden. I guess you can't go there with anyone you don't agree with? P.S. Mr. Lovely and I did not go there.

Okay the last two weren't that difficult. But isn't that fun? Don't you want to visit those places? Doesn't it seem like nothing but good could come to you here? Have you read Anne of Green Gables? Don't those names sound like something she would make up? There are also names such as The Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, The Hill of Longevity, The Temple of the Sea of Wisdom and many more.

I guess what I am trying to say is, even if you come to Beijing in the winter time, don't let the name fool you; the Summer Palace is just as fun in the wintertime!!

What is your favorite place to go in the summer/winter? What is your favorite fun(ny) name of a place near you? (P.S. Near my parents' house are the towns of Cool, CA and Maybe, CA.)
