Christmas Upstairs

Mandy has had her room decorated since the beginning of November. She said she was in the Christmas mood early! We have had so much fun decorating our "new" spaces this year.

This little wooden cut out nativity was from JoAnn Fabrics. A new addition to Mandy's collection and so cute!

A couple of years ago Mandy knit an advent calendar. The ornaments are so cute and little!

A sneak peak at Mandy's room! Such a cozy room. One of my favorites are the little straw ornaments in the frame.

Even the closet got a little Christmas! As you can see, these are now plant shelves.

Mandy has a lovely snow globe collection and now she has more room to spread them around!

Stay tuned! Tomorrow I will be back with my room decked out!

The Sewing Room Re-Do

I finally have pictures of the new bright and airy Sewing Closet! I am so excited with how it turned out, better then I imagined actually! There are a lot of the same things, but a lot is new.

The biggest difference is a new sewing table! Getting a new table was a big decision for me as my brother had made my old one, but I am so glad I finally decided a change was needed. The old table was just taking up too much space and it wasn't being that useful. To be honest, it collected messiness like crazy!
So, I picked out a basic table from Ikea with just enough room for one sewing machine and the project I am working on. It makes the room look so much bigger!  My goal is to never never leave anything on the table after a project. I am going to try my hardest not to let the mess pile up!

I don't know where the idea for little shelves came from, but one day it popped in my head! A very clear picture of white shelves lined with milk bottles, the sun from the window glinting off them. It took a bit of searching to find just the right shelves, but they are exactly what I pictured!

The back wall is the only blank unoccupied wall. At first I was going to fill it with a couple of pictures, but then I realized two things; the white wall makes a perfect backdrop to photograph finished items and I love seeing that white from my bedroom! I did put two hooks to hang newly finished makes, but when I want to admire the beautiful whiteness, I can just take down the hangers.

Another big change is my "closet" area. I had put up a small rod from the wall to the end of the shelving and it worked perfectly fine. But when Mom suggested putting an old fashioned coat rack there instead, I said, yes indeed!
I love how it has tidied up the corner. It works quite well for me as I only hang blouses and dresses. Most of my dresses (which I don't wear everyday) are in white muslin garment bags which also keeps it calming to the eye.

On of my biggest worries was were to keep my shoes? I had them in a bin tucked under the hanging clothes, but with the coat rack, there is no place to hide them! Then I came up with the idea of muslin bags hung from the end of the shelving. Now they are tidily tucked out of the way and kept free of dust. (I love my basic white hooks! You can find then at any hardware or building store. They are liberally sprinkled about the house.)

This is the little wall to the left of the doorway, just large enough to fit my dresser full of patterns with all my sewing tools on top. Sorry, I didn't get a picture of the entire dresser. It is the same one that I have had though, Here it got a stencil makeover.

I love how this picture really show how big my sewing room is! I can never remember the dimension, though I know I have measured it. A twin bed should be able to fit under the window, so about six and a half feet by six and a half feet? It is amazing what one can do with a bit of space once you put your mind to it!

Now I am ready to sew! A good thing too as this little room feels like it is bursting with fabric!

And this is my "happy" view from the bedroom!

Work in Progress

It was so sunny last weekend I couldn't resist taking a few random pictures. The sunshine just felt so Springy! None of these pictures are tidied up, they were taken right in the moment. As you can see, the sewing closet is a mess.......

In the midst of sewing non stop, there isn't much time left for tiding up. I am planning to refresh the whole room; give it a good cleaning and then rearrange and re-do a bit. All hoping it will help me keep it a bit more tidy. Mostly I need to start some good habits! Maybe a refresh will help gets those habits started. Right now, I am not sure what all I want different, but plans are slowly taking shape. Of course I will be sure to let you know how it goes!

An extra picture of the bright sunny book nook.

Christmas Cards and Snowflakes

I hope you enjoy looking at vintage cards as much as do, because here they are again! I always look forward to pulling them out each year.

This year I went a little simpler and combined the snowflakes and Christmas cards on the clothes line. I picked out cards that featured outdoor snow scenes. I think they compliment each other nicely!

My grandmother's crocheted snowflakes always amaze me! Such detailed work. I never knew how to decorate with such an odd color until I realized it goes perfectly with pink! So glad I figured that out!

I also set a few cards on the tall bookshelf for a dash more color.

Yes, that is a light switch in the middle of the wall. All I can say is it is an old house and that is where it has always been......

Book Nook Footstool (Part 2)

This little project has been patiently waiting in the wings for awhile now. Do you remember my post on Making a Footstool? I did finish, quite awhile ago in fact. But somehow there was always something else to post!

I recently found a frame for the house drawing from my brother-in-law. So excited to get it hung up! Then I finally remembered I hadn't shared my finished footstool.

Originally, I wanted to make a quilted cover for the foot stool. But then decided a quilted pillow and quilted footstool might be too "quilty". So when I was cleaning out my sewing closet and came across two pink dish towels from Ikea and Mom suggested I use them for the book nook stool. I knew I had my answer! I didn't even want to waste the rose trim from one of the towels, so it now covers the seams at the sides!

My favorite place to perch while perusing the shelves for my next read? This stool!

Next to the bedroom doorway above the chair, hangs the house drawing. I am not sure why the frame caught my eye, but I love the simple combination of twine and black metal. And it pairs perfectly with the drawing. (The story behind the house drawing is HERE.)

Bedroom Refresh

Isn't it funny how you can change one thing and suddenly a room feels totally different? This little table is the star of my recent bedroom refresh.

All I did was move the bedside table from the back corner to the other side of the bed. And suddenly, the room is cozier, more interesting and more spacious!

Now the lovely characteristics of the little table can shine!
And the room is extra cozy at night with the light in the middle of the room now.

A present from my sister Becky, this little pot has always had a place on the bedside table. Now you can really notice the details.

The table was another antique find years ago. It actually is a sewing cabinet with the top lifting up to reveal a spool rack. The drawers hold all those random bit and bobs that can accumulate on a bedside table. I love having everything handy, but still able to keep the table top tidy.

The other change I made was to flip my bedspread around, the back is now up and the top down. The top was getting so warn and holey, but I am not ready to give up on it yet!

I also switched out the pillow shams as the they didn't really match the quilt anymore. In their place I have crisp white vintage pillowcases. That just happen to have my monogram!

I love the lacy edging! I suspect it is handmade.

A lovely view reflected back.
Because the table made the doorway to the sewing room seem a bit crowded, I moved the dressing table stool to the bottom of the bed, which opens up the area nicely.

The stool is where I perch my extra pillows at night, so it works perfectly.

I love the new "refreshed" look! With a small bedroom there isn't too many ways to place the furniture, so it was nice to be able to move something, even if it was just the bedside table.....
