Don't Get Benched this Summer!

Summer is here and as Aspen transforms from a winter wonderland to a summer haven many of us may be feeling a bit nervous about getting after it. This yearly cycle brings about new goals and increased awareness as we begin to think about shorts and swimming suits. Unfortunately this can lead to overdoing it at the gym and result in an injury.

Benched

There is nothing more frustrating than an injury. It hurts, it complicates your day, requires trips to the Dr., and it can prevent you from working out and achieving your health goals. Injuries can happen at any time and while some are preventable, most exercise injuries are due to improper form, pushing it too far, or trying something you shouldn’t. We take safety very seriously and as we head into the summer, we want to make sure you are able to enjoy everything Aspen offers.

Get Help

My first advice is always to work with one of our personal trainers. They are experts not only in making you look and feel great, but also in keeping you healthy.  They will work with you to determine your current fitness level, lay out goals and create a plan to get you to where you want to be. Most people that find themselves injured skip this step and just jump in full steam. While I love the intensity, it is extremely important to take a measured approach.

If You Get Hurt

See a doctor if you get injured. Men, see a doctor if you get hurt. Sorry to be repetitive, but I know the running joke is “real men don’t need doctors”, but it’s not funny when you’re watching your friends climb mountains while you sit in the car. Guys take a clue from the women, and be smart. If it is only a minor injury your doctor will tell you which exercises you may continue to do without causing more harm. In fact, with most injuries you can keep working on other areas of your body while you heal, but you need to know what to avoid and be prepared to start slow.

Once again, our trainers also know how to adjust your routines to compensate for any minor injuries you may have. They can work with you to determine if you are using proper form and performing your exercises correctly. I can’t state it enough, working out with an injury can be very dangerous, please let us know if you have any concerns.

Start Slow to Go Fast

My best advice as you prepare for your awesome summer wardrobe is to start slow and work out consistently. You may notice some sore muscles at first, but you can take care of those with a massage after your workout. As you grow stronger and healthier you will naturally increase intensity and will soon start seeing your summer body appear. So be careful, have fun and welcome to summer!
