TRAVEL LATEST - BOOKINGS TO GREECE SURGE AS BRITISH HOLIDAYMAKERS FLEE SPAIN

The Telegraph 1 August 2020 - by Annabel Fenwick-Elliott

British holidaymakers are flocking to Greece in lieu of Spain as the busiest month for summer holidays gets underway.

The chairman of Sunvil Holiday Group, Noel Josephides has reported a sudden rise in enquiries for 'last-minute, flight-only' bookings to Greece, and not from the company's usual 50-plus demographic. “We know they are people who were likely to go to Spain,” he told iNews.

It comes as Europe's largest tour operator Tui extended the cancellation of all UK holidays to the Spanish Balearic Islands and Canary Islands until August 10 and all holidays to mainland Spain until August 17. Jet2 has also been contacting customers already on holiday there and requesting they fly home earlier; sending empty planes to repatriate them.

Both operators have added extra added services to Greece in order to meet demand.

Greece has fared well through the pandemic compared to the rest of Europe, with only 3.7 new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 14 days. The UK has registered 14 per 100,000 over the same period.

Elsewhere, senior ministers in France and Germany have both warned of possible new lockdowns, and Matt Hancock has said it is "quite likely" that further countries will be dropped from the FCO's quarantine-exempt list as fears of a second wave grips Europe.

Jet2 'will refund customers returning early from Spain'

Jet2 will refund customers on holiday in Spain who have been asked to return to the UK early, it has been reported.

The airline on Thursday cancelled flights to the UK for hundreds of passengers. But today Jet2 told the BBC that it is operating empty flights to pick up passengers from Spain until August 3. The airline will also refund unused nights for customers forced to come back early by the flight cancellations.

Jet2 said it was "responding to a very fast-moving situation with updates coming from the Government with little or no notice, and we have had to make decisions about our programme accordingly".

"We can assure these customers that we will be in touch with them to resolve any issues that they may have," the airline added.

EVOLENE, Switzerland (Reuters) - A section of the Alps turned amber on Friday night in a massive pyrotechnic display as Switzerland marked its national day with an event suited to COVID-19 and social distancing rules.

The mountain chains of Veisivi and Dent de Perroc, which tower nearly 4,000 metres (13,000 feet)in the southern canton of Wallis, saw more than 100 kg (220 lbs) of magnesium powder ignited in the event.

Although Swiss National Day is on Aug. 1, many people celebrate the night before. The date marks the foundation of Switzerland in 1291.

The show, which illuminated 12 square km (4.6 square miles) of the mountains, was visible from 20 km (12 miles) away.

"It is like 100 million candles being lit on the mountains and gives them a lovely warm glow," said organiser Jacques Morard, who runs Jimagine, an events company in Montreux.

"Lots of people around Switzerland normally have fireworks to celebrate our national day, but they weren't able to this year because of distancing regulations."

Gatherings of more than 1,000 people are currently banned to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Thousands of spectators gathered in the Evolene valley below to see the three-minute long display, at a safe distance from each other.

The show followed a similar display in 2015, when magnesium powder was used to turn mountains red for the anniversary of Wallis joining Switzerland, an event also organised by Morard.

Morard, 62, said many events he was organising this year had to be cancelled because of COVID-19.

"As a Swiss person I am very proud to have an idea which works to mark our national day, and bring some joy even in this terrible situation," Morard added.

HONG KONG TURNS EXHIBITION CENTRE INTO MAKESHIFT HOSPITAL AMID NEW WAVE

Hong Kong opened a temporary field hospital with 500 beds on Saturday to house stable Covid-19 patients as the city battles a new wave of virus infections.

The financial hub had been a poster child for tackling coronavirus, with local transmissions all but ended by early summer.

But since July the pathogen has returned, with some cases brought in by the tens of thousands of people who were exempted from a mandatory quarantine imposed on most arrivals.

The opening of the hospital comes a day after city leader Carrie Lam announced the postponement of upcoming legislative elections for a year, saying that the decision is purely protecting public health and has "nothing to do with politics".

More than 2,000 new infections have been detected since the start of July - 60 per cent of the total since the virus first hit the city in late January.

The new makeshift hospital set up at the city's AsiaWorld-Expo exhibition centre near the airport will take in Covid-19 patients aged from 18 to 60.

"Our goal is to triage the patients from the community and provide them with appropriate treatment and hospitalisation arrangement," Dr Larry Lee from the Hospital Authority told media, adding that around 20 to 30 patients are expected to be admitted on the first day.

Dr Lee said that arriving patients will go through X-rays as well as blood, saliva and heart tests.

If found unstable, patients will be sent to hospitals while stable ones will get treatment and put under medical observation at the facility.

New daily infections have been above 100 for the past 10 days with total infection numbers rising to 3,272 on Friday. The death toll rose from seven to 29 in July.

China has offered to send mainland testing staff to the city to carry out "large-scale nucleic acid testing".

In a statement on Saturday, the National Health Commission of China said it had set up a team comprised of 60 clinical laboratory staff, and an "advance unit" would arrive in the city on Sunday.

CORONAVIRUS - SCIENTIFIC ADVISOR SUGGESTS PEOPLE FORM BUBBLES

Cyprus Mail 1 August 2020 - by Andria Kades

One of the government’s health experts on handling the coronavirus, suggested on Saturday that people create social bubbles so as to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Dr Constantinos Tsioutis, assistant professor of internal medicine, infection prevention and control at the European University said people should limit their social interactions to people that belong to this bubble.

This could include family members, people they live with, colleagues at work or clients they have to regularly deal with and people that they regularly interact with.

“If a large amount of the population creates social bubbles, then we limit the spread of the virus, while contact tracing will be much easier.”

Tsioutis suggested people stick to this circle of people as much as possible and not interact with people outside of the bubble for a period of time.

This model could work in Cyprus he said, because there is limited exposure to crowded indoor spaces, close family ties, small distances, small networks, limited areas with superspreading conditions and limited use of public transport.

“Let’s all try to have a specific number of people from 10 to 20 that we have close contact with.”

Keeping these people in our social bubble “limits the risk of us getting the virus from someone else and at the same time, if we have the virus, we limit the chance of spreading it to a large number of people.”

The wider someone’s social circle due to their family, work and daily interactions, then their interaction with other people increases the likelihood of spreading or getting the virus, he added.

Tsioutis said that this idea would not be feasible for people working in customer service for instance, people who travel or those working in places with many employees.

Some countries have proposed the social circle should comprise of no more than 10 people. Other countries have had even fewer but this depends on the individual and the epidemiological situation of the country.

He stressed the need to implement individual safety measures, adding that the use of a mask is complementary because it does not replace the measures that need to continue being implemented.

NASA ASTRONAUTS RIDING SPACEX CAPSULE POISED FOR WEEKEND RETURN

in-cyprus 1 August 2020 - by Annie Charalambous

The two NASA astronauts who rode to the International Space Station aboard SpaceX’s new Crew Drago are due to return on Sunday after a nearly four-month voyage that marked NASA’s first crewed mission from home soil in nine years.

U.S. astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, who launched to the space station in May, are expected to board Crew Dragon around 5:30 p.m. ET and splash down at one of seven landing sites in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean at about 2:48 p.m. ET on Sunday.

NASA and SpaceX are monitoring the path of Hurricane Isaias, a category 1 cyclone approaching Florida’s east coast that could force officials to postpone the homecoming into next week. “We have plenty of opportunities here in August and we’re in no hurry to come home,” NASA’s commercial crew manager Steve Stich said, adding the next return opportunity opens on Monday should Isaias force a delay.

Stich said Crew Dragon, an acorn-shaped pod that can seat up to seven astronauts, has been in a “very healthy” condition since docking on May 31 to the space station, where astronauts have been conducting tests and monitoring how the spacecraft performs over time in space.

Upon a successful splashdown, the spacecraft will have completed its final key test to prove it can transport astronauts to and from space — a task SpaceX has accomplished dozens of times with its cargo-only capsule but never before with humans aboard.

“The water landing portion of it is pretty challenging from a physiological standpoint, just after coming back from being in microgravity,” Hurley, a veteran of two shuttle missions, told reporters in a phone briefing on Friday.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX became the first private company to send humans to orbit in May with the launch of Behnken and Hurley, who will have spent more than two months on the space station upon returning.

The mission marked the first time NASA launched humans from U.S. soil since its shuttle program retired in 2011. Since then the United States has relied on Russia’s space program to launch its astronauts to the space station.

Hoping to galvanize a commercial space marketplace, NASA awarded nearly $8 billion to SpaceX and Boeing Co collectively in 2014 to develop dueling space capsules, experimenting with a contract model that allows the space agency to buy astronaut seats from the two companies.
