NOCTURNAL BALLADS - Pattihio Municipal Theatre, Limassol - 28 September

NOCTURNAL BALLADS

Pattihio Municipal Theatre, Limassol

Monday 28 September - 2030

With the intention to create a concert program out of most famous encore pieces for violin, Cyprus based violinist Sorin Alexandru Horlea started a long process of selection. His search became ultimately a quest for deepest expression of the strongest human emotions – of love and loss. The pieces that followed were all set in the nocturnal mood expressing love and loss of the romantic nature, one’s country or nation, and faith in a possible salvation through both.  The Nocturnal Ballads were born…

With the pianist Anita Tomasevich they have recorded a CD “Nocturnal Ballads” portraying the conversations with one’s self in the solitude of the nocturnal nights.  Selected poems will be recited live on stage with the theatrical influences to accompany the music.

Sorin Alexandru Horlea – violin

Anita Tomasevich – piano

Works by: Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Kreisler, Faure, Debussy, among others

Narration: Marily Milia

CYPRUS YESTERDAY AND TODAY - En Plo Gallery, Paphos - 7-20 September

Cyprus Mail 2 September 2020 - by Eleni Philippou

A new Paphos exhibition titled Cyprus Yesterday and Today enters a retrospective journey, looking back into the world and Cyprus through landmarks that have defined and continue to define a turbulent course full of expectations, disappointments, missed opportunities and the hope for something better.

The exhibition, opening on Monday, focuses on art prints and photography and through them, takes a look into the past, chronicling Cypriot periods. Engraving during a time when cameras were absent, was the main source of imaging that approached or even embellished reality. Engraved pieces such as those of the Illustrated London News and the Graphic edition of 1878 offered viewers a different perspective. One through the eyes of foreigners presenting images of the time, and capturing the feeling of excitement and euphoria of the Greek Cypriots at the island’s takeover by the British, which later turned to rage when their expectations were dashed. Prints depicting this and much more will be present at the exhibition.

Achilleas The Shoe Repairer Oil On Canvas 100x120cm 2When it comes to photography, it’s an art that gives an accurate picture of landscapes, ancient monuments, religious sites and daily life. And so, the exhibition’s photographs act as a flashback into the Cyprus of Yesterday.

“Art in general transports life together with the manners and customs of the people of each period, filtered through the personal experiences and emotions of the artists,” say exhibition organisers. Taking place at En Plo Gallery opposite Paphos Castle, art prints and photographs aim to take viewers on a journey looking back at the Cyprus of yesterday and the Cyprus of today.

The very popular pianist Tatiana Stupak will play a few classical music solo works – some old and very well-known, and one or two very new pieces, but in old traditional styles and for the majority of the concert, she will accompany two very talented musicians, in mostly 20th century music. Soprano Ekaterina Savva will sing well-known songs from musicals and films, and arias from popular operas. The composers are expected to include Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini and Franz Lehár. Stupak will also accompany the saxophonist Katerina Parpouna, who will play music in several styles, including tango music by Astor Piazzolla, and Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Ekaterina Savva and Katerina Parpouna are both teachers at the Tatiana Stupak School of Music, in Limassol.

Tatiana Stupak (piano) started learning the piano at age five, studying at the Special School of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg, and after that, for a further five years, continuing at the Conservatory itself. The winner of international music competitions including the Leipzig Bach competition. Tatiana is very well known in Cyprus, having played piano at more than 80 events in the last few years, both as a solo pianist and accompanying other musicians. Since 2018, she has played piano solos at The Big Choir Project concerts. She arranges charity concerts for children and for the church, and brings famous musicians from Russia, for example from the Bolshoi Theatre. She opened the Tatiana Stupak School of Music in 2018, where students can enter for examinations set by the Royal Schools of Music and by Trinity College. Students may also take part in public concerts, to gain experience in performing before audiences. In 2018, Tatiana won awards on being chosen in competition, as Russian Cultural Woman of the Year in Cyprus. In the summer of 2019, having organised fund-raising concerts on several occasions for the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, she was invited to play piano solos at a concert at the Presidential Palace, where President Anastasiades presented her with an award on behalf of the Institute. She has been interviewed many times on Cyprus radio and TV channels. Early in 2020 she was interviewed on the subject of children and music, and the interview was shown on Smile TV; previously she appeared live on TV ONE’s charity show, DanSing for You, not as a pianist, but as a dancer. Most recently, she was interviewed by RIK1 TV, and the interview was broadcast in July 2020.  Also, during 2020, over a period of a few weeks, she made live broadcasts on the Internet, giving illustrated talks about ten classical music composers. Tatiana maintains two YouTube channels: one for herself, and another for her music school.

Ekaterina Savva (soprano) graduated from the Mozarteum Unversity in Salzburg, having specialised in opera singing.  She also had a scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has taken performed in many Theatres and festivals, including the Salzburg State Theatre, the Salzburger Festspiele, the Rialto and Markideio theatres in Cyprus. She has taken part in masterclasses, including with Barbara Bonney, Alessandro Misciasci, Mario Antonio Diaz Varas, Helene Schneiderman. Her soprano rôles are not limited to operatic arias – for example she sings songs from well-known musical shows.

Katerina Parpouna (saxophone) first studied music in Limassol, and then from 2015-2019 at the HKU Utrecht’s Conservatorium in Utrecht, Netherlands, where she obtained her Bachelor of Music degree, specialising in classical saxophone performance. Then she moved to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands, where she took a Pre-Masters Course in Music and Classical Saxophone Performance in 2019-2020. During her studies in the Netherlands, she taught saxophone to children and adults. She also performed in numerous concerts and recitals, and took part in many masterclasses. And in the same period, she competed in music competitions at the European Saxophone Forum, in Wroclaw, Poland, and in the Franz Cibulka Competition in Graz, Austria. She continues to teach saxophone and play in concerts, since returning from the Netherlands to Cyprus.

Dickens’s masterpiece is an adventurous story of coming-of-age, driven by an absolute love which reveals the essence of true self through a painful path.
