A Discerning Critic of Holmes on Film

“No Sherlockian library is complete without at least one book on the films of Sherlock Holmes,” Steven Doyle writes in Sherlock Holmes for Dummies.

Well, I had at least one. Now I have three more. I bought them from Don Curtis at a mini-auction during the most recent meeting of the Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis.

I decided to work my way through the trio starting with Sherlock Holmes on the Screen, by Alan Barnes. It’s “a real cracker,” as my British friend Roger Johnson might say.

The book covers both movies and TV shows – English-speaking and otherwise. It presents them in alphabetical order rather than chronological, with a chronology at the end. This approach has a lot of merit, but Barnes’s pedantic approach to titles does not. The first Basil Rathbone – Nigel Bruce movie shows up under the “S’s” because it’s official full title is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Therefore, all the many Hounds covered in the book aren’t considered together. Too bad, that.

In most cases, Barnes considers the plots in three sections: “The Mystery,” “The Investigation,” and “The Solution.” That’s a neat idea in theory, but rather arbitrary in practice.

The great strength of this book is the author’s strong opinions, which are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Here he is on Patrick Macnee as Holmes in 1993’s The Hound of London:

“Macnee was merely bad as Roger Moore’s Watson in Sherlock Holmes in New York, and only terrible as Christopher Lee’s sidekick in Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady and Incident at Victoria Falls – but he makes a truly dreadful Holmes, wheezing out every line while resembling nothing less than an unshelled tortoise poured into a monkey suit.”

Wow!

Many of his comments are more balanced, as when he differentiates the best episodes of the 1950’s Ronald Howard TV series from the worst.

Surprisingly, Barnes finds “a certain gauche charm” in Sherlock Holmes in New York. He also defends Nigel Bruce as the perfect Watson for Rathbone. Their Hound, he says, “would be blissful even without such a fine detective/doctor team. The fact of that team’s presence makes it quite probably the only Sherlock Holmes film that can hold its head among the true classics of the cinema.”

That sounds about right to me.

Not : Şampuanı iyice duruladığınızdan emin olmadan duşu sonlandırmamanız da kepek problemini önlemede oldukça etkilidir.

BRIT EXPATS INCREDULOUS OVER UK REPORTS OF TERRIFIED TOURISTS

From Cyprus Mail - article by Bejay Browne 16 April 2018

British expat residents, tourists and officials in Paphos launched scathing attacks on the tabloid British media on Monday after ‘scaremongering’ reports in sections of the press that tourists were fleeing the island in fear of their lives and that others were cancelling their holidays.
“This is utter nonsense and there is no need to panic,” said local resident David Patrick in response to a headline in Monday’s Daily Star: ‘Brits in holiday hotspot ready to FLEE amid fears of WW3 following Syria airstrikes.’
“We are perfectly safe and this is irresponsible reporting in this type of media. Cyprus is a fantastic place to live and to holiday, and no-one should cancel their holiday here,” he said. “We are not on any sort of alert and daily life on this glorious island goes on as always.”

The tabloid press reports follow Saturday’s use of jets from the British base at Akrotiri to launch air strikes on Syrian targets.
Cyprus was only made aware of this move after the strike, according to the government spokesman, Prodromos Prodromou, who said that British Prime Minister, Teresa May, called President Nicos Anastasiades to brief him on the military action in Syria and to reassure him that there was no question of any danger to Cyprus. She also said that there was limited use of the British base.
British expat resident and Tala village councillor, Cathi Delaney also sought to allay fears of any response from Russia which is an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad whose alleged use of chemical weapons prompted the air strikes.
“I don’t think residents need to be concerned, the Cyprus government has one foot in Russia and one in the bases, and it’s highly unlikely that there will be any repercussions against us here,” she said.
She added that there is also a large Russian expat population in Cyprus.
Karen Sampson has lived in Paphos for the last 18 years with her family and is incredulous over the scare tactics being used in some of the British press.
“These types of incorrect reports are scaring people for no reason and similar posts on social media aren’t helping either. I feel perfectly safe here and under no threat at all. A friend contacted me to see if it is ‘safe’ to come in October and I reassured him straight away.”
Holidaymakers Bob and Janet Adams from Torquay are currently on a week’s holiday in Paphos and said: “We mustn’t let this affect tourism, Cyprus is a safe place to live, work and visit and is not involved in the current situation. People are mad to cancel their trips, nothing has changed.”
Retiree John Yates has lived in Cyprus for 13 years and said that holidaying Brits are more likely to experience problems at home.
“It is more likely to be caught up in a terrorist attack or some form of crime in Britain or any other European country than the likelihood of Russia attacking Cyprus. The British bases are sovereign territory and so Cyprus can’t be blamed for these bombing raids, it’s nothing to do with them.”
Four Royal Air Force Tornado jets from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus fired Storm Shadow missiles during the early hours of Saturday at a military facility near Homs where it was assessed that Syria had stockpiled chemicals, according to Britain’s ministry of defence.

CYPRUS PROPERTY REVALUATIONS UNDERWAY

From Cyprus Property News - article dated 12 April 2018

Cyprus properties are being revalued by the Department of Lands and Surveys to reflect their 2018 values; the revaluation exercise was announced by DLS Director Andreas Sokratous earlier today. By: Nigel Howarth Published: Thursday 12th April 2018 •

THE VALUES of around 2 million Cyprus properties are being updated by the Department of Lands & Surveys to reflect their 2018 market values.

According to media reports the Director of the Department of Lands and Surveys, Andreas Sokratous, made the announcement on ANT1’s midday show earlier today.

The revised 2018 valuations will be based on a property’s market price. In 1980 and 2013 properties were assigned a general price, which did not represent the real value of the property.

Mr Sokratous said that “the primary objective is to use the new property values, to levy municipal and community fees on immovable property.

“A great deal is being done to complete the process by the end of the year.

“The new property valuations are being carried out on the right terms and with the right criteria to get their real values as close as possible.”

Regular readers will recall the furore that followed the last property revaluation exercise in 2013 with former Interior Minister Hasikos admitting that mistakes were made.

By October 2014 the Department of Lands and Surveys had received more than 4,600 objections while a further 7,000 or so objections had been received by the Citizens Service Centres. MPs reported receiving hundreds of complaints.

So great was the number of objections, the deadline for their submission was extended by four months.

Market values

It is perfectly possible for two properties with an identical external appearance to have different market values.

When assessing a market value factors such as the age of the property, its internal condition and decorative order, the quality of its fixtures and fittings, whether it is freehold or leasehold, whether it has statutory tenants, its proximity to local schools and amenities, service charges, etc. are also taken into account.

Typically market valuations are assessed by a suitably qualified property valuer, such as a RICS Chartered Property Valuer. Hopefully the DLS’ 2018 valuations will be a little closer to reality.
