Women in History: Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a Polish-born physicist and chemist and one of the most famous scientists of her time. Together with her husband Pierre, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903, and she went on to win another in 1911.

Early Life:

Marie Curie was born in Warsaw in modern-day Poland on Nov. 7, 1867. Her parents were borth teachers, and she was the youngest of five children. As a child Curie took after her father, Ladislas, a math and physics instructor. She had a bright and curious mind and excelled at school. But tragedy struck early, and when she was only 11, Curie lost her mother, Bronsitwa, to tuberculosis.

A top student in her secondary school, Curie could not attend the men-only University of Warsaw. She instead continued her education in Warsaw's "floating university," a set of underground, informal classes held in secret. Both Curie and her sister Bronya dreamed of going abroad to earn an official degree, but they lacked the financial resources to pay for more schooling. Undeterred, Curie worked out a deal with her sister. She would work to support Bronya while she was in school and Bronya would return the favor after she completed her studies.

For roughly five years, Curie worked as a tutor and a governess. She used her spare time to study, reading about physics, chemistry and math. In 1891, Curie finally made her way to Paris where she enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris. She threw herself into her studies, but this dedication had a personal cost. With little money, Curie survived on buttered bread and tea, and her health sometimes suffered because of her poor diet.

Curie completed her master's degree in physics in 1893 and earned another degree in mathematics the following year. Around this time, she received a commission to do a study on different types of steel and their magnetic properties. Curie needed a lab to work in, and a colleague introduced her to French physicist Pierre Curie. A romance developed between the brilliant pair, and they became a scientific dynamic duo.

Scientific research:

The Curies worked together investigating radioactivity, building on the work of the German physicist Roentgen and the French physicist Becquerel. In July 1898, the Curies announced the discovery of a new chemical element, polonium. At the end of the year, they announced the discovery of another, radium. The Curies, along with Becquerel, were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.

Pierre, Irene and Marie Curie
Pierre's life was cut short in 1906 when he was knocked down and killed by a carriage. Marie took over his teaching post, becoming the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne, and devoted herself to continuing the work that they had begun together. She received a second Nobel Prize, for Chemistry, in 1911.

The Curie's research was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery. During World War One Curie helped to equip ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she herself drove to the front lines. The International Red Cross made her head of its radiological service and she held training courses for medical orderlies and doctors in the new techniques.

Despite her success, Marie continued to face great opposition from male scientists in France, and she never received significant financial benefits from her work. By the late 1920s her health was beginning to deteriorate. She died on 4 July 1934 from leukaemia, caused by exposure to high-energy radiation from her research. The Curies' eldest daughter Irene was herself a scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry

Russia Attacks Japanese Manchuria. August 1945

Lesser known about WW2 is that the Russians too attacked the Japanese. On August 9, 1945.  Two days after the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It was called Operation "August Storm".

The Soviet invasion of Manchuria began on 8 August 1945, with the Soviet invasion of the Japanese puppet states of Manchukuo and neighbouring Mengjiang; the greater offensive would eventually include northern Korea, southern Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. It marked the initial and only military action of the Soviet Union against the Empire of Japan; at the Yalta Conference, it had agreed to Allied pleas to terminate the neutrality pact with Japan and enter the Second World War's Pacific theatre within three months after the end of the war in Europe.

The Soviet Union had earlier in 1939 defeated the Japanese Army decisively at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol under the command of Zhukov. That was the reason that Japan did not attack Russia in 1941 and instead moved south into Asia. Otherwise Russia would have been squeezed between the Nazi Germans from the west and Japanese Army from the east. But that is another story.....

--------------------
Note handed to Naotake Sato, Japanese Ambassador to the USSR, by Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov in Moscow, on August 8, 1945:

After the defeat and capitulation of Hitlerite Germany, Japan remained the only great power which still stands for the continuation of the war.

The demand of the three powers , the United States, Great Britain and China, of July 26 for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces was rejected by Japan. Thus the proposal made by the Japanese Government to the Soviet Union for mediation in the Far East has lost all foundation.

Taking into account the refusal of Japan to capitulate, the Allies approached the Soviet Government with a proposal to join the war against Japanese aggression and thus shorten the duration of the war, reduce the number of casualties and contribute toward the most speedy restoration of peace.

True to its obligation as an Ally, the Soviet Government has accepted the proposal of the Allies, and has joined in the declaration of the Allied powers of July 26.

The Soviet Government considers that this policy is the only means able to bring peace nearer, to free the people from further sacrifice and suffering and to give the Japanese people the opportunity of avoiding the danger of destruction suffered by Germany after her refusal to accept unconditional surrender.

In view of the above, the Soviet Government declares that from tomorrow, that is from August 9, the Soviet Union will consider herself in a state of war against Japan.

The Americans had feared that there would be a bloodbath if it sent its troops to invade the Japanese mainland; so they tried to convince Stalin that Russia too should attack Japan. At the Potsdam Conference he readily agreed. Stalin had ambitions in the Far east too. He agreed to do so three months after Germany was defeated. For Russia it was a sweet victory after the Red Army rolled into Manchuria, Port Arthur and Sakhalin Islands in 1945. It had lost Port Arthur after a humiliating defeat at the hands of Japan in 1904-5

Many Japanese had moved to Manchuria in early 1945 to avoid the advancing Allied troops. They believed Manchuria would be safer than mainland Japan. How wrong they were!

The Japanese army though about a million strong in Manchuria consisted of newly drafted soldiers; the elite were sent to defend the mainland. It was also short of arms and warplanes. In contrast the Russians threw in their best soldiers battle-hardened in the war against Germany. The Soviet war machine was slick and efficient sharpened in the Ostfront.

The Red Army men true to their tradition raped even in Manchuria. Especially men from Rokossovsky's Army. A Chinese man said disgustedly, "We thought the Russians were our allies and friends."

Many Japanese women in Manchuria were raped during and after World War II. Japanese women in Manchuria found life difficult after Soviet troops entered Manchuria near the end of the war. Many of those women were used as "dolls" -- sexual objects. There are many accounts of several Japanese women who were raped or almost raped. In one account, a young girl threw herself out a three-story window to avoid being raped by Soviet troops. Another account demonstrated how not only Soviet troops but also Chinese civilians tried to rape Japanese women. A Chinese man came to a woman's house and asked her to give him her two daughters because his daughters were raped by Japanese soldiers. The woman offered herself instead, but the man changed his mind. Japanese men offered some Japanese women as female Kamikaze troops to Soviet troops to protect their community and other Japanese women and children. Once women were raped, they were no longer part of their community and were often rejected by their husbands.

Looks like the marriage track has worked in the favour of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon as the show has made its way back into the TRP charts this week scoring 3.0 from a 2.4 last week. The show has been struggling in the last few months to keep up with its ratings but the marriage and romance seems to have done the trick.

KBC surprisingly hasnt shown very favourable numbers this season despite its connect with the common man theme.

This week marks the ending of three shows Parichay, Chhal Seh aur Maath and Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha on Colors as Big Boss Season 6 is all set to hit the screens from 6th October onwards.

We willl be back next week with the changes and ups and downs in the TV Land. Until then enjoy the shows and do not forget to watch them on TV, during the Telecast time if you are in India if you want your favourite shows to do well.

We have decided to collect proof against Shyamji - Khushi

Preview

Finally our wedding took place and I must say that I am relieved. But recently Arnavji and I found out that some video cameras were hidden in our room. This has upset us a lot and we have no doubt that Shyamji is behind all of this.

After Anjali di’s miscarriage, I genuinely thought that Shyamji was sorry for all that he had done. Anjali di’s health was deteriorating and she wanted Shyamji to be by her side. Hence I helped him in coming back to the Raizada house. But Arnavji refused to trust him and after our wedding, we found the hidden cameras in our room.

Our doubts were cleared when we checked Shyamji’s laptop and found the footage from our room and even from di’s godh barai. We are almost sure that Shyamji was responsible for di’s miscarriage. Arnavji is angry and does not want Shyamji to stay in the house anymore but I have told him that we first need to collect strong proof against Shyamji, only then we can get di to see his true colours.

Although I am very happy about Arnavji and my marriage, I am sad that di and the entire family will once again undergo pain due to Shyamji’s terrible ways. But now it is high time, that Shyamji’s truth comes out in the open and for this we need strong proof that he is behind all the misfortune our family has faced.

I only hope that di will accept the reality and face it strongly. Arnavji, I and the entire family will give her our full support to deal with everything. I know that Arnavji will take care of everything; I have full faith in him. We will make a plan to trap Shyamji and I hope that we succeed.

Episode Analysis and Symbolism - 03rd October 2012

Preview

Hello readers..

Namaste, Aadab, Satriyaakal and welcome to this week’s first episode Analysis and Symbolism. When so much is happening in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, when things are going pretty much eventful.. what better show than IPKKND to start off with..

I am sure like me even the viewers are liking the new track “Expose Shyaam” not just because the creep will get exposed but because Khushi and Arnav are in it together. During the marriage one phera stats how the two would be together, support each other in happiness and crisis, and this was a crisis a huge one and had to be exposed ASAP. The only thing stopping Arnav from thrashing Shyaam black and blue was his sister.

They have a common enemy, his intentions, his moves always have a certain uncertainty about them, and this was making things worse. Shyaam was clever, to outsmart him Arnav and Khushi needed to be smarter, but when these two have combined forces the result is obvious, but what would be worth seeing is how they execute it. I am sure it will not be Khuhsi’s plan that succeeds in exposing Shyaam, but a plan that’s the brainchild of both Arnav and Khushi.

We need not be upset with Anjali being used in this track, because she is just instrumental in making ArShi come closer. So for now the plan is set in motion.. But let’s not forget the opponent is a well experienced player.. Shyaam is no fool to not see the things that were happening around him, this necessarily does not mean that he would understand things as soon as he sees them or perceives them, but over a certain time he will understand that a game is being played against him, and this is where Arnav’s contribution will come in handy. The way Arnav kept telling Khushi that this plan will not work is what gave me this idea that it’s going to take both their brains and information about Shyaam to expose him in front of the Raizada, to rip of the blindfold that was tied around Anjali’s eyes.

Mami confesses that she was the one who put holes in the Saree when Khushi came to meet the Raizada’s for the first time, so I guess that’s a loop closure. NK as usual came handy at the right time, because it’s his method of getting Maani to confess the truth that give Khushi an insight on how to trap Shyaam.. The CV’s must use NK in the plan with Arnav and Khushi, it would be a treat to the eyes to see these 3 trap Shyaam in his own web of deceits.

Character consistency was well maintained.. Arnav once again proved that he was intelligent to read things, to connect the dots and also get impulsive. Khushi never hesitates to seek forgiveness for something wrong done by her, which in this case was getting Shyaam back to Shantivan against Arnav’s wishes. Overall it was a filler episode, one to shoulder tomorrows set of events I guess, something was a miss, but on the whole it was entertaining.

Symbolism:

The biggest symbolism in today’s episode was ArShi’s togetherness, it showed how together they could withstand or surpass any crisis.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon [Episode 356] 3rd October 2012 Written Update

Preview

The episode begins with Khushi and Arnav's scene from last night's episode. Shyaam opens the door and it's empty. Shyaam picks up his laptop and is about to open the lid when NK comes and pushes him to go downstairs. Shyaam budges again and again, but NK doesn't let him go. Arnav and Khushi come out from behind the wardrobe.

Khushi goes to Anjali and tells her about the oil that will help her feet heal. She starts massaging and Mami sits in the other corner insulting Khushi. Arnav stands close by to see what Khushi's doing. Anjali teases Arnav and Khushi while Khushi sees the wounds from when Anjali had a miscarriage. Khushi is shocked whereas Arnav is super angry.

Arnav is walking back and forth outside the house and he is angry wanting to kill Shyaam for harming his sister. He says that it was not a miscarriage but a murder. Khushi apologizes for bringing him back in the house and says that she didn't know that he was still the same Shyaam. Arnav is about to walk away when Khushi tells him that he needs to calm down and think before he does anything irrational. Khushi tells Arnav that they need to make sure that Anjali's blind trust over Shyaam is broken. Arnav suddenly thinks of the dhol wala's and says that they might know of something that could help them.

Mami is shown sleeping and NK tries waking her up. Nani tells NK that this is Manorama's sleeping time because she had told her to make food. NK says then why did Manorama mock Khushi? Nani says that mocking and sleeping is something Manorama loves doing but she is very sweet in the heart and that she will never accept her fault. NK says that yes, she will accept her fault. The two just look on.

Arnav and Khushi are sitting at the JB Music Equipments. Arnav asks the manager to see all the men that had come in the RM the day of their Sangeet. The manager tells them that only one wasn't there because he had been hurt so he was replaced by a temporary placement. Khushi asks for a description of him. The manager explains him exactly the way Arnav remembered Shyaam.

Anjali and Nani are shown doing Pooja. NK pretends to be Devi Mayya and starts talking to Manorama and tells her to wake up and not ask questions. Mami is shocked. NK asks Mami to accept all her "paaap"  Manorama says that she will tell her in private or in email. NK yells NO, and to speak right away.  Manorama starts confessing and says that she doesn't like to work that's why she sits in the Mandir so no one can say anything to her. She then says that she had mixed a little bit of wine in Bua's drink at Payal's wedding so that she would lose the competition. Nani is surprised and Mami continues to say that she had to do this to win the compeition. Arnav and Khushi walk in just then. Manorama then confesses to have being the one behind the whole fiasco with sareees that were brought in the first time and Manorama had put holes in them. NK says that Manorama should be the "Phatti saree" then. Khushi and Arnav smile. NK comes out from behind and Manorama is shocked. She gets embarrassed and walks away. Khushi asks why NK did this? To which he says that he wanted to make sure she confesses everything and this is the best way to make her confess to everything.

Arnav and Khushi are outside the house again where Khushi tells Arnav that she has a plan and she talks but we can't hear it at all. Arnav says that it won't work. Khushi says that if he has another way then they could use that but it won't be of no help and Shyaam might just confess his deeds.

It's the next morning. Everyone is at the table having a fun time. HP walks in and says that the painters are here to look at the house. Shyaam is shocked. Arnav just notices the expression on Shyaam's face. Nani asks why the sudden paint of the house to which Arnav says that it has been a long time and he thought of getting it done before Diwali. Shyaam suddenly says that he has some urgent work and has to get it done right away. He walks away. Khushi and Arnav just look at each other. Anjali mutters that Shyaam and his work.

Shyaam walks in his room, and he is frustrated. He says that he will have to remove the cameras for a few days so that they aren't caught by the painters. He then says that he will find another way of keeping a close eye on Arnav and Khushi. He walks into Arnav's room and is about to take the camera off when Arnav enters the room. Shyaam hides. Arnav picks up a file and walks away. Shyaam heaves a sigh of relief.

Shyaam is shown taking off all the cameras from Arnav and Khushi's room especially the pool side.  Arnav walks to where Khushi is standing and just nods.

Arnav tells Khushi that the cameras are gone. They are in their room. Khushi says that thank God the cameras are gone, and now they can do whatever they want. Arnav smirks and starts walking towards her. Instead of doing anything to Khushi, he just bends and picks up his phone. He then asks Khushi what she had in mind.  Khushi say nothing and she is about to walk away when Arnav pulls her to himself and says that did she think he was going to do something else. Khushi shakes her head and says that she was thinking what their next plan would be. Realization hits Arnav and he moves away and says that this plan won't work. Khushi says what if it works? Arnav says that she doesn't know Shyaam. Khushi says that she does and that why does Arnav always think negative. She huffs, crosses her arms and looks angry. Episode ends right there on Khushi's face.

Precap:

Shyaam is shaving in his room and he picks the razor up, puts it on his face and it cuts him. He then checks it with his finger and that cuts too. He looks closely and there's a piece of glass in it. He wonders how is it possible.
