History of Medicine - Duchenne de Boulogne

The history of science fascinates me for many reasons. The most signficant being that it is a brazen example of the cumulative efforts of men and women separated by time & space but united through their ideas. Perhaps it is best described by the saying Isaac Newton popularised; "to be standing on the shoulders of giants". Today, I would like to briefly look at the history of neurology and see how (and why) many eponymous diseases and signs have obtained their names.
Duchenne de Boulogne

We start with Duchenne de Boulogne, a French neurologist in the 1800s, whose understanding of electrophysiology, neural pathways, diagnostic techniques have arguably made him a father of the speciality and one of the 19th century's original clinicians.

Born in Calais in 1805, he studied medicine in Paris and became a physician in 1831. At Paris, he was taught by the likes of Cruveilhier, Dupuytren, Velpeau, and Laennec (inventor of the stethoscope). He remained in Calais as a practitioner of general medicine until his wife died of puerperal fever in 1844. He returned to Paris to initiate his pioneering studies on electrical stimulation of muscles.

He pioneered the use of deep tissue biopsy using a trochar he constructed, and described an array of myopathies that bear his name today. This includes Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, Erb-Duchenne palsy amongst others.

Interestingly, he published a monographic album of the muscles involved in human expressions (see adjacent photo). This album would later serve as a resource for a young Charles Darwin in his own study on the genetics of behaviour.

Duchenne (right) and his patient, an "old toothless man, with a thin face, whose features, without being absolutely ugly, approached ordinary triviality".
Over the course of his career, he worked with Armand Trousseau, Pierre Rayer, and Jean-Martin Charcot - all of whom he described as his closest friends. Duchenne was a shy yet hard-working physician. Despite his contributions, he was never given any hospital appointments or academic chair, likely due to his modesty and speech difficulties when presenting at conferences. Most of his work would not have been published without the help of his friends, Trousseau and Charcot.

Duchenne died in Paris in 1875.

Duchenne had many students throughout his career passing down his methodology and theoretical knowledge, as was common for physicians in training the next generation. Perhaps his most famous student was Jean-Martin Charcot, the "founder of modern neurology" who has at least 15 eponymous medical diseases and signs named after him, and perhaps the bane of medical students worldwide. He will be covered in detail next time.

Ajay Devgn - Biography - Family

Ajay Devgn - Biography - Family

Son of Veeru Devgan and Veena Devgan. Brother of Anil Devgan. Son-in-law of Bollywood actress Tanuja Mukherjee. Spouse: Kajol (24 February 1999 û present)

Being the son of a master action director, it was only obvious that Ajay would excel in action, but he surprised the industry and audiences alike with his superb comic performance in Inder Kumaræs Ishq and his emotionally moving performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansaliæs Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, exhibiting a range that was truly rare. By then Ajay had proven that there was no genre of cinema which was alien to him and he continued to excel in each of his roles. His stellar performance in Mahesh Bhattæs Zakhm fetched him his first ever National Award. His subtle yet hard-hitting performance in Company made him a Ram Gopal Varma favorite. Ajay later worked with Ramu on Bhoot.

His first attempt at non-commercial cinema earned him rave reviews for his performance opposite Aishwarya Rai in Rituparno Ghoshæs Raincoat. In his personal life, he married leading actress Kajol on 24th February 1999. The couple has two children, a daughter, Nysa Devgan, and a son, Yug Devgan. Contrary to his on-screen image, Ajay is a rather quiet personality but yet a master prankster on the sets of his films.

The last two years have seen Ajay grow in stature. In 2009, he had some lovely films on hand, like Vipul Shahæs London Dreams, which had shades of æAmadeusæ and the laugh riot All The Best. The year 2012 has turned out even better for Ajay with releases like Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Rajneeti, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai and Aakrosh. And in Diwali, he had seen in a comic caper, Rohit Shettyæs Golmaal 3. The best is definitely yet to come for this actor. The last two years have seen Ajay grow in stature.

Ajay Devgan
In December 2010, he starred along with wifey Kajol in India’s first live action animation, Toonpur ka Superr Hero. His first release in 2011 was Madhur Bhandarkaræs widely promoted, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, in which he’s paired with Shazahn Padamsee. Bhandarkar’s first foray into comedy also features Emraan Hashmi, Omi Vaidya, and Shruti Haasan.

Subsequently, he was the narrator in Yamla Pagla Deewana and did a cameo role in the Salman Khan-starred Ready. Devgan’s film Singham proved to be a milestone for him. The film grossed 100 crores net in India, making it the 7th film to do so. Devgn’s film Rascals released in December 2011. He paired up with Sanjay Dutt, in this film directed by the King of Comedy, David Dhawan. In the year 2012, his first release has been the multi-starrer thriller Tezz, which was helmed by Priyadarshan. He was last seen in the Rohit Shetty film æBol Bachchan’ which has done exceedingly well at the box office. His Diwali release Son Of Sardaar, directed by Ashwni Dhir and also starring Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, and Juhi Chawla, opened to huge numbers at the box-office and will surely turn out to be a big blockbuster.

Akshay Kumar - Biography - Mini Bio 2

Akshay Kumar - Biography - Mini Bio 2

A long road traveled; from a waiter in Bangkok, to the most successful actor in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar has come a long way. As an instructor in martial artist, Rajiv Bhatia always dreamed of making it big in that field but when a student suggested that with his good looks and a good built, he should take up modeling, the anonymous Rajiv Bhatia began his journey as Akshay Kumar who then slowly but surely worked his way up to becoming one of the most talented stars of the industry. Stunned at the pay package and his success as a model, Akshay took the next obvious step, and entered into films. However unlike most of the other stars in his time, Akshay neither had star parents, nor a godfather to launch him. Although his first few films were unsuccessful at the box office, they helped Akshay get noticed for his dancing abilities and his dare-devilish stunts. His first true hit film was Khiladi (1992) and although it was a success, the top banners continued to be elusive until Yeh Dillagi (1994) which not only got him recognition but marked his position as a top league actor. Though Jai Kishen (1994) and Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) were quite successful at the box office, it was Mohra (1994) and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) that it catapulted Akshay to fame and established his position as one of the top most heroes of the industry. With a series of 'Khiladi' movies including the "Khiladiyon Ke Khiladi', Akshay became the quintessential "action hero'. But with 'Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi', 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Aflatoon', he attempted new genres in order to change his stereotypical image, and he was quite successful at it. Another attempt at a new role with 'Ajnabee', where he played the villain, was again well portrayed and well received by audiences and critics alike. 'Dhadkan', where he starred opposite Shilpa Shetty reaffirmed the fact that aside from being an action hero, Akshay Kumar was also the perfect romantic lead. In the same year came another memorable performance with the film "Hera Pheri' which brought to the forefront his strength in comedy and superb timing as he held his ground with the seasoned Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Akshay Kumar continued to improve with every film, from "Khakee, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', "Aitraaz, Waqt', 'Awara Pagaal Deewana', "Garam Masala' to the recently released "Phir Hera Phiri' proved that Akshay was a sure-fire hit at the box-office as well. Today he is one of the most sought after actors who commands a strong box-office opening. His forthcoming films include Jaaneman, Saamna, London Namaste and Welcome.

Aamir Khan  - Biography - Personal Quotes

Every film I do means a lot to me. The failure of Mela, definitely made a difference to me. I am not comfortable with the idea of my films not releasing to their full potential.

Film making is like fighting a war with leadership at the front.

I found that what happened 150 years ago was happening again with Americans entering other countries and exploiting them but pretending they were doing a favor. It was this contemporary feel that attracted me.

My son is a harsh critic.

I enjoy the love I receive from my fans and my audience. But I think I know what is real for me and what is not.

A star needs to have style. Unfortunately I have very little. But Salman [Khan] has it all.

If a star comes close to holding the sway that Madhuri Dixit or Kajol did, it is Rani Mukerji. She pays attention to her work, has matured and become experienced with time.

Rani is one of my closest friends, we can talk about anything.

Rani [Mukerji] is a close friend. She is someone I am extremely fond of. We share a very good relationship. We can depend on each other.

I have no objections to film awards per se. I just feel that if I don't value a particular film award, then I won't attend it either. Apart from the national award, I don't see any other award ceremony that I should give value to. My personal experience about these award ceremonies is that I don't trust them. I have no faith in them so I would prefer to stay away.

When you need something with intensity, the mind kicks in and makes it possible.
