Kuang Si Falls, Luang Prabang

Kuang Si falls is a beautiful spot situated 32km south of Luang Prabang. These waterfalls are definitely a favorite place for tourists to visit in Luang Prabang.

It has a wide, many-tiered waterfall flowing over limestone formations into a series of fresh cool, turquoise pools and surrounded by thick banks of green and colorful vegetation on either side. There are several beautiful swimming holes around, with the most amazing green coloured water.

The trails around the falls are quite well maintained, so you can climb up to the highest point and view the stream that feeds to the falls.

In front of the pool at the lower level there is a picnic ground with car parking, shelters and tables available if you want to bring food. The admission fee is US$2.00 and the parking fee is US$0.25.

At the main entrance a few meters away there are two enclosures, one housing a tiger and the other Asian bears.

How To Get There

Travel agencies and guesthouses around town offer tours to go there for US$5 per person. Alternatively, you can hire boats down the Mekong River and do a short Jumbo ride over to the falls.

Many visitors make their way to the falls by hiring a bicycle or a motorbike, so they can stop along the way to take photos in the scenic villages. If you opt to cycle, make sure you are fit and have a bottle of water ready for when you get thirsty as the roads are rocky and unsealed.

multipower protein tozu
muscletech protein tozu
universal protein tozu
hardline protein tozu
twinlab protein tozu
gnc protein tozu
qnt protein tozu

Genel kullanım olarak;

Hukuk birimleri devrede

Catholics Struggle for Equal Rights

Catholics were opressed and mistreated by many groups or organizations in the United States for many years. They were rejected by society and violent crimes were committed against them. They struggled a lot but did not give up. Instead they started thinking of new ways so that the United States citizens would accept them and treat them equally.

Catholics found a new way to be treated like they deserved, to assimilate. They decided to assimilate into the American society but they still kept practicing their religion. One of the things they did was to participate in both World Wars. By becoming part of the American army they were showing their loyalty to the nation and they hoped that the citizens would see that. Catholics then started gaining the reputation of being socially responsible and for being leaders in the community. Catholic priests and people became involved in social labor and started caring for the poor. They opened shelters and homes for poor and helped them with basic needs like food or clothing. By doing most of these things, people started changing the way they saw Catholics. Others accepted them because they said it was better to have some religion than not having any type of religion. Catholics started seeing progress when president John F. Kennedy was elected president. JFK was Catholic and although he had a hard time winning the elections he still won. Being Catholic almost cost his election but he succeeded.

The fought for equal rights was a very tough one but they did not give up and they eventually succeeded. Assimilation was their choice so they wouldnt be rejected by American society. They fought in world wars, started showing their care for the poor, opened shelters and a catholic won the United States presidency. Catholicism is one of the religions that is most practiced in the Unites States and that wasnt easy gained. They had to work and gain their respect but they did it and now they are wide known and a very popular religion around the world.

Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef

A whale shark is the worlds biggest species of fish and you have the opportunity to snorkel with them. Every year from April to July the whale sharks come to Ningaloo Reef at Coral Bay.
A whale shark can grow up to 15m long and as they are filter feeders they are harmless to humans. They cruise the world's oceans looking for large concentrations to feed on. Ningaloo Reef is one of the few places in the world they appear regularly in large numbers.

This is an opportunity in a life time and people travel all over the world to the Ningaloo Reef during this time to see and swim with them. You will need to be a confident swimmer.

INTERESTING INFO ABOUT THE WHALE SHARK

It is rare to see a whale shark swimming alone. Smaller fish like to swim with whale sharks - sometimes even a whole school of fish will be swimming around them. Pilot fish swim around their head. A popular theory for this is for protection. With the size of the whale shark, the enemy of the pilot fish are too scared to come close therefore leaving the pilot fish alone. Remoras also swim with them. The remoras use its sucker to attach itself to the whale shark and helps the whale shark by eating parasites off its skin.

Whale sharks are considered to be good-luck fish.

The Japanese fishermen are careful not to catch a whale shark. They call them "ebisuzame" which is a good luck symbol.

In Vietnam they are called "Ca Ong", which means "Sir Fish". Sir Fish is a God the Vietnamese fishermen pray to for protection and good catches of fish.

WHALE SHARK BODY PARTS

The first of the whale shark body parts is its teeth. They have thousands of tiny teeth inside its mouth - sometimes up to 4,000. These teeth are about the size of the tip of a match-stick. For the figures people that is about 0.3cm or an 1/8 of an inch.

The teeth are arranged in the mouth in 300 rows. Obviously these teeth are not big enough to be used to eat but they are big enough to help them catch and eat. In fact it is a bit of a mystery why they even have teeth. The teeth are similar to what you will find on a file or rasp.

With all of these teeth another important body part is its mouth. It has a huge mouth which can be up to 2 metres wide. The mouth is at the very front of its head (not on the underside of the head like in most sharks). The head needs to be big to accommodate this huge mouth. It has a wide, flat head, a rounded snout and small eyes. Other body parts include 5 very large gill slits, 2 dorsal fins (on its back) and 2 pectoral fins (on its sides). The first dorsal fin is much larger than the second dorsal fin, and set rearward on the body. Its tail has a top fin much larger than the lower fin. These are called lobed caudal fins and are semi-lunate in adults.

Whale sharks catch their food (plankton and small fish and squid), by swimming with their mouth open. As they swim, water and small animals go into their mouth. The water leaves through its gill slits, trapping food in the gill rakers.

Whale sharks have five gill slits on each side of their head. Gill rakers strain the good stuff out of all this water they take into their mouth and use the good parts for food.

Whale sharks breathe with gills. Gills are used to get oxygen from the water and this helps them breathe.

WHALE SHARK REPRODUCTION AND BIRTH

It was widely believed the whale shark reproduction process and birth was like other fish (oviparous - egg cases expelled from the female's body and hatched on the sea floor). This would involve a female whale shark laying her eggs and the male fertilising them. We now know that a female keeps her eggs inside her body until the babies are ready to be born (viviparous - egg cases hatching in the mother's uteri, with the female giving birth to live young).

A whale shark may have hundreds of thousands of eggs inside her but not every egg will become an embryo. Some of these eggs are actually food for the other eggs that do develop into embryos. An embryo eats the other eggs for energy and therefore to grow.

In 1995 a team of scientists found an 11 metre female whale shark in Taiwan that had been killed by a fisherman. There were about 300 embryos inside her ranging in length from 42 to 63cm. Amazingly, 15 of the embryos were still alive and were ready to be born - an extremely rare form of birth. The egg capsules were amber in colour, with a smooth texture and had a respiratory opening on each side. There were an equal number of male and female babies.

The whale sharks that are born are called pups - the pups are over 60cm (2 feet) long.

Sexual maturity does not occur until they reach about 9metres long. This means a whale shark reproduction maturity age of about 30 years old. Whale sharks live for about 60-100 years.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT WHALE SHARKS

They are actually fish and not whales. Not only that but they are the biggest fish in the world and once fully grown they can be as long as 15 metres in length and weigh 20 tonnes.

They are the biggest fish in the world but they are also a very gentle fish. They eat only plankton and other small fish and are not interested in eating other things. That is why people from all over the world travel to Ningaloo Reef at Coral Bay during the spawning of the coral to swim with them. The spawning of the coral happens between March and June. This attracts the whale shark for food.

The correct species name of a whale shark is Rhincodon typus with "Rhincodon" meaning "rasp teeth" - which is what the whale sharks 4,000 tiny teeth look like (a rasp).

Whale shark are a pelagic species. This means they swim in the open ocean but usually found in the tropical parts of the oceans.

They are reddish brown in colour with a pattern of lines that crisscross each other on their skin. Inside these grids are yellow dots.

Additional interesting facts about whale shark is they pay no attention to boats. At their size why would they? So boat owners and captains need to be careful where whale sharks are and it is up to the boat to avoid "accidents".

Catholics Being Opressed

The Catholic religion is a very common one in the United States and around the world but back then it was not. The United States religion around the 1700 was the Protestant religion. Catholics were discriminated by many different organizations and people. Citizens who wanted to practice the catholic religion was very hard for them because they were not accepted or rejected by society.

United States Citizens used to practice the Protestant Religion for many years. People who came from other countries like Ireland and wanted to practice the Catholic religion was almost impossible for them. These people were opressed by the Ku Klux Klan and other Christian denominations. These would vandalize and burn their houses, cars, and other property. These groups also committed violent crimes like the killing of catholics. Citizens believed that by practicing the catholic religion they were damaging or destroying the culture of the United States. Many incidents happened with catholics who wanted to held high positions in companies and even in the government. In 1928, Al Smith wanted to run for president but guess what? HE LOST! Smith was catholic and since the majority of US citizens were anti-catholics, he didnt have enough votes.

Many Catholics citizens in the United States had a hard time when it was time to practice their religion. These were rejected or discriminated by many organizations like the Ku Klux Klan that only accepted the pure white and by the Protestants. Catholics property was burned and destroyed and other Catholics were even killed. As you could see this religion issue affected many people and even politicians. Good thing that the religion issues in the United States have improved.

Do you think Truman handled well the entrance of the United States into the Cold War? Or do you think Roosevelt would have made different/better decisions?

It is doubted that Roosevelt could have preserved the Grand Alliance any better than Truman. Although Truman was less experienced in foreign policy than Roosevelt, the failure to handle this situation did not come from the American president, but from Stalin’s determination to follow up his plans no matter what. Roosevelt was already very ill at Yalta and could not keep up with Stalin even in theory. The problem of democratic elections in Eastern Europe remained unresolved. Roosevelt hoped to satisfy Stalin’s demands through the UN, but even if Roosevelt had lived, the UN was established too late to do anything. When the Yalta Conference occurred, Poland was already occupied and Stalin was speeding up the “Sovietization” of the Eastern European countries. During the so-called free elections held in Eastern Europe, the observers sent by the Western nations witnessed powerlessly what was happening. The Allies had no resources anymore to start a new war with a Russia that occupied half of Europe and arrived in Berlin before them. Europe was crushed by four years of war, while America was devastated by a war on two fronts and did not have anymore the resources to pursue a new conflict with more than uncertain outcomes. With the Bolsheviks’ clear ideological objective to world widely export the socialist revolution, neither Roosevelt nor anyone else would have been able to stop Stalin, hence the development of the Cold War.

Henretta, James A, and David Brody. “America: A Concise History, Volume II: Since 1877.” 4th ed., Boston: Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2010, 769

Why was the United States unable to avoid entering a Cold War with the Soviet Union?

The Cold War was mainly a conflict for world supremacy. After the World War II, only two world superpowers stood up, each with its own political and economical ideology, and strategic interest, and a conflict between them was unavoidable. This competition was the fuel of the Cold War and since none of the parts was willing to give up and take defeat, the conflict lasted as long as the two superpowers existed. As the Soviet Union began to assert its control in Eastern Europe, the expansion of communism became the main concern of the United States. The US Government feared that, as the Soviet power was growing, this could generate revolution in the Western European countries and the movement would eventually reach the American soil. The danger seemed even higher as communist parties already existed in the Western hemisphere. In the same time, to keep total control, the communist states were isolated from the rest of the world (from where the term of Iron Curtain). This isolation increased the worry of the US government.

The Cold War was rooted in the fear of communism. To avoid this possibility, the United States took measures to block the expansion of the communist ideology. This odd sort of war was opened not by a cannon shot, but by a well known discourse. The speech delivered by Winston Churchill in 1946 in the town of Fulton, Missouri, drew attention to the danger that Western democracies were on the verge of being swallowed up by communism, and suggested a close Anglo-American alliance to defend their interests. The blackmail of the atomic bomb could not serve anymore at that time especially since the Soviets already had this weapon. And since the offensive was not recommended, the chosen alternative was the defensive. In 1947 President Truman, concerned about the security of Greece and Turkey, announced the Truman Doctrine. The U.S. agreed to support the free nations’ fight against the attempts of subjugation. This meant that the U.S. would act to restrain the expansion of communism.
