Sea Kayaking Kodiak, Alaska - Exploring an Island Paradise

Thousands of miles of awe-inspiring coastline have enticed a small, but growing, number of adventurers to discover the wonders of sea kayaking Southwest Alaska. At the forefront of destinations in this remote region is Kodiak. The island is the second largest island in the United States, yet, owing to it's numerous fjords, no point of land on Kodiak Island is more than 15 miles from the sea. Don't be deceived by Kodiak's listing as the fourth-largest community in Alaska; it is still small enough to get by with it's one traffic light turned off.

Locals have long known of Kodiak's natural bounty; native Koniag hunters used the qayaq or baidarka for thousands of years for hunting, transportation and recreation. Today, the community boasts more than 100 resident paddlers, young and old, and experience levels vary from recreational to expedition-ready. Despite its reputation as a fishing community, on the streets of this town more watercraft are carried on roof racks than trailers. From their lofty perch atop vehicles, Kodiak's kayaks pivot through the city's bustle between evening and weekend paddling outings, making their way to the rocky islets and protected bays unique to the island.

The geophysical relief of Kodiak Island is phenomenal. Rocky coasts at sea level quickly rise to 3,000-foot peaks in the space of a few miles. Ice fields still dominate the interior of the island, and snow is visible on the major peaks though midsummer. At sea level, coasts with easterly exposure consist of jagged rock cliffs and towering spires, while more protected shores may enjoy gentle coastline and broad beaches, either white from volcanic ash or black from volcanic shale. With a long look east toward continental North America some 500 miles away, Kodiak is one of the few places on the west coast where one can watch the sun rise over the Pacific.

Within a day's paddle from the city, kayakers can visit any of a dozen uninhabited islands. These waters are also home to five species of whale, which come to Kodiak to feed continuously during the long summer days. Whale sightings just offshore are relatively common to local paddlers.
Though Kodiak can be exposed to the ferocity of the North Pacific, during the summer months calm winds and seas prevail, and open-ocean crossings of one to three miles are commonplace. A series of these crossings intermixed with coastal exploration suggest possibilities for roundtrip expeditions from simple overnights to weeks-long trips of several hundred miles.

On windier days, a short drive from the City of Kodiak to Anton Larsen Bay provides paddlers an escape from the easterly seas, and is home to an abundance of seabirds and aquatic wildlife who seem to take a similar interest in the refuge provided there. Sea otters in this bay, once hunted by paddlers in baidarkas, watch curiously from a safe distance. When heavy surf is on the menu, drive to the nearby Pasagshak beaches to find surf kayakers, surfers and harbor seals riding waves alongside one another, and put in to ride some of the island's wildest waves.

Kodiak is proud of its kayaking heritage and newfound status as an adventurer's destination. Several local shops and outfitters provide kayak sales, equipment and guided tours and rentals. Paddlers wave to one another, passing in cars or out in the channel. Whether it's for the recreational or expedition paddler, Kodiak is a world-class sea kayaking destination.

Mimi isteyen herkes üzerine alıp blogunda yazabilir. Ama adetendir ya illa birine göndermek gereklidir. Eee ebeyi seçtim o zaman mydestiny seni seçtim canım :)

History Bestsellers: 'BLOODLANDS: Europe Between Hitler And Stalin'

“For over a decade in the middle of twentieth century, the lands between Russia and Germany were the killing fields of Europe. Tens of millions of civilians from Poland to Ukraine, Lithuania to Belarus were starved, beaten, shot and gassed to death by the authorities and armies of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

Bloodlands – impeccably researched and appropriately sensitive to its volatile material – is the most important book to appear on this subject for decades and will surely become the reference in its field.”

“Nearly seventy years after VE-Day, World War Two continues to be perceived through a narrow Western perspective, and many basic problems about the war of 1939-45 remain unresolved. In Bloodlands – which refers to the huge belt of territory between Germany and Russia – Timothy Snyder examines the little known tract of the European continent that was scourged by Stalin as well as Hitler, and reaches some disturbing conclusions.

“A chillingly systematic study of the mass murder mutually perpetrated by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany…. A significant work of staggering figures and scholarship.”

Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin forces a dramatic shift in these perceptions…. Among his other goals in Bloodlands, Mr. Snyder attempts to put the Holocaust in context—to restore it, in a sense, to the history of the wider European conflict. This is a task that no historian can attempt without risking controversy. Yet far from minimizing Jewish suffering, Bloodlands gives a fuller picture of the Nazi killing machine.”

Best iPhone Apps

Do you own an iPhone? Even if you don’t, you may love these apps (on your own phone) as much as I love them (on mine)!!! By the way, these are all free. **even if you don't have a phone, you can use many of these on your computers!**

Voice Memos: Did you forget something? Did you want to blog about something? Did you finally think of something cool to give your brother for Christmas? This is your savior, especially if you are driving and don’t have time to use the notes feature. I was actually going to buy a digital voice recorder from Target for Eighty dollars, and then they came up with this app. I am so glad.

Pandora: Do you like music? Have you used this on your computer? Well, it’s even better on your phone; you can make your own music stations; you can listen in the car, on the go, at work…wherever! And it’s free: both the app AND the program on your computer, so even if you don’t use it on your phone, do it on your computer!! You can listen to Cyndi Lauper! Metallica! Whatever you want and MORE!

Yelp: Do you want to find a place to….rent a bike? Eat Mexican food? A new gym? A place to buy a pair of shorts? Yelp is your friend! It is reviewed by your peers and can tell you where the closest place to you NOW is (this is what I use the most…I am HUNGRY…where can I eat within walking distance?)

Lose It: Are you trying to lose weight? Track your eating habits?  Do you want to know how many calories is in a 6 oz glass of white wine (or a 14 oz oneI? Lose It can tell you all of that. You enter in what you are eating and what exercise you are doing and VOILA it tells you your deficit and how many calories you can have per day if you want to lose X amount of pounds (or just stay healthy!!)

Flickr: I use this on my computer, but it is really nice on my phone. I can easily upload a photo from my phone, tag it, add it to a group and then blog about it. This has been a GODSEND for my 365 project.

Stanza: This, before I found out about the free Kindle download, was a way I downloaded a bunch of public domain books (ones that no longer have a copyright) FOR FREE!!! It is a little bit hard to read on my phone, but when you are in a pinch, it is great.

Kindle: And then I found out about the iPhone Kindle download and I now have both this and Stanza and have still not figured out what I like best, so I thought I would mention both. I got a bunch of FREE books from the Kindle website, which are also on the public domain (think: Sense and Sensibility, A Christmas Carol etc) I won’t tell you which I like better; you can decide on your own and then let ME know!!!

Shazam: Have you ever heard a song on the radio and said, “oh my god this is Journey!!!” and your boyfriend says, “NO it’s not; this is Flock of Seagulls!!!” and you get into a stupid argument about it? Enter: Shazam. You hear the song on the radio, you push the “listen now” button, Shazam says, “Journey: Don’t Stop Believing” and you say, “BOO YAH!!!” and then your boyfriend buys you a scoop of vanilla ice cream with almonds. You just can’t go wrong with this app. It will settle ALL BETS.

OpenTable: So, you are in New York City on a Friday night and you just got in from La Guardia and you are starving. You check OpenTable for restaurants within walking distance that have an available reservation in a half an hour. No problem! OpenTable to the rescue. They tell you who has space, what kind of food they have and when to show up. They make the reservation for you. Not only that, but you get “points” so if you make a certain amount of reservations with OpenTable you get dining dollars for your next trip out. Even if you go out once a year, it can add up eventually.

Bump: Does your friend have an address or phone number of a friend that you want? No problem, just use bump and literally bump your phones together to get the information from her phone to yours. Easy as pie.

ShakeItPhoto: So you took a cool photo with your phone. Now you want to see what it would look like as a Polaroid. Pick the photo; shake your phone and you are set! It creates a cool effect and is fun to boot!

Which ones are your favorites and why?

Travelogue: Palm Beach

To say December was a busy month, would be quite an understatement.  Moving halfway across the country is no small feat.  I had a little time to catch up on all the magazines that had been piling up unread on my flight to Florida.  One such magazine was Elle Decor, the December/January issue, that I had not devoured it the second it arrived in my mailbox, is design blasphemy, I know.

But it couldn't have felt more like kismet that their travel feature was on Palm Beach, the destination I was quickly heading towards as I read the article.  The article's map with it's tips on where to eat, what to do, and where to shop was just what a girl needed to unwind, as the experts had already done the research for me.

If I could sum up Palm Beach in one word it would be opulent.

I had the opportunity to take in all of it's Gilded Age glory epitomized in the Flagler Museum (the once oil baron's Palm Beach mansion, now a museum).  The decor was as well suited for an American mansion as a castle in Europe.  When I thought there was no such thing as too much Carrara marble I was proven wrong--whole walls, pillars, floors of carrara marble enshrined almost the entire entryway, and when I say entryway, I mean the largest room in this oversized mansion perched on the intercoastal waterway.

Dusk on the Waterway

It's hard not to revert to childhood when you are in a house of this size with so many rooms, imagining rounding up a group of people to play a game of hide-and-go-seek.

For more Gilded Age delights, there is the iconic Breakers Hotel, it's imposing stature greets you on your drive up and continues as you walk in to the lobby and traverse it's long hallways.  We had lunch overlooking the ocean, and I found a couple stealing a dance in one of the many ballrooms.  How romantic!

Breakers Hotel

Then, there is the shopping.  With Worth Avenue rivaling Rodeo Drive there is no better place to get your fill of designer stores with a few local boutiques.  The town was still decorated for the holidays, a beautiful christmas tree decorated to the hilt juxtaposed against a Chanel store--does such a sight only exist in Palm Beach?
Worth Avenue

And a visit to Palm Beach doesn't seem complete without taking home something Lilly Pulitzer.  I happened to find flats for a killer deal at this store.

There is also the design mecca, Celerie Kimble Interiors nearby.

One of the greatest treats besides catching up with family, was a night at Cafe L'Europe (also on the Elle Decor restaurant list), this was already set on the itinerary as my uncle can often be found playing clarinet with the piano virtuouso who is practically an institution at the restaurant.  As a piano player, and lover of Chopin, sitting amidst the melodic notes of my favorite Nocturne, with a glass of Muscato in my hand and a dessert quartet was pure heaven.

Cafe L'Europe harkens back to a time past, the setting and service seem more 1940's Europe than 2000 something Palm Beach, but one look at the surrounding restaurant patrons brings you back to reality--yes, they do look stereotypical Palm Beach night-on-the-town.

To top it off, I finally got to try Baked Alaska, a dessert that I had never really given much thought to until I saw Chef v. City Palm Springs.  This show happened to star a family friend who owns the fabulous desert restaurant Tropicale (also formerly Barbara Streisand's chef) as he vied for a chance to beat out the Chef on this Food Network show.  One of the challenges was to make Baked Alaska, hence, my craving.  I just had a sneaking suspicion that Cafe L'Europe was the type of place that whipped up Baked Alaska.  I was right, and it didn't disappoint.
