GREEK ARMED FORCES ON HIGH ALERT DUE TO NEW TURKISH NAVTEX

in-cyprus 21 July 2020 - by Maria Bitar

Turkish resource surveys to the south and east of the Greek island of Kastellorizo will start today and will continue until August 2 the Attaleia hydro graphic service in Turkey announced.

It has been declared by Ankara that the research ship ‘Oruc Reis’ will sail in the area and for this reason the Greek armed forces are on high alert throughout the territory.

Also, today, a pair of Turkish F-16 aircrafts flew over the islands of Strongyli and Megisti at 12,500 feet at 2:23 pm.

It is noted that Athens is ready to respond to Turkey’s instigation of a general crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wants to accelerate hostile developments in the region.

A possible acceleration of the Turkish mobilisation would be aimed either at preventing an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) demarcation agreement between Greece and Egypt or accelerating developments before the US elections.

In recent weeks, Athens has conducted naval exercises.

Concern is heightened by the fact that Ankara appears to be pursuing polarisation options on all fronts in the Eastern Mediterranean.

CAP OF 25 PATIENT VISITS PER DAY TO ORTHOPAEDICS SET BY GESY

in-cyprus 21 July 2020 - by Maria Bitar

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has now put a cap of 25 patient visits per day to Orthopaedics.

Orthopaedic doctors will now only be able to enter/register 25 patients per day in the General Health System software.

Cardiologists also get a cap on the amount of electrocardiograms (EKG’s) they can perform per month as the number cannot exceed 70% of the total monthly number of visits for which they’ll require compensation for by the HIO.

The HIO initiates this method of applying certain restrictions per medical speciality in an attempt to end the abuses registered through the General Healthcare System (GESY).

It launches with the specialities of orthopaedics and cardiology and in the following days restrictions for more specialities will be announced.

This is a bid to “obligate” doctors to act more responsibly and to not submit patients to unnecessary tests and not an attempt to punish them the Deputy Director of HIO Athos Tsinontides said to Philenews.

“The process of adding and removing restrictions will be continuous and we will move according to the recommendations of our doctors”, he added.

Restrictions will apply to giving injections that apply to tendon ailments for orthopaedics.
In cases where the numbers monthly are exceeded the HIO will not reimburse the doctors and the doctors will not be allowed to receive payment by the beneficiaries for them either.

In regards to cardiology the restrictions will also apply to the “fatigue test” procedure at 15% and the “duplex scans” at 8%.

Additionally, no multiple procedures may be claimed over the course of a single patient visit by the doctors.

HIO added that they reserve the right afforded to them by the law to impose penalties in cases where repeated abuses of the system are detected.

Depending on the nature of the violation HIO may order or suggest to the repeat offender to stop doing it within a reasonable time limit and to avoid its recurrence in the future.

They added that they may also impose an administrative fine that can’t be higher than 30,000 euro depending on the nature, duration and gravity of the violation.

Continuation of the violation after than will be subject to an additional administrative fine anywhere from 340 euro to 3400 euro for every additional day it occurs depending on its gravity.

TEN WOMEN WHO CAME TO ENTER SHAM MARRIAGES SENT HOME

Cyprus Mail 21 July 2020 - by Evie Andreou

Ten women from another EU member-state who were held at Larnaca airport on Sunday on arrival, after a tip-off that they were planning on entering into sham marriages in Cyprus, have already been sent back to their country, police said on Tuesday.

According to police deputy spokesman Stelios Stylianou, the 10 women, who arrived at Larnaca airport on Sunday from another European country, were sent home after being questioned. He said the authorities of the country from which the women arrived have been notified.

Stylianou told the Cyprus Mail the women were held at the airport and, after it was established that they were not human trafficking victims, they were sent back.

The case is also being investigated by Cypriot authorities, he said.

The government has been trying for years to clamp down on sham marriages usually between women from other EU countries and men from third countries.

Interior Minister Nikos Nouris told MPs last May that after such couples get married, often the third-country nationals, who register as spouses of a European citizen, leave Cyprus to go to other countries in Europe.

The issue has also concerned other EU countries – Romania, Portugal, and reportedly Latvia – that blamed Cyprus of not taking enough measures to clamp down on the sham marriage networks operating on the island and which exploit their citizens for sham marriages with third-country nationals.

The EU nationals who take part in the scam are paid a fraction of the money people from third countries pay while the networks usually pocket thousands of euros.

Last month, Nouris announced a raft of measures to curb the migration flow, including toughening entry rules for foreign students, clamping down on sham marriages and creating a list of 21 ‘safe countries’ whose nationals will not be considered for asylum.

Nouris had said that the government had prepared three law amendments to prevent sham marriages arguing that between 2017 and 2019, almost 4,000 sham marriages have been officiated, mostly from specific municipalities. The minister also said that between 2017 and 2019, around 2,200 people who arrived as students  entered into marriages with European nationals which were justifiably deemed as sham marriages.

CHEVRON TAKEOVER OF NOBLE ENERGY COULD AFFECT 'APHRODITE' DISCOVERY

in-cyprus 21 July 2020 - by Annie Charalambous

The acquisition of US Noble Energy company by Chevron is a development that may affect the ‘Aphrodite’ deposit discovery offshore Cyprus, the Ministry of Energy has said.

Minister Natasa Pilides will have, in the next few days, teleconferences with the heads of both Chevron and Noble Energy in order to get fully informed on the agreement reached between them, a written announcement also said.

And developments in ‘Aphrodite’ gas field will be carefully evaluated by the Ministry, it added.

Analysts say that Chevron’s strategy is based on maintaining dividend growth.

And that further investment in its core portfolio, which now includes Cyprus, is to be expected, despite the sharply lower gas prices that have taken the bottom out of the market today.
