THOUSANDS OF HOMELESS DOGS FROM CYPRUS ADOPTED ABROAD

From in-cyprus.com - 7 June 2018

Thousands of homeless dogs from Cyprus have been sent abroad for adoption as part of efforts by animal protection societies to tackle the problem of strays and ease pressure on overcrowded shelters.

Data was submitted to the House of Representatives by Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis in response to a question from Greens MP Giorgos Perdikis. Perdikis also queried whether among the dogs being re-homed abroad there were cases of pets who were not homeless or abandoned but had been lost or stolen and were being sought by the owners.
The minister said that dogs sent for adoption abroad were all checked by the Veterinary Services. He said that a total of 10,850 had been sent from  Cyprus in the past three years — 2,858 dogs in 2015 ,  3,703 dogs in 2016 and  4,289 in 2017 . Most (3,963) were sent from Limassol district. Next comes Nicosia with 2,694 , Famagusta district with 1,560, Paphos with 1,403 and finally Larnaca with 1,230 dogs.
Most are adopted in the United Kingdom and Germany. In 2017, 3219 dogs were sent to the UK, 651 to Germany and 305 to the Netherlands.
Kadis said the transfer of dogs for adoption abroad by animal protection societies  was carried out under the supervision of the Veterinary Department in line with an EU law that specifies that animals must be registered with TRACES (Trade Control and Expert System) and are issued a health certificate. The latter requires a clinical test by a vet within 48 hours of the dog travelling abroad. The dog must have an EU passport certifying the clinical test, vaccination against rabies and the microchip number. Authorities also check whether the dog had a microchip, was registered and therefore has an owner. The certificate costs €34.17  per animal which translates into revenue of  €97,658, €126,532 and €146,555, for 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively, totalling  €370,745.

Kadis confirmed that the 10,850 dogs sent abroad in the past three years included a few cases of pets that were not meant for adoption but for which a TRACE certificate was issued because the animal was travelling unaccompanied.

DEATH OF A ROMANOV PRINCE SELLING NOW ON AMAZON!

Death of a Romanov Prince - Prince Oleg Konstantinovich’s Promising Life and Early Death “The coffin was lowered into the grave......

“Soon there was a burial mound above. It was quickly covered with wreaths, flowers and crowned with a plain wooden cross. Prince Oleg’s promising life was finished.”

Death of a Romanov Prince follows the brief life-journey of Prince Oleg Konstantinovich, one of the lesser-known members of the powerful and privileged Russian Imperial family. He was a talented young man of intellectual and artistic genius. Oleg was the gifted son of the talented Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, who wrote under the pseudonym of KR. The Grand Duke was a friend of Tchaikovsky, who set his numerous poems to music, and who established literary circles for his troops, translated Hamlet into Russian, and wrote The King of the Jews, an original play that he and his sons performed.

The reader will follow Prince Oleg Konstantinovich, his family, and Imperial cousins, as his life takes him via the luxuries of the family’s four magnificent palaces of Pavlovsk, in Tsarskoye Selo, the Marble Palace in St Petersburg, the Konstantine Palace at Strelna; and the Ostashevo Estate near Moscow; as well as numerous holidays in the Crimea.

The young prince enjoyed the most liberal program in literary, scientific, and artistic education. He was the first Romanov to be enrolled in a civilian school and graduated from the Imperial Lyceum in St Petersburg, where in 1913 he won the Pushkin Medal for his academic achievements. At the age of 21, Prince Oleg Konstantinovich was on the crest of a brilliant career and personal greatness when World War I began. Then tragedy struck ...

Death of a Romanov Prince brings the reader into the battlefields of World War I’s Eastern Front. Bloody battles fought in northern Poland and Lithuania’s Masurian Lakes. It was while fighting there that Prince Oleg led his troops into heroic cavalry charges against the Germans.

DANCERS FOR CHARITY FAIL TO BREAK WORLD RECORD

Cyprus Mail - article by Bejay Browne 4 June 2018

A group of hundreds of dancers failed to break a world record in front of the castle in Kato Paphos on Sunday, but have vowed to try again in October.
It was hoped that 1,200 people would turn up, and at least 1,000 people were needed, to dance the Hasapiko for five minutes straight to steal the title. Less than eight hundred people took part in the dance.

The event also aimed to raise awareness and funds for the Archangel Michael hospice in Mesa Chorio in Paphos. It was organised jointly by the hospice and the Ktima folk dancing group and supported by the municipality of Paphos.
Hundreds of people descended on Paphos castle square on Sunday afternoon, but as around two hundred of them turned up late and not wearing the required black trousers and white top they were not able to take part, according to organisers.
“Some people were missing and when they came they weren’t wearing the right clothes, just their regular clothes and so they didn’t count. But we will try again in October and people can register an interest with the hospice now,” said hospice general manager Mona Skordi,:
She said that although the record breaking attempt was not successful, overall their aim was accomplished as the event was televised all over the world and positively promoted Paphos and Cyprus in general.
“This went worldwide and was a good exercise for donations and fund raising for the hospice,” she said.
The hospice is the second such facility in the district, the first, the Friends Hospice opened in 2006 and is found at a dedicated six-bed wing of St George’s clinic in Paphos.
The Archangel Michael hospice in Mesa Chorio opened in June 2015 and has nine rooms used for palliative and respite care, including two for children.
“We are the only hospice in Cyprus to be licensed to take children,” she said.
The facility aims to offer free hospice and palliative care to all those with life limiting illnesses, regardless of their religious belief or nationality.
Skordi said that it costs around 300,000 euros a year to operate the facility, which has already helped hundreds of patients since it opened.
The current record for the largest ‘Hasapiko Dance’ is held by Larnaca municipality. The record was set in 2010, when 749 people danced in Europe Square
