MAIN BUS STATION IN KATO PAPHOS TO BE MOVED

From Cyprus Mail 3 August 2016 - article by Bejay Browne

THE main bus terminal serving the tourist area in Kato Paphos will be moved in a few months as it is built on top of a major archaeological site, according to the local municipality.

Although the bus station was granted licence to be built a number of years ago, Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos and the municipality are insisting it should be moved to another site, according to a municipality spokesman.

“The bus station is built in an important archaeological area and the municipality is insisting that it should be moved very soon. This is not a place to have a construction as it is forbidden to build on this archaeological site,” he said.

The bus terminal is next to the archaeological park in Kato Paphos, which has been a recognised UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980.   For many years, campaigners have been demanding that the main bus terminal is relocated back to its original site in Pano Paphos, as they say businesses in the area have been adversely affected after the station moved to Kato Paphos.  Many believe that the revitalisation of the old town, which is currently seeing large swathes of it dug up as major upgrading plans are underway, is dependent on it.

Kyriacos Kyriacou, head of the Pafos Old Town Association, said that the association members and the public still support the notion of moving the station back to the old town.  Under a previous government and a decision made by a former minister, a deal was made to move the bus station from Karavella in the old town to the harbour area of Kato Paphos.

“We have been trying for a long time to get the terminal moved back and also for a one ticket system to be incorporated, rather than double ticketing for a journey stating from Coral Bay and ending in the old town, for example,” he said.  He added that vested interests are making this difficult.
However, the municipality spokesman said that the station would be moved to another area close by and that several other sites are being considered, although nothing has yet been agreed.

“The Tomb of the Kings Road is a possibility, as is an area opposite the Anemi hotel in Kato Paphos. There are alternatives but nothing has been decided yet.”  Although the municipality would like to take action immediately, they are mindful that it is currently the height of the tourist season, he said, adding that the action would most likely take place in October or November.

New Walkways

Well, here it is! The big project we have been working on, New sidewalk, walkway and steps!
When I bought my little house, I knew the sidewalks were one of the things that needed to be done. But it was also one of the things that kept getting moved to the bottom of the list.

Old cracked walkway.
I am so excited to finally have this done! Every winter we would shovel pieces of the old walk up. And it wasn't helping the curb appeal any. (Now I can't wait to shovel snow!)

Aren't those pretty steps! A lot fancier then what was there before. A friend was helping my brother build basement steps and they kindly offered to also make my steps. (It just happened the ratio of rise and run worked for both sets of stairs!)

I love the rounded edges that won't get chipped or snagged.
As you can see, there has already been quite a bit of traffic up and down the steps already.

There is still a bit of landscaping to do. And since it has been so dry, the grass is a little worse for wear. But a bit of dirt and grass seed should fix it right up. Happily, it is not a huge yard.

One of the reasons this project kept getting moved down the list, is concrete is not the most fun diy project, especially removing the concrete. After a neighbor had their sidewalks replaced, I called and had the same company come and do mine. That made it easy!

There was a walkway that curved around the house to the back yard. It was also starting to crack up and wasn't really serving a purpose, so I had it removed. Now I will have a bit more space for my cutting garden!

And as I didn't want to leave you with a messy in-progress picture, here is one last look at the steps! (Sorry these photos have been lacking in color, apparently the geraniums are taking a breather.)

Zyzz Kimdir?

PROPERTY TRANSFER FEES REDUCTION PERMANENT

From Cyprus Property News - article by Nigel Howarth - published 29 July 2016

GOOD news for those who applied for the Title Deeds under the provisions of the ‘trapped buyers’ law and who were concerned that they would be unable to benefit from the 50 per cent reduction in their Property Transfer Fees if the transfer did not take place by 31st December 2016 – and everyone else waiting for their deeds. Earlier today the Finance Ministry announced  that it has lifted the temporary arrangement to reduce Property Transfer Fees by 50 per cent, which was valid until 31st December 2016. The 50 per cent reduction is now permanent; the law implementing the change, ‘Land and Surveys Department (Fees and Rights) (Amendment) (No. 2) Law’, was passed on 14th July 2016 at a plenary session of the Cyprus parliament. In its announcement the Finance Ministry said “The above arrangement aims to boost additional growth in the construction industry and attract new investments from both the domestic, and the foreign markets.”
