Pyramid of Albania

The pyramid, as it's popularly known, opened in 1988 as a museum dedicated to the Albanian dictator-cum-pharaoh Enver Hoxha. Designed by Hoxha's daughter Pranvera, the building was reportedly the most expensive ever erected in Albania. After the regime collapsed, the place became a conference center and location of a club (called The Mummy, of course). Now semi-derelict, the government wants to demolish it to make place for new parliament buildings, though there's a healthy heated debate about the destruction of the past and preservation of the park going on.
In front of the building, the Peace Bell installation was made in 1999 as a memorial to peace by the children of Shkodra. The bell's metal comes from thousands of bullet cartridges, fired off during the lawless 1990s.

Old Quebec City, Canada - The Beauty of the St Lawrence River

Do you like traveling all around the world? If you do, try to visit old Quebec City in Canada. It has a beautiful river which is known as St. Lawrence.

This river is 430 km away from Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. To go there, you can choose scenic route through St. Lawrence River. This river offers you a fascinating view. It flows through St. Jerome, Trois-Rivieres, and old Quebec City.

The first city is St. Jerome. It is usually crowded during the winter. During this season, there will be more tourists that transit in this city before they go to the Mont-Tremblant which is well-known for its ski on the eastern of Canada.

The second city is Trois-Rivieres. It is in the between of Montreal and Quebec City. This used to be the main city that produces paper and pulp. This has a story background and a lot of old buildings that make it an interesting place to visit. The main boulevard in this city is Boulevard des Forges. Along this street, there are old building, café, and restaurant. There is also Monastery Ursulines that was established in the late of 1690's.

Along the way to Quebec City, you will find field and St. Lawrence River. You will follow Chemin du Roy route that is usually used for cycling.

Quebec City is the capital of Quebec province. It is the second largest city in Quebec after Montreal. Old Quebec is one part of Quebec City that received World Heritage Site from UNESCO in 1985. You will find it true that almost all houses and buildings in Old Quebec have a history touch.
Quartier du Petit Champlain is one of the roads in Old Quebec City that is crowded by the tourists. It is the oldest commercial district. You can find a lot of shops in this road, from the traditional to the modern one. It is the right place for you who like shopping.

The creativity is the main key of tourism object. Here you will find a lot of cafe and hotel with red roof. One said that this is the place fro "French Kiss" in America. It is right in front of Le Chateau Frontenac, the mascot of Old Quebec City. You can also find long alley that displays a lot of paintings of local artist.

Le Chateu Frontenac is the heart of the old city. It is on the valley that faces St. Lawrence River. You can find some castle in here. It resembles with the castle in Scotland since the workers were from Scotland. This castle is now operated as hotel which belongs to Fairmont hotel and resort.
The highest city in Old Quebec City is Citadelle. It is the residence of Governor General. Here you can find a history source that say, "The Seven Years War between France and Great Britain was drawing to a close in North America. All summer long, the British fleet had attempted to capture Quebec, but in vain. Despite the continuous bombardment, the capital of New France resisted the enemy.

In desperation, the English general, James Wolfe, decide to make a last attempt before the onset of the harsh Canadian winter. Under cover of night, about 4800 British soldiers succeeded in climbing the cliff and gaining a foothold on the Plains of Abraham, not far from here. As morning broke, the troops of the French general, the Marquis de Montcalm, were taken by surprise and regrouped hastily. Approximately 4500 French soldiers, Canadian militiamen and native allies move towards the plains to face Wolfe's army.

After a short battle, the British victory was to mark a decisive change in the history of the colony and North America."

This city is different from another city in Canada. The people here speak French instead of English.

Wee Beasties

I have a lot to catch up on. I have been on an island with no power, and definitely no internet! We did some diving, which is probably going to be another post on it's own, and spent some time on the beach hanging out, meeting people, and trying to stay mostly in the shade.

We arrived in Cambodia and spent some time at Angkor Wat (this will be a future post). Then we came to the south, where we took a rickety fishing boat for two hours to get to the island of Koh Rong.

We stayed in a wood and palm thatch bungalow, which wasn't exactly what you would call airtight. However, it had a beautiful view of the ocean and a nice porch from which to sit and stare at said ocean.

The first night we heard a rustling sound in the middle of the night and were not sure what it was, since there is no power. We got out our headlights and searched around but didn't find anything. The next day in the middle of the day I found that the bag of peanuts in my backpack was chewed into and eaten. Also my bar of soap had what looked like teethmarks in it. I assumed it was a rat.

The next night we decided to trap the animal, whatever it was. We put the peanuts in the trash and the trash in a large bucket, thinking that the animal would get trapped in and not be able to climb out of the bucket. THe next morning, the peanuts had been eaten, but there was no animal in the bucket.

So I went about my business and was about to use the bathroom when I heard a scrabbling behind the door. I swung it open and there was a HUGE lizard behind the door eating a centipede. It was pretty cool actually. The lizard must have been about a foot long and the centipede was probably almost a foot as well. They were battling it out and when I opened the door the centipede got away! Oops!

Now we are back on the mainland, trying to stay away from large lizards. More about this later.

Jumng Museum

The only outdoor sculpture museum in Taiwan, Juming Museum is located in picturesque Jinshan, an hour's drive from Taipei City. Its vast grounds (around 32,000 ping) feature spacious outdoor exhibition areas that allow visitors to get up close to the artworks on display. The architecture, landscape design, and gardening were all carried out or overseen by Juming himself.

I've always liked Juming's Tachi artwork. His work lets you feel a "chi" from within. And to be able to see thirty odd works by Juming displayed together at Tachi Plaza, you'll feel a majestic strength that seems--momentarily at least--to stop time in its tracks. The graceful poses transport you into the world of Tachi. Juming's simple and sharp slices create an abstract, unwavering motion in these poised sculptures. Their great force can be felt from any angle. The sculptures seem fused into the surrounding scenery; you forget yourself in this ultimate state of heaven, earth, landscape, object and man as one.

The Human Plaza gives off a different feel. It is Juming's latest creation, and takes bits and pieces from human lives. Seemingly minimal lines embody rich human emotion. Simple facial features and postures reflect our experiences and sentiments. We are given a tool to converse with the sculptures, reminisce, and realize "this is life."

Art doesn't have to be distant. On warm days you can soak you feet in the shallow water of the Wading Zone, and play amongst Juming's sculptures. The children love it. On the other side, the blooming lotuses also have some cooling effect.

With the blue sky, light breeze, sunshine, and distant mountains, the swans swim in leisure in the glistening Swan Pond. The children argue over whether the swans are real while the adults relax.

While nearly 80 percent of the sculptures displayed here are outside in natural surroundings, Juming Museum also has two interior exhibition spaces. The Museum Collection Hall features works by Buffet, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Milo, Liao Ji-chun, Kuo Po-chuan, Yang Shan-liang, Hung Jui-lin, and other sculptors. The Museum Main Hall features Juming's wooden carvings and plane pieces with a section devoted to works by Juming's two teachers, Lee Jing-chuan and Yang Yin-feng.

Juming's eldest son, Ju Chun, is also a renowned sculptor. His famous Zipper Series works can be see at the museum's outdoors exhibition space. Works such as Zipper Lotus Pond, Zipper Stone, and Zipper Tent add a sense of amusement to the museum.

The museum becomes even more alive with the Art Performance Zone, used by performance art groups. The combination of still and moving art gives visitors an enriched experience, as well as another reason for a repeat visit.

To bring the art back with you, pick up a souvenir at the gift shop. The two dining areas let visitors feast in a natural, artistic environment. Just sitting quietly in the gazebo or in the chairs by the sculptures is pure joy.

Visit the mountainside Juming Museum, roam through the artworks and endless green grass, experience the majestic presence of Juming's sculptures, and feel the confluence of nature and man. It is an unforgettable experience, and always well worth the trip. Drive or take the 8:40 am or 1:10 pm Art Bus from Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
