Dogs 101
Going for a run with your dog is a great way to keep you both in shape and enjoy the mountains. Exercising with your pet is not only fun, but since your dog needs to go out anyway it can be a great way to stay motivated. However, it is important to recognize that dogs can quickly overheat. Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat. Panting pulls evaporating moisture from their lungs to help cool the body, but on humid days this isn’t much relief. Their paws also allow for heat release but when the ground is hot they can be easily burned. Always keep these two points in mind when planning a route.Get it Done Early or Late
If you are going to run with your dog in the summer try to get out early in the morning or after the sun sets when it is cooler, so your dog doesn’t get overheated. Try to avoid asphalt and pavement as much as possible as they can get very hot and easily burn paws. If it is dry, dirt paths can also become quite warm and should be tested. One good way to check is to stand on the ground with your bare feet. If it feels too hot for you to stand on, it is also too hot for your dog.Hydration is King
Water is your dog’s best friend and yours. Make sure you are carrying enough water for you and your dog whenever you are outside. Water is crucial to keeping you both hydrated and prevent heat exhausting. Bring along a small cup for your dog to drink out of. It may seem easier to use your hands, but cups are cleaner and you’ll have more patience. If your dog isn’t used to drinking out of cup, start training them before you go by getting them to drink out of it at home. It can be very dangerous for them to drink out of creeks and puddles so keep clean water ready for them at all times.Break Time is Friend Time
Take frequent breaks when running in the heat and always try to find a shady spot. The shade will give you pet a nice respite from the sun and allow them to cool more quickly. It may break up your routine a bit, but the extra time petting and sitting with your dog will also be valuable time with your friend. If you dog seems to be panting too much or slowing down, these are great indicators a break is needed.Getting Outdoors
