The Younger Brothers' Fabulous Epics at the Peppermint Lounge

The Younger Brothers' roots go back to 1962, when Paul Yoculan formed The Fabulous Epics. In 1963 The Epics moved to New York City and became the house band at the world-famous Peppermint Lounge.

Years later Tom Hanks would call them "The Wonders" and tell their story in his film That Thing You Do.

Singer Paul Yoculan and Vinny Frazini formed The Fabulous Epics while living in Erie. The Band performed routinely at the Sons of Italy, which had a club at 621 West 18th Street. After a little over a year the Epics moved to New York, where they quickly won a slot as house band at The Peppermint Lounge.

The Peppermint Lounge opened in 1958 at 128 West 45th Street in Manhattan, New York. It had a lengthy mahogany bar running along one side, lots of mirrors and a dance floor at the back, with a capacity of just 178 people. The club had a gay and celebrity clientèle. Celebrities swarmed into the Peppermint Lounge: Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Liberace, Noël Coward, Frank Sinatra, Norman Mailer, Annette Funicello, even the elusive Greta Garbo. In 1964, the Beatles were filmed visiting the club during their first visit to the United States.

While the band was performing at the Peppermint Lounge on the evening of February 09, 1964, the Beatles had just finished their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and were eager to visit the Peppermint Lounge to see the Fabulous Epics, whom had developed a Beatles parody as part of its act. They had wigs cut out and fake noses on while playing fake instruments, including a wild stand-up bass with door knobs, a rear-view mirror, towel racks, and a built-in phone that rang with a long-distance call from England.

The Epics were aware that the Beatles might stop in, so they didn't want to do the spoof, worried that the Beatles may take offense, but the club owner insisted that they perform the act. Accompanied by DJ Murray the K. and a big press contingent, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon visited the club, George Harrison was ill. Club Security and Police cordoned off the whole club, and eventually the block as the word got out about the Beatles impending visit to the club. The Beatles arrived, watched the show and loved it, and from the audience gave the band the thumbs up.

The entire Fab Four visited the club again the following night, where they told the New York press that they liked the Younger Brothers, which made the papers the next day.

Ironically, the Epics didn't think much of the Beatles before meeting them, but after meeting them they learned two Beatles' songs and added them to their act.

The Fabulous Epics was the house band at the Peppermint Lounge for three years. During that period, they opened the American Hotel in Manhattan and performed for President John F. Kennedy at Carnegie Hall. The Fabulous Epics were the first show band of its kind, in history, to play Carnegie Hall. The Beatles were so entertained by the Fabulous Epics that word reached England about the Epics as the British Invasion continued. Groups like the Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Dave Clark Five, Gerry And The Pacemakers, all came to the lounge to sit and play with the Epics.

When the Fabulous Epics broke up, Paul Yoculan and Vinny Frazini, the band’s founders; with Vince Hopkins, formed the Younger Brothers at the suggestion of Warner Brothers, who had signed the Epics to a recording contract while they were playing at the Peppermint Lounge in the early 60s.

Walt Slivinski, with Neil Myers and Larry Parker, left the Epics and formed the band, Orange Colored Sky, which erroneously has been linked to the Fabulous Epics.

Around 1967, Walt Slivinski, along with Neil Myers and Larry Parker, moved to San Francisco looking to attract a broader audience. San Francisco was in the middle in of The Summer of Love and Psychedelic Music got top billing in the city. There, they formed the band, Larry Younger and The Epics, where they worked out of a club called "The Rock Garden" as an opening act for bands like Country Joe And The Fish, and Buffalo Springfield. Soon they would discover that San Francisco wasn’t their niche.

In 1968 the band opted to relocate to Southern California. Hitting the Los Angeles club circuit, they quickly attracted the attention of Universal Studios, which signed them to a recording contract, along with a brief cameo in the Don Knotts film, The Love God. They also appeared in TV commercials with Petula Clark, as well as The Steve Allen Show.

At Universal's insistence they adopted the name, Orange Colored Sky. Teaming the sextet with producer Norman Ratner, fronted by singer Larry Parker and keyboardist Walter Slivinski, who is credited with penning all 11 tracks, the band produced their first and only album.

“Musiques du silence” – Guillaume Coppola plays Federico Mompou, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Frédéric Chopin, Toru Takemitsu, Claude Debussy & Enrique Granados (HD 1080p)

French pianist Guillaume Coppola plays works by Federico Mompou, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Frédéric Chopin, Toru Takemitsu, Claude Debussy and Enrique Granados. The recital was recorded live at Jacques Prévert Theatre and Cinema, in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France, on December 1, 2015.

After five original and unanimously acclaimed CDs, Guillaume Coppola (b. 1979, Besançon, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France) has now "confirmed his prominent place at the heart of the young generation" (Diapason). In addition to a verve and an expressive depth that make each of his performances keenly anticipated, his authenticity and simplicity have won the hearts of music-lovers.

His eclectic and eloquent discography – encompassing Liszt (2009), Granados (2012), Poulenc (2013, with baritone Marc Mauillon), Schubert (2014) and Brahms-Schubert (2016, four hands with Hervé Billaut) – has been enthusiastically welcomed by the world's press, with every release garnering the highest recognition: Diapason d'Or, ffff from Télérama, Selection from Le Monde, Les Echos, the Académie Charles Cros, five stars from BBC Music Magazine, "Maestro" from Pianiste, four stars from Classica, four stars from Pianist and so on.

To date, he has performed in some 20 countries, appearing at prestigious European venues such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Prague Rudolfinum, the Liège Philharmonie, the Reduta in Bratislava and the Liepaja International Piano Stars Festival, as well as in Asia and South America. In France too, of course: at the Musée d'Orsay, the Salle Pleyel, the Piano Festival of La Roque-d'Anthéron, the Folle Journée de Nantes, the Festival de l'Orangerie de Sceaux, Piano aux Jacobins, the Paris Chopin Festival, Solistes aux Serres d'Auteuil, the Radio France Montpellier Festival, the Lille Piano Festival, the Rendez-vous de Rochebonne, the Nohant Festival, the Auditorium de Dijon, the Auditorium de Bordeaux, MC2 Grenoble, the Dinard Festival and more.

In addition to solo recitals and concertos – the latter with the Orchestre National de Montpellier, the Saint-Etienne Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche-Comté and the Orchestre Symphonique de l'Opéra de Toulon, under the baton of Arie van Beek, Enrique Mazzola, Laurent Campellone and Maxime Tortelier, among others – chamber music allows him to engage in fruitful collaboration with the violinists Régis Pasquier, Patrice Fontanarosa and Nicolas Dautricourt, the cellist Antoine Pierlot, the Voce, Parisii, Debussy and Alfama String Quartets.

While he occasionally plays four-hands and two-piano repertoire with Bruno Rigutto or David Bismuth, he has for several years performed as a duo with Hervé Billaut. Invited to accompany the baritone Marc Mauillon in a vocal recital, he also appears with the Latvian National Choir, Spirito/Britten Choir, the Bordeaux Opera Chorus under the direction of Māris Sirmais, Nicole Corti, Salvatore Caputo.

Guillaume is a generous musician who takes every opportunity to perform for audiences in prisons, hospitals and retirement homes. He participates in productions combining words and music, along with Marie-Christine Barrault, Didier Sandre, François Castang and Marie-Sophie Ferdane. His collaborations with composers have included giving the premieres of works by Marc Monnet (Paris, 2015), Isabel Pires (who dedicated a piece to him), Gao Ping, Steven Stucky and Sylvain Griotto.

Guillaume studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, in the class of Bruno Rigutto. Having taken first prizes in piano and chamber music, he proceeded to hone his skills in numerous masterclasses in France and abroad, with Jean-Claude Pennetier, Dmitri Bashkirov, Leon Fleisher and others. At the outset of his career, he received valuable support from sources such as the Radio France Génération Jeunes Interprètes programme, the Lions Clubs, the Cziffra and Bourgeois Foundations, and internationally from the Prix Déclic of the Institut Français and the New Masters on Tour series.

Happy Birthday & Merry Christmas: The Five Modern Royals Born on 25 December

For whatever reason, it seems relatively rare that people are born on 25 December. When one takes a look at the Gotha, there is an even smaller number of individuals who arrived on Christmas Day. Currently, there are only four princes and one princess who share this unique distinction: the eldest was born in 1934, and the youngest arrived in 1991.

1. Prince Wolfgang von und zu Liechtenstein (*1934)

Prince Wolfgang of Liechtenstein in 2018
H.S.H. Prince Wolfgang Johannes Baptist Johannes Evangelist Ildefons Franz de Paula Josef Maria von und zu Liechtenstein was born on 25 December 1934 at Graz; he was the fourth and last child of Prince Karl Aloys (1878-1955) and Princess Elisabeth (1894-1962; née Princess von Urach), who married in 1921. In July 1970, Prince Wolfgang wed Countess Gabrielle Basselet de la Rosée (b.1949), the daughter of Count Franz Xaver Basselet de La Rosée (1906-1984) and Princess Eleonore von Lobkowicz (1916-2000). Wolfgang and Gabrielle have two children: Princess Stephanie (b.1976) and Prince Leopold (b.1978).

2. Princess Alexandra of Kent, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy (*1936)

Princess Alexandra, The Hon. Lady Ogilvy, in 2010
H.R.H. Princess Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel of Kent was born on 25 December 1936 at London; she was the second child and only daughter of Prince George (1902-1942), Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina (1906-1968; née Princess of Greece and Denmark), who married in 1934. In April 1963, Alexandra wed the Hon. Angus Ogilvy (1928-2004; later made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, and then a member of the Privy Counsel). Angus was the son of David Ogilvy (1893-1968), 7th Earl of Airlie, and Lady Alexandra Coke (1891-1984). Alexandra and Angus had two children: James (b.1964) and Marina (b.1966). Through her father the Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra is a first cousin of H.M. The Queen (b.1926); though her mother Princess Marina, Alexandra is a first cousin once-removed of H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (b.1921).

3. Fürst Alexander of Schaumburg-Lippe (*1958)

Fürst Alexander zu Schaumburg-Lippe
H.S.H. Prince Ernst August Alexander Christian Viktor Hubert zu Schaumburg-Lippe was born on 25 December 1958 at Düsseldorf. He was the second son and last child of Fürst Philipp-Ernst (1928-2003) and Fürstin Eva-Benita (1927-2013; née Baroness von Tiele-Winckler), who married in 1955. In August 1993, Alexander married Princess Marie-Luise "Lily" zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (b.1972); the couple had one son, Hereditary Prince Heinrich-Donatus (b.1994), before divorcing in 2002. In June 2007, Fürst Alexander married Dr Nadja Anna Zsoeks (b.1975); the couple had two daughters, Princess Friederike (b.2008) and Princess Philomena (b.2011), before divorcing in 2018. Alexander is the Head of the Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe.

4. Prince Bernhard of Orange-Nassau, van Vollenhoven (*1969)

Prince Bernhard of Orange-Nassau, van Vollenhoven, in 2015
H.H. Prince Bernhard Lucas Emmanuel of Orange-Nassau, van Vollenhoven, was born on 25 December 1969 at Nijmegen. Bernhard is the second son of the four sons of Princess Margriet of the Netherlands (b.1943) and Pieter van Vollenhoven Jr. (b.1939), who wed in 1967. In July 2000, Bernhard married Annette Sekrève (b.1972); the couple have three children: Isabella (b.2002), Samuel (b.2004), and Benjamin (b.2008). Prince Bernhard is the first cousin of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

5. Hereditary Prince Carl-Anton zu Waldeck und Pyrmont (*1991)

Photograph © Elmar Schulten
H.S.H. Hereditary Prince Carl-Anton Christian Gustav Clemens Alexander of Waldeck and Pyrmont was born on 25 December 1991 at Arolsen. Carl-Anton is the eldest of the three sons of Fürst Wittekind (b.1936) and Fürstin Cecilie (b.1956; née Countess von Goëß-Saurau). In 2013, Carl-Anton sustained serious injuries during a swim in the River Main; this incident led to the prince becoming a paraplegic. In 2016, Carl-Anton succeeded his father as Executive Chairman of the Princely Foundation of the House of Waldeck and Pyrmont.

+

Therefore on 25 December 2019, five members of the first section of the Gotha will celebrate their birthdays. Prince Wolfgang of Liechtenstein will turn eighty-five. Princess Alexandra of Kent will turn eighty-three. Fürst Alexander of Schamburg-Lippe will turn sixty-one. Prince Bernhard of Orange-Nassau, van Vollenhoven, will turn fifty. The youngest of the group, Hereditary Prince Carl-Anton of Waldeck and Pyrmont will turn twenty-eight.

We wish them a Happy Birthday and a Merry Christmas!
