CYPRUS THE ONLY EU STATE WITH HEAVY TRUCKS REGISTRATION GROWTH

in-cyprus 24 July 2020 - by Annie Charalambous

Cyprus was the only EU member state to post growth last month in the registration of heavy trucks, according to figures provided by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Specifically, there were 96 registrations of heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) of 16t and over last month, compared to only three in June 2019.

In addition, 106 such registrations were recorded between January and June 2020 compared to 16 the same period last year.

By contrast, demand for these heavy commercial vehicles within the EU was severely hit (-55.6%) with Estonia and Latvia recording percentage losses of more than 80%.

The four major EU markets also posted negative results, especially Germany (-57.4%), Spain (-55.7%) and Italy (-51.8%).

At the same time, only one in 238 citizens in Cyprus buys a brand new car, compared to Luxembourg’s one in 28, Belgium’s one in 52 and Germany’s one in 68, according to ACEA.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH CAUTIONS PUBLIC AS COVID-19 STILL ACTIVE

in-cyprus 23 July 2020 - by Maria Bitar

Based on cases of Covid-19 in people who showed symptoms without having had contact with a confirmed case or had any recent travel history which were identified in the community mainly in the province of Limassol, the Ministry of Health expresses strong concern and recommends caution reminding the public that the virus is still active.

The relaxation observed in relation to the observance of the measures can cause derailment and overturn the positive epidemiological indicators.

“We all have a responsibility to remain vigilant and disciplined, faithfully adhering to measures of personal protection and social distancing, in order to prevent a new outbreak of cases in the coming months”, the Ministry of Health said.

POLICE ARREST MAN IN CONNECTION WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER IN PAPHOS

in-cyprus 23 July 2020 -  by Annie Charalambous

Police on Thursday arrested a 38-year-old man from Russia who holds a Greek passport in connection with the attempted murder against a 46-year-old foreign man in Paphos a week ago.

The victim, who is a permanent resident of Paphos, is in serious condition in the coastal town’s General Hospital.

He has knife with wounds in the abdomen, bruising on the arm and mouth area, a perforation of the small intestine and kidney failure. The suspect is well known to the police.

The 46-year-old told police that an unknown person to him had stabbed him in Kato Paphos, at Apostolou Pavlou Avenue, in the early hours of last Thursday.

The victim also said that he was on foot at the time and tried to stop a car so as to catch a ride.  A dark coloured car with unknown registration plates had stopped and the co-driver got out and allegedly asked him for money.

The 46-year-old refused to give him any, an argument ensued and according to the complainant the unknown man attacked him with a knife and injured him grievously. The co-river then got back in the car which sped away.

The 46-year-old also told police that he then continued walking to his home and did not visit a hospital immediately because he thought his injuries were not that serious. But on Saturday morning, after his condition deteriorated, he decided to seek medical help.

WITH NO BRITS, CASH-STRAPPED ALGARVE FIGHTS FOR SURVIVAL

In his near-empty pub in the Algarve in southern Portugal, Samuel Tilley is fuming that coronavirus regulations in his home country Britain are keeping tourists away, further jeopardizing an already gloomy summer season.

Usually packed with tourists at this time of the year, Vilamoura is quiet, leaving bar staff at Tilley’s O’Neills pub without much to do but brood over Britain’s decision to leave Portugal off a list of more than 50 countries safe enough for travel without restrictions.

“It was very shocking. I don’t believe there’s any logic behind it,” Tilley said, while keeping an eye out for the rare thirsty customer walking in to have a refreshing pint by the harbour.

“There are some wonderful people here in the Algarve and beyond and I feel this decision by the British government really hurt them.”

Portugal initially won praise for its quick response to the pandemic but a persistent count of several hundred new cases per day concentrated in and around Lisbon in the past two months has worried authorities at home and abroad, leading Britain and other European nations to impose restrictions on travel from the southern European nation.

Last year, Portugal welcomed about 2 million Britons, with 64% of them heading to the sunny Algarve, famed for its sandy beaches and golf courses. So far in 2020, only 92,000 Britons have made it the region.

Sunbeds are left empty and lonely waiters stand outside restaurants with menus in hand but no holidaymakers to speak to.

“It used to be so busy that you would stand shoulder to shoulder,” Welsh tourist Nadine said as she walked around nearly empty streets in nearby Albufeira.

Eliseu Correia, head of the Algarve-based destination management company EC Travel, said not being included in the British safe travel list had been devastating for his business, with revenues dropping around 60% this year compared to 2019.

“It is obviously a tremendous hit on everybody,” he said. “We had no revenue in March, April, May, June…so we were counting on that.”

SILVER LINING?

Britons pumped around 3.2 billion euros into Portugual’s economy last year and without that cash, the Algarve’s businesses, which mainly rely on the busy summer months to make ends meet, will find themselves in a tight spot.

The travel list, which allows holidaymakers to dodge a 14-day quarantine upon returning home, is expected to be reviewed by next Monday but, even if Portugal is put on the list then, it might be too late.

“It is obvious part of the damage can’t be reversed,” said Eliderico Viegas, President of Algarve’s AHETA hotel association. “Many people have already opted for other destinations.”

On average, the Algarve’s hotels, which are usually fully booked in July and August, are currently surviving with only 40% occupancy, according to AHETA.

The Algarve saw its number of registered unemployed in June rise 231% compared to the same period last year, increasing from around 8,000 to more than 26,000 people.

Most relied on the so-called seasonal jobs, which were wiped out as demand collapsed and businesses closed doors.

The government has acknowledged the Algarve needs urgent help, and announced on Tuesday it would spend 300 million euros to support its struggling economy.

Francisco Melo, who runs boat tours along the coast, says his business is making 20% less compared to 2019.

But there is a silver lining to how quiet things are, which he hopes will in turn help bring tourists back:

“Things are hard but the sea is full of life, with dolphins, tuna, horse mackerel. We have never seen the sea like this.”

BASES 84 SQUADRON HELPED FIGHT FIRES LAST YEAR BY DROPPING 200 TONNES OF WATER

Cyprus Mail 23 July 2020 - by Annette Chrysostomou

The unprecedented nature of the Covid-19 outbreak has put every department within the British Forces Cyprus (BFC) under more pressure but this has not stopped 84 squadron working alongside the Republic’s fire services to provide key support, the British Forces announced on Thursday.

BFC’s command fire officer Alex Middleton said there had been high volumes of fires so far this year and pointed to the squadron’s work in tackling many of those blazes.

Much of the success in fighting fires as they continue to break out islandwide, is down to the continuous training the crew undertake and according to the commanding officer, squadron leader Alan Ross, it is essential to ensure his team understand the working practices of their Cypriot counterparts.

Last month, the squadron took part in the Icarus exercise, Cyprus’ annual fire-fighting exercise in the Troodos mountains.

Part of it involved simulating wildfires, which were extinguished by airborne crews.

“Icarus 2020 provided a brilliant opportunity for 84 Squadron to meet and train with our Cypriot friends in the Cyprus police, national guard and forestry commission,” Ross said.

“The exercise happens once a year at the start of the firefighting season so we can all refresh our operating procedures as part of the national response plan and build on strengthening relationships forged over the previous years.”

In preparation for the fire season, during the cooler periods, 84 Squadron held weekly meetings to plan sorties to ensure they maintained key skills.

According to the announcement, this proved highly-successful last year after the squadron battled multiple wildfires and assisted Cyprus by dropping more than 200 tonnes of water in support of firefighting efforts.

“84 Squadron’s firefighting capability could not be achieved without our civil service staff, operations assistants, military aircrew and most importantly, our civilian engineering team pulling together and working around the clock, truly delivering a whole-force approach to protect people and save lives,” he added.

“I am very proud of the hard work and effort by everyone on the 84 Squadron team, the results speak for themselves.”

OPERATION AGAINST ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME, WASTE TREATMENT AND RECYCLING FACILITIES

23/7/2020

A coordinated operation of checks on waste treatment and recycling facilities for electrical and electronic equipment was carried out yesterday by members of the Police, in cooperation with officers of the Department of the Environment, within the framework of the Joint Days of Action project, the EMPACT programme of the European Union and Europol, to tackle organised, cross-border crime.

The operation was carried out with the aim of tackling environmental crime and the illegal trafficking of recycled electrical and electronic equipment, which after processing in recycling plants, is exported to foreign countries. During the operation, four waste treatment and recycling facilities for cars and metals were checked in Limassol province.

Irregularities and deficiencies were found in one of the premises in relation to the treatment of copper waste and the burning of cables, with the result that the officials of the Department of the Environment proceeded to issue an out-of-court fine to the Directorate of the premises, for the amount of EUR 2,000. In the other three premises, it was found that waste management was carried out normally, but one of them did not have a permit for the treatment of computer waste.

During the inspection of the workers in the four premises, it was found that three persons, third-country nationals, were working illegally in one of them, in breach of the conditions of their temporary residence permit in the Republic. A case of illegal employment and illegal employment is being investigated against the three, as well as their employer, respectively, with the Polemidi Police Station continuing the examinations.

Yesterday's operation was carried out by the Crime Detection Department – TD (Operations), Police Headquarters and the Immigration and Immigration Service – YAM, the Limassol Police Directorate, in coordination with the Department of the Environment.
