FRANCE'S MACRON WANTS EU ACTION, SANCTIONS OVER MEDITERRANEAN VIOLATIONS

in-cyprus 23 July 2020 - by Annie Charalambous

France‘s president on Thursday said it would be a serious error by the European Union to not respond to provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean and said he wanted more sanctions on those who violated Greek and Cypriot maritime space.

Emmanuel Macron’s comments come after Turkey’s navy on Tuesday issued an advisory for seismic surveys in an area of sea between Cyprus and Crete, a move Greece said was an attempt by Ankara to encroach on its continental shelf.

“In this part of the Mediterranean, which is vital for our two countries, energy and security issues are essential. What’s at stake is a power struggle in particular of Turkey and Russia which are asserting themselves more and more and in the face of which the EU is still doing too little,” Macron told reporters alongside his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades.

“It would be a serious mistake to leave our security in the Mediterranean in the hands of other actors. This is not an option for Europe and it is not something that France will let happen.”

The European Union has already imposed some sanctions on Turkey over drilling activities in the eastern Mediterranean, but Macron said more sanctions would be needed to stop the violations.

“I stand fully behind Cyprus and Greece in the face of the Turkish violations of their sovereignty. It is unacceptable that the maritime space of (EU) member states be violated and threatened. Those who are doing that must be sanctioned.”

Macron, who has criticised Turkey for months over Ankara’s role in Libya, also said the EU should push for sanctions over those involved in the north African country’s conflict.

“It is necessary to obtain a ceasefire and begin a real dynamic towards a political solution to the Libyan conflict,” he said.

LIMASSOL SET TO INSTAL WATER REFILL STATION, COMPANY LOOKING FOR FUNDS FOR MORE

Cyprus Mail 23 July 2020 - by Annette Chrysostomou

A new fundraiser by Limassol-based environmental organisation Let’s Make Cyprus Green aims to offer everyone an alternative to single-use plastic by installing water refill stations around the town.

The NGO has the permission to install one refill station on the Germasoyia waterfront, and Let’s Make Cyprus Green is looking for sponsors to install this one and more.

“Every water station will carry advertising and raise funds for more stations across the island. We already have the agreement and/or interest of several municipalities. What we need is seed-funding to start the process,” the NGO said.

Across the world, people buy a million plastic bottles every minute and the number is rising. Only a very small percentage are recycled; most are dumped.

Every year, between eight and 10 billion kilos of plastic waste ends up in the ocean, where it breaks up into small pieces that can no longer be recovered. The Mediterranean already holds up to 10 million plastic particles every square kilometre.

“Please help us tackle this crisis. Support our project to install water refill stations, bringing free, filtered and chilled drinking water to public spaces in Cyprus,” Let’s Make Cyprus Green said.

“Filtered tap water is purer and safer than water in disposable plastic bottles. Make a habit of bringing a reusable bottle whenever you go out. You will save money while helping the environment.”

MAN JAILED FOR TWO YEARS FOR TRANSPORTING MIGRANTS

Cyprus Mail 23 July 2020 - by Nick Theodoulou

A 20-year-old man was sentenced on Thursday to two years in prison for smuggling migrants into the country.

He was sentenced for smuggling migrants in violation of the United Nations convention against international organised crime, for which he got the maximum sentence of two years.

As stated before the Paphos court, the 20-year-old drove a boat – without any experience – and on December 22, 2019, transported 34 migrants to the island.

The court took into account the increased risk to the lives of those onboard and noted the many lives lost at sea in such incidents.

His defence attorneys, Maria and Elias Siatolias, referred to the mitigation of the 20-year-old’s sentence based on certain criteria. They argued his confession, cooperation with police, young age and personal details be taken into account.

The court, however, in announcing the sentence referred to the frequency of such crimes – for profit – and the dangers involved in the process.

The court also noted that each case is judged on its own but noted the defendant’s young age and previously clean criminal record.

MINISTRY ORDERS INVESTIGATION AFTER PARKED BUSES DO NOT REMAIN STATIONARY

Cyprus Mail 23 July 2020 - by Annette Chrysostomou

The transport ministry has ordered an investigation into the Cyprus Public Transport company, the new bus company operating in Nicosia and Larnaca, after several buses reportedly started moving when they were supposed to be parked, in one case causing a fatal accident.

On July 13, a 52-year-old bus driver and father of three was killed by his bus in an incident that took place at a terminal in Engomi.

Police said the driver had got off his bus — for reasons that are being investigated — when the vehicle moved forward after he reportedly failed to engage the handbrake. The driver tried to stop the bus but was crushed.

Workers’ union PEO at the time called for an investigation into the incident, noting that the company for which the driver worked had been operating for just over a week.

Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos requested the investigation after a driverless bus moved backwards at the Anthoupolis bus station before stopping at a fence, the third such incident after the new system started its operation on July 5, and questioned the level of training of the drivers.

The company responded by issuing leaflets with instructions for drivers on how to use the parking brakes and how to immobilise the buses.

It also announced it will provide additional training for the drivers.

CEO of Cyprus Public Transport Julio Tironi said the company has transferred 500 employees from the old bus companies, and is working on ironing out the problems, which includes having discussions regarding working hours and conditions with unions.

“500 human beings have their problems, and we are addressing them. It cannot happen in a week. We are asking for a bit of patience from the public,” he told the Cyprus Mail.

EVENT PLANNERS PROTEST EXTENSION OF COVID-19 RESTRICTIVE MEASURES

in-cyprus 23 July 2020 - by Maria Bitar

Event planners have strongly protested the government’s decision to carry on with Covid-19 restrictive measures in regard to weddings and other mass gathering events.

The planners staged a loud protest outside the Presidential Palace on Wednesday afternoon, shouting that the prolonged measures will lead to their financially ruin.

The protest followed an announcement by the Ministry of Health that based on the recommendations of the World Health Organisation and the European Commission the planning of mass gatherings should not be allowed even in the period starting from September 1st onward.

The Ministry has made it clear that the epidemiological picture presented internationally does not currently allow for the planning of events that involve the participation of a large number of people especially if they concern concerts, festivals and weddings.

The large number of people attending makes the supervision of hygiene and distancing measures impossible, the Ministry also said.

CHINA LAUNCHES INDEPENDENT, UNMANNED MARS MISSION

Cyprus Mail 23 July 2020 - by Reuters News Service

China successfully launched an unmanned probe to Mars on Thursday in its first independent mission to another planet, a bid for global leadership in space and a display of its technological prowess and ambition.

China’s largest carrier rocket, the Long March 5 Y-4, blasted off with the probe at 12:41 p.m. (0441 GMT) from Wenchang Space Launch Centre on the southern island of Hainan.

The probe is expected to reach Mars in February where it will attempt to deploy a rover to explore the planet for 90 days.

If successful, the Tianwen-1, or “Questions to Heaven”, which is the name of a poem written two millennia ago, will make China the first country to orbit, land and deploy a rover in its inaugural mission.

There will be challenges ahead as the craft nears Mars, Liu Tongjie, spokesman for the mission, told reporters ahead of the launch.

“When arriving in the vicinity of Mars, it is very critical to decelerate,” he said.

“If the deceleration process is not right, or if flight precision is not sufficient, the probe would not be captured by Mars,” he said, referring to gravity on Mars taking the craft down to the surface.

Liu said the probe would orbit Mars for about two and a half months and look for an opportunity to enter its atmosphere and make a soft landing.

“Entering, deceleration and landing (EDL) is a very difficult (process). We believe China’s EDL process can still be successful, and the spacecraft can land safely,” Liu said.

Eight spacecraft – American, European and Indian – are either orbiting Mars or on its surface with other missions underway or planned.

The United Arab Emirates launched a mission to Mars on Monday, an orbiter that will study the planet’s atmosphere.

The United States has plans to send a probe in coming months that will deploy a rover called Perseverance, the biggest, heaviest, most advanced vehicle sent to the Red Planet by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

China’s probe will carry several scientific instruments to observe the planet’s atmosphere and surface, searching for signs of water and ice.

China previously made a Mars bid in 2011 with Russia, but the Russian spacecraft carrying the probe failed to exit the Earth’s orbit and disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean.

A fourth planned launch for Mars, the EU-Russian ExoMars, was postponed for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic and technical issues.
