Late last week, members of the royal families of Greece and Hannover as well as of the princely house of Monaco were present at St. Moritz for the wedding of Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos II (b.1985) and Russian businesswoman Darya "Dasha" Alexandrovna Zhukova (b.1981). The groom is the son of Philippos Niarchos (b.1954) and his third (and former) wife Victoria Guinness (b.1960) of the Irish brewing dynasty. Stavros II is the paternal grandson of shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos (1909 - 1996) and his third wife Eugenia Livanos (1927 - 1970). His maternal grandparents are Patrick Benjamin Guinness (1931 - 1965) and Baroness Dolores von Fürstenberg-Hedringen (1936 - 2012). Dasha Zhukova is the former wife of Russian-Israeli billionaire Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich (b.1966), to whom she was married from 2008 until 2017. Stavros and Dasha were civilly married in Paris during October 2019. Their religious ceremony took place on Friday in the Hotel Kulm at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

BREAKING: The Queen Issues Definitive Statement on The Sussex Situation

Today, 18 January, the Queen has issued a very important statement on the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The couple are essentially withdrawing into private life. They will maintain their patronages and charity associations. They will be reimbursing for the refurbishments at Frogmore Cottage, which will remain as their home in the UK. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer receive public funds from the Sovereign Grant. They will not use their HRH titles, as they will not be carrying out public duties. Amazing. Historic. Shocking.

Here are the words of Her Majesty:
Statement from HM The Queen

Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.
Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.
I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.
I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.

It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.

A statement was also provided from Buckingham Palace.

Statement from Buckingham Palace
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties.

With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.
The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.
Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security.
This new model will take effect in the Spring of 2020.

You may be curious as to what all of this really means ( - I was!). Let us try to work through some of the issues brought up by this statement, and provide answers where possible.

The couple will legally remain Their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They have not been stripped of the HRH style; they are simply choosing not to use it. Harry and Meghan will remain as members of the British Royal Family; they simply will not be working members. The Sussexes will not be receiving money from the Sovereign Grant anymore; this does not preclude them from receiving funding from the Prince of Wales via the income he receives from the Duchy of Cornwall, as this is Charles' personal income. Indeed, it has been confirmed now that Harry and Meghan will receive some funds from his father in the same way that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge receive funding from the Prince of Wales through the Duchy of Cornwall.

The Sussexes will no longer carry out any royal duties after this plan is put into action. None whatsoever. There will be no more tours. However, this new plan does not come into effect until the Spring of 2020. Therefore, the Sussexes will still be carrying out royal engagements that were already scheduled up until the Spring of this year. Harry will no longer be the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. The couple will privately maintain their associations with their patronages. However, according to royal reporter Omid Scobie, the Sussexes will "still happily attend engagements for the Queen (such as Trooping the Colour)." Harry and Meghan will still be in their positions as President and Vice President, respectively, of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

Harry will be giving up his military duties. He will no longer be the Captain General of the Royal Marines, a role that he took over from his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh. All of Harry's honorary military titles and associations will end after Spring 2020. According to Chris Ship of ITV, Lord West, the former Head of the Navy, has released this comment: "The whole situation is extremely sad, after his splendid service in the military, that he will now no longer be involved with the military in the UK."

Harry and Meghan will repay from their own funds the money that was used to refurbish Frogmore Cottage. The couple will still retain use of Frogmore Cottage after Spring 2020. They will pay for its running costs and upkeep. Yet, the Sussexes will be spending the majority of their time in North America: Canada, to be precise.

Come Spring of 2020, the couple will be known formally as Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. It is possible that in private life they will simply be known as Harry and Meghan Sussex or as Harry and Meghan Mountbatten-Windsor. More aspects of the Sussexes new life as private members of the British Royal Family, who will reside the majority of the year in Canada, will become known as time goes by. The Royal Family will review this plan and its outcomes in 2021 and make adjustments as necessary then.

On Sunday, 19 January, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave brief remarks to an ITV reporter: "I think the whole country will want to join in wishing them [Harry and Meghan] the very best. As I said before, that I was sure, the Royal family has been around a very long time, and [that it] would find a way forward, and I'm sure that it will."

Sauli Zinovjev: Un Grande Sospiro – Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Klaus Mäkelä (HD 1080p)

Under the baton of the young Finnish conductor and cellist Klaus Mäkelä, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Kymi Sinfonietta perform Sauli Zinovjev's Un Grande Sospiro. Recorded at Salle Métropole, Lausanne, Switzerland, on December 11, 2019.

A composition at its best has everything. The entire life in a single moment. This is how composer Sauli Zinovjev sees it.

Since graduating from the Sibelius-Academy he has been focusing mainly on orchestral music with commissions and performances by distinguished orchestras such as the Finnish and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras, Orchestra de Chambre de Lausanne and most important Finnish orchestras in collaboration with some of the frontline conductors and soloists such as Klaus Mäkelä and Pekka Kuusisto. Zinovjev's most recent works include a Piano Concerto for pianist Vikingur Olafsson commissioned by Finnish and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras to be premiered in 2020 and currently Zinovjev is composing a new orchestral piece to be premiered in the season 2020-2021.

Zinovjev composes music that conveys vast emotions. The kind of music which also made him a composer. Until the age of sixteen, he played the guitar in a rock band and skateboarded. Then he saw a clip online with György Cziffra performing Liszt.

"It was as if wallpaper had been torn off the wall revealing a window to an open landscape. The euphoria and the virtuoso performance left a fanatic impression on me. To have the ability to inject so much art into a single moment. The entire spectrum of life."

Zinovjev uses classical music to make his view of the world intelligible. To convey it – life – to others.

Over the past week, Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia (b.1936) and her youngest daughter Christina Oxenberg have been going back and forth through Balkan media outlets over a rather personal issue: who was Christina's *real* father? Christina has stated that when she was a teenager, her mother Elizabeth told Christina that Christina's biological dad was actually John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917 - 1963), the 35th President of the United States of America. Elizabeth has stated that she never told her daughter any such thing. Christina insists that her mum did, indeed! So, let us look at the facts...

Mr. Howard Oxenberg in 1960.
The Oxenberg/Karageorgevich marriage license: riddled with errors.
On 21 January 1961, the attractive twenty-five year-old Elizabeth married Howard Oxenburg (1919 - 2010), who was seventeen years her senior, at Manassas, Virginia. The couple had been an item for over a year; indeed, the news rags had incorrectly reported that the couple had eloped in either June or July  of 1960. Needless to say, Elizabeth's parents Prince Regent Paul of Yugoslavia and Princess Olga (née Greece and Denmark) were not thrilled with the match; they had hoped that their daughter would find a nice royal man with whom to settle down. Furthermore, although Howard was well to do, being a successful clothes manufacturer, he had only recently divorced from his first wife, with whom he had children. Thus, the Yugoslav royal couple were rather let down at their daughter's (first) marriage.

This article appeared in The Kansas City Times of Kansas City, Missouri, on 23 September 1961.
Almost eight months to the day after their wedding, Elizabeth of Yugoslavia and Howard Oxenberg welcomed the arrival of their first child, Catherine Oxenberg, who was born in New York City on 22 September 1961.

Early in the following year, 1962, the following blurbs started appearing in the American press:

The Oxenbergs and the Kennedys hanging out in Palm Beach in early 1962.
This article appeared in the Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia, on 18 February 1962.
The Oxenbergs dance the night away at White House dinner with Jackie and JFK.
This article appeared in the Pittsburgh Press of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 18 February 1962.
Articles reported that Howard and Elizabeth Oxenberg (née Yugoslavia) had spent a weekend with President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy at Palm Beach in early 1962. The Oxenbergs had also attended a dinner party hosted by the Kennedys at the White House, where Elizabeth was noted as "slim, sun-tanned, [and] brown-haired" and being "one of the most stunning" guests of the soirée. Aside from the trip to Palm Beach and the party at the White House, there are no other reports of the Oxenbergs and the Kennedys commingling at the beginning of 1962. However, this does not mean that there could not have been private social visits.

Baby Oxenberg/Karageorgevich # 2 is on the way!
This article appeared in The Salt Lake Tribune of Salt Lake City, Utah, on 29 May 1962.
Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia arrives back in N.Y.C. from Milan to prepare (again) for impending motherhood.
In 1962, Howard and Elizabeth Oxenberg were living at 983 Park Avenue in New York City. As was the norm, Elizabeth spent a fair part of that year traveling to the Caribbean and Europe on her Greek diplomatic passport. On 2 February, she arrived back in New York City after a vacation to Nassau, Bahamas. On 1 April, Elizabeth was back in the Big Apple after a hop over to London. On 7 May, the princess again returned to NYC from another trip to Nassau. On 29 May 1962, Howard and/or Elizabeth (via the media) let it be known that they were expecting their second child. On 16 August, Elizabeth came back to her Park Avenue apartment after flying in from Milan. She had been visiting her parents Prince Paul and Princess Olga at their villa in Florence. After her Italian interlude, the by-then quite pregnant princess stayed put in the States.

Howard and Elizabeth Oxenberg
Elizabeth and Howard Oxenberg spent the first weekend of November 1962 at Templeton, the Long Island home of Winston and C. Z. Guest. At this point, Elizabeth was expecting to give birth in about six weeks ( - she had to wait eight). Among the nearly sixty guests of the Guests were the following: Elsa Maxwell (who wrote all about it later), British film director Peter Glenville, British actress Margaret Leighton, American actor/painter/writer/jack-of-all-trades Anthony Quinn, and Reed Vreeland (Diana's husband). In her column of 8 November, Elsa Maxwell recalled that Elizabeth was the most attractive girl at the party - "without question." Howard Oxenberg was "a handsome, charming, and romantic man." Elsa and Elizabeth chatted about Elizabeth's only surviving brother, Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia, whom Elsa had seen in France the previous month. Alexander had asked Elsa, "Do you see much of my sister Elizabeth, or doesn't she go anywhere?" Elsa replied: "What do you mean by asking if Elizabeth goes anywhere? Do you mean is she bienvenue, is she well-received in New York because she married a clothing manufacturer?" When Elsa told Elizabeth of this conversation, Elizabeth remarked that her brother was "a terrible snob." Elsa went on to gently chide Elizabeth about the fact that Elizabeth's sister-in-law and Alexander's wife, Maria Pia of Savoy, had not attended the April in Paris Ball. Elsa had been expecting to see Pia there. Elizabeth responded with a droll: "I can't be responsible for what a sister-in-law does. I am only responsible for myself." The last remark of Elizabeth is rather telling, in hindsight. She could not possibly know that her sister-in-law Pia of Savoy would give birth in just five months time to a second set of twins; the father of these twins was not Elizabeth's brother/Pia's husband Prince Alexander. Alas, that is another story of complicated paternity.

Christina Oxenberg is born.
This article appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 9 January 1963.
On 27 December 1962, Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, Mrs. Howard Oxenberg, gave birth to her second daughter, Christina, in New York City. Princess Olga of Yugoslavia had flown in from Europe to be with her daughter and to be present at her granddaughter's birth. Queen Mother Helen of Romania (née Greece and Denmark) was Christina's godmother: Queen Mother Helen and Christina's grandmother Princess Olga were first cousins.

By 1966, the Oxenberg/Yugoslavia marriage had run its course. Over the years, gossip had it that the couple was frequently on the verge of divorce. Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia and Mr. Howard Oxenberg went their separate ways: she moved to Chelsea with her daughters, and he remained in New York. Both Elizabeth and Howard remarried and divorced...several times.

Now, we will fast forward to the present day. Christina Oxenberg is an author who lives in the United States. She has written several books: Taxi (1986), the novel Royal Blue (1998; republished in 2014), a compilation of short stories entitled When In Doubt...Double The Dosage (2014; after its publication, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. remarked: "A laugh on every page, Christina Oxenberg is one of the most lethal wits of the western world."), Princess Margaret's Coat (2017), and a history of her royal Serbian relations titled Dynasty: A True Story (2018). Her mother Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia resides in Belgrade; the princess was able to get the Serbian government to retain to her the ownership of a small villa that belonged to her mother Princess Olga. The princess has worked successfully to rehabilitate the reputation and legal status in Serbia of her father Prince Regent Paul, who had been declared an enemy of the state during the long Communist rule in the country. Both women are accomplished in their own right.

The crux of the issue between the two now is the issue of Christina's paternity. Last year, Christina wrote that Princess Elizabeth had told her daughter that Christina's actual father was U.S. President John F. Kennedy...not Howard Oxenberg, to whom Elizabeth was married at the time. Last week, Princess Elizabeth gave a statement that was picked up by several Balkan news organisations saying that her daughter is a liar and that she [Elizabeth] never told her daughter that J.F.K. was her biological dad. In response, via a statement given to other news organisations, Christina responded to her mother's statement by affirming that her mum did, indeed, tell her that John F. Kennedy was her biological father. Obviously, mother and daughter are not on speaking terms...unless you count communicating with one another through interviews in the press. Further, the final answer to this question of paternity can only be definitively answered by a DNA test. In the meantime, if one wonders whether Christina Oxenberg is the daughter of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, it will depend on how one looks at it. If you ask Christina, she will tell you that she is J.F.K.'s daughter because her mother told her so. Yet, if you ask Elizabeth, she will tell you that she never said anything of the sort. Regardless, one thing is a fact: Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia did meet President John Kennedy several times in the early months of 1962.

History of Medicine - Jean-Martin Charcot

Charcot

Medical students and doctors worldwide undoubtedly recognise the name Charcot in one form or another. Undoubtedly the father of modern neurology alongside his mentor Duchenne, Jean-Martin Charcot was a French neurologist and anatomist who has 15 medical eponyms towards his name. His work on hysteria and hypnosis, although later refuted, contributed to the development of modern psychiatry. He was so influential that he was even referenced in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Born and raised in Paris, Charcot studied medicine at the University of Paris in 1853 and became a professor in 1860. He practiced at the largest hospital in France, the Salpetriere hospital, ever since and opened Europe's first neurology clinic in 1882. As a doctor with remarkable teaching skills, his clinic attracted students across the continent; Freud, Babinksi, Bouchard, Tourette amongst others became influential figures in medical history in their own rights

The Clinician:

Though Charcot trained as a pathologist, he became a prominent clinician and recognised the importance of correlating clinical and post-mortem anatomical findings. In conjunction with Duchenne's emphasis on clinical examinations, Charcot promoted a systematic neurological history & physical examination to his students. His unique teaching technique forms the basis of the modern-day bedside teaching; it included interviewing patients diagnosed with the same condition during case presentation, imitating neurological symptoms of the patients, and drawing pictures illustrating the main clinical findings of a disease.

Neurology:

Charcot described and named Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for the first time, correlating clinical features with postmortem findings of his patients' brains. Although prior descriptions of MS date back to the 14th century and the pathognomonic periventricular plaques were described by others before him, the clinical correlation was not established. He was the first to diagnose MS in a living patient; he proposed a triad of symptoms (as medical students would know) of nystagmus, intention tremor, and scanning speech.

Charcot demonstrated cortical motor centres in humans, delineated the brain's vascular supply and , with his intern Charles Bourchard, described miliary aneurysms (Charcot-Bouchard aneurysms). Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (or Motor Neuron Disease), which he also described, is still referred to as Charcot's disease in many parts of the world. He noted that in infantile paralysis the spinal lesions were limited to the anterior horns of the grey matter. With Marie he described the peroneal form of muscular atrophy, later called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

By studying a complication of syphilis called tabes dorsalis that led to a loss of sensation in both legs,  Charcot hypothesised that absent sensation led to abnormal weight-bearing while walking, eventually cause joint deformations and bony destructions. Although today it is predominantly associated with diabetes, a deformed joint due to impaired sensation is still called a Charcot joint (neuropathic joint).

He had clear views on the differentiation of hysteria from epilepsy, neurosis from psychoses, and multiple sclerosis from paralyses agitans (the old name for Parkinson's disease, literally meaning Shaking Palsy). Charcot advocated the renaming of the disease to Parkinson's disease (la maladie de Parkinson) in honour of James Parkinson, the first man to describe the disease decades prior.

Charcot's Trainees:

Medical students and doctors would likely recognise a few familiar names:
  • Sigmund Freud
  • Joseph Babinski
  • Charles-Joseph Bouchard - his intern and perhaps the most dramatic protégé. After Bouchard attained professorship at the University of Paris, his relationship with his mentor Charcot gradually deteriorated. Their strong personalities, their ambition to have schools of their own, and their competition to become the most influential man in the medical school resulted in antagonism between them. The most tragic consequence of this antagonism took place in 1892 when Bouchard presided over the competitive examinations for agrégation, in which Joseph Babinski, one of Charcot's youngest pupils, was a candidate. Charcot wanted his pupil to be nominated but Bouchard eliminated him in order to nominate his own pupils. The nominations were appealed but finally Bouchard's decision was upheld. Babinski did not retake the examination and never became a professor at the medical school.
  • Pierre Janet
  • William James
  • Pierre Marie
  • Albert Londe
  • Georges Gilles de la Tourette - Charcot bestowed the eponym for Tourette syndrome in his honour.
  • Alfred Binet
  • Albert Pitres amongst others.
