CUSTOMS REISSUES REGULATIONS FOR SHOPPING IN THE NORTH

Cyprus Mail - article by Annette Chrysostomou 5 September 2018

Increased numbers of Greek Cypriots buying cheap petrol and other items in the north following the fall in the Turkish lira has prompted the customs department to recently reissue the contents of the Green Line regulations on their website.
Though people have bought medicine and other items for years for their own use, often without being checked as they cross back over, there are regulations on how much can be bought into the Republic.
“Generally speaking, people can take items for up to €260 for their personal use,” customs department spokesman Christos Christou told the Cyprus Mail on Wednesday. “Obviously this does not include drugs, guns or tobacco.”

It is not illegal to buy fuel outright, as the Green Line regulations don’t limit the amount of petrol you fill your car with, as long it is for your own use and not for commercial gain.
The transfer of medical products intended for personal use of a ‘reasonable quantity’, for up to one month of treatment, has also been allowed by the customs regulations.
If they are stopped, people who are found crossing the checkpoint with pharmaceuticals have to sign a form saying that the items are intended for personal use only. They also need to take responsibility for any side effects.
It is also allowed to cross with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables – up to three kilos –  for personal use, without any documentation.
The movement of live animals and animal products across the line is prohibited except the movement of fresh fish and honey for commercial purposes. The transfer of honey for individual use up to three kilos also consists an exception.
A total ban on the import of pesticides applies.

The Man Who Would Be Holmes

Rex Stout, the great mystery writer – and Sherlockian – once estimated that about a third of all his reading was books he’d read before. I can’t say the same, but I do enjoy revisiting old friends from time to time.

Not long ago, for example, I picked up a copy of the Julian Symons novel A Three-Pipe Problem, which I remembered enjoying when I read it in paperback back in the 1980s. And I enjoyed it all over again.

Anyone more than casually familiar with Sherlock Holmes will recognize the title’s reference to the Holmes quote “It is quite a three-pipe problem” from “The Adventure of the Red-Headed League.” But this isn’t a pastiche. It’s a 20thcentury mystery about a television actor named Sheridan Haynes who lives on Baker Street and plays Holmes on television. When chance puts real-life murders in his path, how can he not don the deerstalker?

With the help of his own Irregulars, and the hindrance of Scotland Yard, “Sheri” takes on the case – all the while insisting (to general disbelief) that he hasn’t confused fact and fiction. The solution is surprising and satisfying. And even better, I didn’t remember it!

I must say it proceeds at a rather leisurely pace, which may not be for everyone.

Haynes appeared again in The Kentish Manor Murders, which I’ve not read.

Symons was a well-known British mystery critic, as well as a practitioner of the craft. His books of interest to Sherlockians include Great Detectives, Conan Doyle: Portrait of an Artist, and Mortal Consequences: A History from the Detective Story to the Crime Novel.

We have a Bathroom!

I am kind of tired today, but oh so content and happy. After weeks of slogging away at the plumbing and bathroom, it is (mostly) done! The floors are patched and back in place, the walls covered with a coat of plaster and the toilet and sink are installed.

We have been keeping up a good pace the last month as the insurance guy was coming for a walk through (did I mention that before?) and I was quite sure he didn't want to come look at holes in the floor and walls.

It was a bit anti-climatic when he arrived this morning, he was in the house for exactly 6 minutes and then went outside to measure. He didn't even step into the bathroom that we had stayed up late working on! One picture snapped from the doorway, checked off the list and on to the next thing.

Oh well, I don't really mind. I am just happy it is done and content to sit back and enjoy the progress! How cute is the sink?!? I love how it has made the bathroom more spacious!

Of course, there is still quite a bit to do, the walls aren't painted and the floor finished or trim yet.... But getting a sink and a toilet in is a milestone! And for this week, I am going to enjoy it!
