Drama in Manama: A Foreigner's Guide to Muharram in Bahrain (1940 Edition)
Bahrain holds a special place in the Persian Gulf for being one of the few countries to openly host processions commemorating the Islamic month of Muharram throughout the country. However, this post will not go into the history of Muharram itself and its significance to Shia Muslims in particular (though I do encourage independent research on the matter). In Bahrain, the first recorded public processions occurred in Manama in 1891, with it becoming an annual public event since. British records showed public Muharram processions also emerged in villages throughout the country in 1939.
Now the main subject of this post is the Muharram of 1939 which was during a significant time in Bahrain's history; oil was discovered in the country only 8 years before (the first in the Gulf region). With this oil and the establishment of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), the country saw an influx of engineers and experts in the oil & gas industry (predominantly British and Americans). For the most part, the westerners intermingled well with their Bahraini counterparts.
However in the Muharram of 1939, British records indicated that some minor altercations occurred between western employees of BAPCO and procession-goers after the foreigners laughed and photographed the processions, no injuries were reported. The following are excerpts from British records.
As a result of the massive influx of foreigners, processions during 1939 changed course of their regular procession paths and some of the foreigners followed into the side streets, causing minor altercations. In an effort to avoid the possibility of a riot in future Muharram processions, it was advised by the British political agency in Bahrain to BAPCO to restrict the number of foreigners in Manama to 100 persons during the month of Muharram.
Preparations were drawn up for the Muharram of 1940 and included a map that highlighted and identified areas for the public & those out of bounds to foreigners. Furthermore, a document was prepared on how foreigners should present themselves in Manama, should they wish to observe the processions of Manama (which many do to this present day). These plans were for the next Muharram procession, estimated to take place on 19th February, 1940.
Bonus: this page includes side commentary on Muharram by Charles Belgrave and include some inflammatory statements.

TALA EVENTS PULLED AFTER PERMISSION INCORRECTLY GRANTED
Cyprus Mail - article by Bejay Browne 3 June 2018
Concerted efforts to encourage people to visit the recently-upgraded Tala Square have suffered a blow after a string of planned events were cancelled by the local authorities, according to organisers.
Dutch ex-pats artist Joep Klinkenbijl and jewellery maker Johanna Bey, live in the area and came up with the idea of organising regular musical events to encourage people to visit the heart of the popular hillside village.
The village centre was revamped as part of a wider upgrade for the area. The square was pedestrianised and modernised and the upgrade included a colourfully lit water fountain, flower beds being created in the square, new lighting installed and uniform pergolas added for businesses.
The first event was hailed as a huge success, the ‘Christmas Square Affair 2017’, a collaboration with their Tala business, J & J Artworks Gallery, and Tala community council.
It saw around five hundred people descend on the square creating a buzz.
Klinkenbijl told the Sunday Mail: “I received signed and stamped permission from Tala council in February to organise regular musical events in cooperation with one of the councillors, as long as it finished before 10.45pm to respect residents,” he said.
However, on March 21 after booking a slew of acts for eight upcoming events in 2018, he received a second letter which revoked Tala council’s permission to hold the events, citing a new law aimed at reducing noise pollution and a meeting with police who said that only village events for religious festivals such as Easter and Christmas would be permitted and that live entertainment would only be permitted at amphitheatres.
But a spokesman for Paphos police told the Sunday Mail that this wasn’t the case and that in such cases, permission must be applied for from the Paphos district office who may then request an opinion from the police. “There is a procedure to follow. It depends on many things if permission will be granted such as what type of event it is, what time it is and so on.”
Paphos district officer, Mary Lambrou confirmed that in cases of applications for events that use loud speakers such as music, applications should be made to the Paphos district office and not the community council as they may currently only issue permits for events that don’t use speakers. She added that each application made to the Paphos District Office is examined individually.
“Talking generally, if a somebody wanted to organise an event that involves loudspeakers then the community council can’t give this permission, the individual needs permission from us and we consult the police authorities – it will be an objection or consent, We do give permissions for such musical events, if the area is suitable. Nearby houses shouldn’t be disturbed by noise for example,” she said.
The Paphos district officer noted that although there is a new law in Cyprus concerning noise pollution, it has yet to be enacted and it would be a big help for authorities. In particular, she mentioned the use of decibel metres in order to monitor the sound.
“We are hoping that it will come into effect next year as there are difficulties for all trying to control sound levels.” She added that in the case of Tala, there is an amphitheatre which can be used for events but didn’t completely rule out the use of other spaces in village and communities.
A Tala resident that spoke on condition of anonymity said that he believed vested interest were behind the current situation.
“Obviously the council members are all from the area, there is a conflict of interests on many occasions and I think this is one of them. The council members are not all organising the events, instead only one is along with a resident is with an expat couple. This speaks volumes,” he said.
Paphos resident John Watts attended both of the Tala events and said that such events are important for communities with suitable spaces. And although the square has been revamped at a huge cost, it remains deserted. “It looks lovely, it’s such a shame,” he said.
Watts said the events had created a buzz, which brought people of all nationalities together.
“Once in a while, if all of the proper permissions are in place, events like these should be encouraged, I don’t know why it’s a problem,” he said.
The head of Tala community council Areti Pieridou said: “We have no authority to issue permission for music events on council property such as the square. We can only do this when it’s in the community plans such as Christmas or Easter. We will have a Christmas celebration again this year, hopefully,” she said.

DEATH OF A ROMANOV PRINCE
Prince Oleg Konstantinovich's Promising Life and Early Death
“The coffin was lowered into the grave...... Soon there was a burial mound above. It was quickly covered with wreaths, flowers and crowned with a plain wooden cross. Prince Oleg’s promising life was finished.” (by Oleg’s brother Prince Gabriel in Memories of the Marble Palace p.261)
Death of a Romanov Prince follows the brief life-journey of Prince Oleg Konstantinovich, one of the lesser-known members of the powerful and privileged Russian Imperial family. He was a talented young man of intellectual and artistic genius. Oleg was the gifted son of the talented Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, who wrote under the pseudonym of KR. The Grand Duke was a friend of Tchaikovsky, who set his numerous poems to music, and who established literary circles for his troops, translated Hamlet into Russian, and wrote The King of the Jews, an original play that he and his sons performed.
The reader will follow Prince Oleg Konstantinovich, his family, and Imperial cousins, as his life takes him via the luxuries of the family’s four magnificent palaces of Pavlovsk, in Tsarskoye Selo, the Marble Palace in St Petersburg, the Konstantine Palace at Strelna; and the Ostashevo Estate near Moscow; as well as numerous holidays in the Crimea.
The young prince enjoyed the most liberal program in literary, scientific, and artistic education. He was the first Romanov to be enrolled in a civilian school and graduated from the Imperial Lyceum in St Petersburg, where in 1913 he won the Pushkin Medal for his academic achievements. At the age of 21, Prince Oleg Konstantinovich was on the crest of a brilliant career and personal greatness when World War I began. Then tragedy struck ...
Oleg Konstantinovich shares with us via his diaries the brutality of war. Just six weeks into the war, he was shot and fatally wounded. He died at a hospital in Vilnius three days later. However, it is what happens to his remains after the death of this Romanov prince that is so shocking.
The book has 240 pages and contains more than 300 amazing photos of the Romanov Dynasty, with focus on the the Oleg Konstantinovich branch, while the other branches of the family are also featured, as are Oleg Konstantinovich's German relations.
Death of a Romanov Prince is $48.95 plus shipping...$8.00 USA – $33.00 International.
