"Lunar eclipse - Chandra Grahan", Partial on June 26th & December 21st 2010

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on June 26, 2010, the first of two lunar eclipses in 2010. The second will be a total eclipse on December 21, 2010.

Where will the Eclipse Occur?

The June 26 eclipse will be visible to observers in places such as:
  • Hawaii.
  • Western Alaska.
  • Australia.
  • New Zealand.
  • Eastern portions of Malaysia and other parts of Asia.
The following map shows the detail view of the Chandra Grahan on June 26, 2010 around the world:

Chandra Grahan and Hindus
Usually during a Chandra Grahan, a fast (Upvaas) is observed by certain communities in Hindu religion. The fast begins about 9 hours before the beginning of Chandra Grahan.
People also take a bath in cold water and chant mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Shiva like the Ashtakshara Mantra or Mrityunjaya Mantra. This is done whenever Surya and Chandra are under the influence of Rahu. Pregnant women chant the Santana Gopala Mantra.
Note: There is no need to follow any rituals for this grahan as it is not visible in India. Panchangs and Calendars have ignored this grahan mostly.

"Lunar eclipse partial on December 31 2009" - Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa

The partial lunar eclipse will occur over many parts of Asia, Australasia, Europe and Africa. The moon will be found in the constellation Gemini on December 31, 2009. This is the last eclipse in 2009. Here is the animation of this partial lunar eclipse in December 2009. Technical specifications of this lunar eclipse is available from NASA as well.

When Will the Eclipse Occur?

The first penumbral contact occurs at 17:17:08 Universal Time (UT). The ecliptic conjunction occurs at about 19:12:45 UT and greatest eclipse takes place at 19:22:39 UT when the eclipse magnitude will reach 0.0763. The eclipse ends at about 21:28:11 UT.

Will the Eclipse be Visible?

This minor partial lunar eclipse will be difficult to see with the naked eye as the umbral magnitude will only be 0.0763. The penumbral magnitude will be 1.0556. The moon’s southern limb barely tickles the earth’s central shadow.

Lunar eclipse, Chandra grahan August 6th - Timing, date and significance

Just as when you thought you were done with eclipses this year, (lunar eclipse on July 7th & solar eclipse on July 22nd), there is one more lunar eclipse coming up on August 6th 2009. Here is a detailed report of the penumbral lunar eclipse from NASA. The eclipse is partially visible in the east half of the US and partially visible in all of India.

A good visualization (with animation) of this August 6th lunar eclipse is provided by Shadowandsubstance.com. May not be clearly visible to the naked eye. Maximum eclipse will occur during the evening at 7:40 pm CDT on Thursday, August 6th. This would be 6.10AM on August 7th in India.

Mypanchang.com states that lunar eclipse timing in India is at: August 6th 4.31AM - 7.48AM. Not sure which timing is right; will check into that.
