The Fusionia story started with Sorin teaching violin Marios and Savvas in their teenage years, followed by their continuation of studies together in London, experimenting around Fusionia Duo, then their coming back to Cyprus as members of Cyprus Symphony Orchestra beside their teacher. The principal cellist of the same orchestra, Jakub Otcenasek, joined them as a founder member for a year, then Robert, who luckily lives and works in Cyprus, replaced him. In the end of January 2019, they performed their first concert, despite the fact that Marios was still in the army. The concert was held in Kasteliotissa Medieval Hall Nicosia, where they played Mozart and Mendelssohn. After writing their first arrangement - Cypriot Suite – the quartet performed it in Paphos in Technopolis20 in June 2019 and also performed two concerts, one in the Municipal Theatre Nicosia and the other in Pattichion Municipal Theatre in Limassol, as part of the Kypria International Festival in September 2019. The project was named Viennese Pictures. They played

Webern, Y. Papageorgiou and their second arrangement - Strauss Valses.

Marios Ioannou (violin) began violin lessons with Sorin Alexandru Horlea under the supervision of Professor Matheos Kariolou at age of 11 in 2006. In 2009 he studied at the Pancyprian Gymnasium and Music school of Nicosia which lasted for 3 years. He studied Music at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance under the supervision of the Professor Andrew Sherwood and Boris Brovtsyn and he had his MA at Royal Academy of Music under the Prof. Mateja Marinkovic and Jack Liebeck. He is qualified violin teacher (LTCL) from Trinity Laban since May 2016. Marios is a member of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra since 2012, a private violin teacher since 2013 and principal of 2nd violin in Cyprus Chamber Orchestra since 2016. He has played in different orchestras and he has participated in a number of masterclasses.

Savvas Lagou (violin) was born in Larnaca in 1991. He began violin lessons at the age of 7 at the annex of the Conservatoire of East Attica in Larnaca where he graduated in 2009. Immediately after, Savvas became the student of Sorin Alexandru Horlea who was his major influence as a musician and violinist. Prior to his studies, Savvas served in the army for two years as a member of the military band (S.M.E.F). In 2011 he studied for one year at City University of London under Magdalena Filipczak. While he was a student there he gained a place to transfer as a second year student at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Throughout his studies, Savvas received the "Ludwig Lebell Scholar" and “Marios Tokas” scholarships for a period of three years from the State Scholarship Foundation of Cyprus in 2009. (I.K.Y). At Trinity Laban he studied with Andrew Sherwood. He also had master classes with Philippe Honore, Rivka Golani, John Crawford, Pieter Schoeman, Zsolt-Tihamer Visontay and Remus Azoitei. In April 2014 Savvas performed as a soloist with Somerset Youth Symphony Orchestra followed by two performances with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in May 2014. After receiving his LTCL in Instrumental/Vocal Teaching, Savvas had been a dedicated teacher for a year starting September 2015, where he returned to Cyprus to prepare for his MA auditions with his mentor Sorin Alexandru Horlea. From 2016-2018 Savvas was an MA student in the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London where he studied with Mateja Marinkovic and Jack Liebeck. He also had chamber music coaching with the Doric String Quartet and Levon Chilingirian. Savvas is a co-leader in the first violins of the newly formed Cyprus Chamber Orchestra. He led the orchestra in its first concert performing Bach's concerto for violin and oboe and on various other occasions. On the 30th of April 2017 he participated in the concert “UnitedByMusic Youth” which was a side by side concert with Berlin Philharmonic players in Paphos, Cyprus. Since August 2018 Savvas is a member of The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in the 2nd violins. Savvas as a member of the Fusionia Duo, has also performed in the Hellenic Centre of London, Synodiko Ieras Mitropolis Kykkou and Wigmore Hall (Trinity Laban students’ concert). Finally, Savvas has been working as a professional violinist and singer since 2006 participating in festivals of classical and traditional Greek and Cypriot music in Cyprus, Greece, Belgium, Italy, Romania, Slovenia and London.

Sorin Alexandru Horlea (violia) was born in Bucharest in 1975 and started the violin at the age of eight. He graduated from George Enescu Music High-School where he studied under maestro Octav Savitchi and Ciprian Porumbescu Music University where his Professor was maestro Daniel Podlovschi. He took part in summer-courses with Viktor Pikaizen and Eugen Sarbu. In 1997 he won the third prize at the George Enescu Childhood Memories contest in Bucharest. During his university studies he played in the Radio Chamber Orchestra, Philarmonia Chamber Orchestra and in Bucharest Opera, but mainly in George Enescu Philharmonic. In 2000 he moved to Lebanon to fulfil his position in Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra, where he became the assistant concert master. He moved to Cyprus in 2005 and since then is a member of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. He is also working as an associate teacher of the Cyprus Youth Orchestra. Alongside his output as an orchestral musician, he is an active performer as a soloist and in various chamber groups throughout Europe and Middle East, playing not only classical but also jazz and folk music. He was a member of Cyprus String Quartet, and the folk band Danube Quartet. He regularly performs contemporary music as he is a resident musician at the Avaton Festival in Limassol, a member of the Chronos Ensemble, and of the Ensemble Cyclamen. In 2016, he started studying viola on his own in order to develop as a musician. In June 2019 he recorded together with the pianist Anita Tomasevich the album Nocturnal Ballads, consisting on 16 violin encores. Anyone can listen to his concerts and recordings on his youtube channel.

Robert Grod (cello) was born in 1991 in Lithuania. He studied in Vilnius at the Balys Dvarionas music school in the class of J. Veiveriene. He is a laureate prize winner of the Dvarionas and Urba music competitions in Lithuania. In 2010 Robert began his studies at the Moscow State Conservatory, under the tutorship of Natalia Shakhovskaya. In 2012 he won first prize in the Kozolupov competition in Moscow, and in 2016 he graduated from the conservatory with honours. Since then, he has been working in Nicosia for Cyprus Young String Soloists, which is a programme of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, aiming at identifying children aged 3-18 who are very talented in music, and at providing them with instrument instruction at the highest possible level.

Mozart: Symphony no. 40 in G minor, K. 550

Schubert: Symphony no. 5 in B flat major, D. 485

“As from afar the magic notes of Mozart’s music still gently haunt me…Thus does our soul retain these fair impressions, which no time, no circumstances can efface, and they lighten our existence. They show us in the darkness of this life a bright, clear, lovely distance, for which we hope with confidence. O Mozart, immortal Mozart, how many, oh how endlessly many such comforting perceptions of a brighter and better life hast thou brought to our souls!” With these words, Franz Schubert expresses his great esteem and admiration about the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Such indelible bright impressions we hope that this programme brings you too. To conduct the two classical masterpieces, Mozart’s Symphony no. 40 and Schubert’s Symphony no. 5, we warmly welcome back on stage maestro Alkis Baltas.

Programme:

Scarlatti: Sonatas, set 2 (arr. J. Woolrich)

Mendelssohn: Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture (arr. D. Matthews)

Copland: Music for the Theatre

Contemporary British composer John Woolrich made a magnificent version of selected Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas. As the composer himself told us: “These versions of three of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas (he wrote 555 in all) aren’t simply orchestrations, although Scarlatti's notes are mostly left alone. Any liberties I have taken are there to underline the wit (and strangeness) of Scarlatti’s music.” Mendelssohn composed his Overture to the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1826, at the early age of seventeen, initially for two pianos. Orchestrated shortly after, the overture encapsulates all the characters and events that take place in the drama and evokes the fairy world like no other music had done before. The CySO will perform David Matthews’s arrangement of the overture for ensemble of eleven players, premiered by the Nash Ensemble in March 2016. Aaron Copland’s Music for the Theatre incorporates the energetic rhythms and catchy melodies of jazz in the 1920s and was written with no specific play in mind as one might think. As Copland explained, "The music seemed to suggest a certain theatrical atmosphere, so after developing the idea into five short movements, I chose the title."
