The popular Markideion Theatre Paphos hosts many cultural events and normally seats over 400 patrons. Please note that due to Covid restrictions that number is now reduced to 180. Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band retraces the history of jazz in the 20th century, featuring classic pieces from the 30s and onwards, Swing, Latin, Funk with the participation of renowned jazz singer George Kalopedis. You will also hear adaptations of traditional Cypriot songs, arranged by Cypriot composer Aris Antoniades composed specifically for Jazzologia. The Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band was created in October 2016 by renowned saxophonist George Krasidis and is a collective, voluntary effort of 19 great musicians with a common characteristic of their love of jazz and traditional big band music. The repertoire of the Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band consists of historical compositions and orchestrations by the pioneers of Big Band Music including Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, Herbie Hancock, Michael Buble and many other greats but also more contemporary works written for orchestras of this particular type. Some well-known titles we will be performing include Cheek to Cheek, I've got you under my skin, Fly me to the moon, In the mood, and Fever plus many more. The Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band has been known for its presence in a number of Festivals and Performances in Cyprus, such as the Cultural Capital of Paphos 2017 Jazz Encounters, the Old Port Jazz Festival 2017, the Jazzologia at Pattichio Theater 2018, Faneromeni 2019, the November 2019 Cyprus Tour, Kypria International Festival 2020, the Summer Concerts in Technopolis 20, Paphos and many more.
The band features: Giorgos Krasidis (tenor sax - band director), Achilleas Tomasidis, Simos Tziakouris (alto sax), Marios Papares (tenor sax), Aris Kyriakides (baritone sax), Elias Ioannou, Michalis Michael, Fedonas Dimitriou, Christos Loizides (trumpet), Burkhard Fischer, Kleanthis Demetriou, Byron Athinodorou (trombone), George Issa (guitar), Nikolas Genethliou (piano), Ioannis Karseras (bass), Andreas Combos (drums) and George Kalopedis (vocals).
