Goa Churches: Epitome of Architectural Splendor

Goa is one of the most picturesque destinations in India. However, the smallest state in India, but yet it attracts a huge number of tourists from across the world. Pristine beaches, attractive shops, and attractive churches, this place is an abode of peace for the tourists. Goa is most popular for the beaches but thousands of tourists visit Goa to explore the majestic churches throughout Goa’s skyline. Once a Portugal colony, Goa has still not lost the charm of colonialism. Old Goa is a world heritage site.
The majestic architecture of the Goa churches draws the attention of a number of globetrotters. Most of the churches in Goa feature two or three types of architecture. The architectural grandeur of these churches reflects the flavor of Portugal. The most distinct architectures that are reflected in the churches are baroque style of architecture or the ornate altars. Gothic staircases are the most prevalent feature in most of these churches.
Goa churches make the place a pilgrimage site for Asian Christians. Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the most important and attractive churches in Goa. The church features a tomb of St Francis Xavier. Basilica of Bom Jesus keeps up the charm of Old Goa. Old Goa’s another very charming church is the Church Of St Francis Of Assisi. The church boasts of glorifying history. The rich culture of Goa is reflected in these churches.
Tourists from all over the world visit Panaji to explore the splendor of the Se Cathedral church. This church is dedicated to St. Catherine. The most interesting story of the church revolves around its construction. It took three fourth of the century in the construction. The magnificent beauty of the church is a result of joint efforts from engineers Julio Simao and Ambrosio Arguero. Made in the shape of a church, this is one of the best attractions for tourists. Another Goan church is the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception situated in Panaji.

Paper AND electronic. But I love my paper planner the best.

I am not going to list this. You can read my blog. On the side there are tags...check them out.

THE BIOGRAPHY - IGOR MARKEVITCH (1912-1983)

Igor Markevitch was born in Kiev and spent his formative years in Switzerland. He took piano lessons from his father and later studied the piano with Alfred Cortot and composition with Nadia Boulanger. From the late 1920s until World War II he enjoyed a successful career as a composer, appearing in 1929 as soloist in the first performance of his Piano Concerto, commissioned by Diaghilev. In Italy during the war he abandoned composition and when peace returned embarked on a new career as conductor. The majority of his many recordings were made with the Philharmonia, Berlin Philharmonic, Lamoureux and London Symphony Orchestras. He made his United States debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1955 and was a guest conductor in all the main international centres until the mid-1970s, when ill health caused him to concentrate on writing and teaching.
THE RECORDINGS
Igor Markevitch recorded a huge discography, much of it currently available. In this compilation, great care has been taken to select important material that is generally not available. The Manfred Symphony (with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1963) was issued as part of Markevitch's recording of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies but has never been issued separately. The overture and dances from Glinka's A Life for the Tsar appear for the first time outside the recording of the complete opera (made in 1957). The outstanding accounts of Debussy's La Mer (from Paris in 1959) and Chabrier's España (recorded in Madrid in 1966, with Markevitch's Spanish Radio & Television Orchestra) have not previously been available on CD. The second suite from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé was a Markevitch speciality. Unlike his commercial release of the work, this live recording, with the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg in 1960, features the chorus part which adds enormously to the atmosphere and excitement generated by this music. The 1956 recording of Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel is a rarity, having enjoyed only limited availability in recent years.

THE BIOGRAPHY - NICOLAI MALKO (1883-1961)

Nicolai Malko studied in St Petersburg under Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, Liadov and Tcherepnin before beginning his professional career in St Petersburg in 1908. After the 1914-18 war he became a professor in Moscow, then in Leningrad, and came to wider notice when he conducted the premiere of Shostakovich's First Symphony in 1926. He left Russia two years later, appearing in Prague, Vienna, London and Copenhagen, and settling in 1940 in the United States, where he taught. After the war he recorded extensively with the Philharmonia Orchestra until 1956, when he succeeded Sir Eugene Goossens in Sydney, where he died in 1961.
THE RECORDINGS
This compilation conducted by Nicolai Malko is drawn entirely from the conductor's catalogue of studio recordings. It features important Russian material with which the conductor was particularly associated (CD1) and a selection of mainstream repertoire (CD2). All the recordings, except the Haydn and the Nielsen, were made in the 1950s in London with Walter Legge's Philharmonia Orchestra. None of this material has appeared on CD before, except the renowned (and pioneering) stereo recording of Prokofiev's Symphony No.7 (from 1955) and Nielsen's Maskarade Overture (from Copenhagen in 1947). The excellent mono recordings of the Borodin Second Symphony (1955) and Haydn's 'Oxford' Symphony (1953) were critically acclaimed at the time of their first issue on LP.
