Ras Dashen mountain

Ras Dashen is the highest mountain in Ethiopia, and the highest of the Simen range, a group of eroded mountains that rises stunningly from the surrounding 9,000 foot plateau in northern Ethiopia. Despite the overall high elevation of Ethiopia, the Simen range is the only place in the country that is regularly snow-covered in Winter. The mountains are composed of basalt volcanic rock, though there are no active volcanoes today. In the midst of the Simen range, Ras Dashen is a cluster of nine rocky peaks. The mountain trails of the Simen Range are dotted with many small agricultural villages. Traditionally the local people believed the mountains to be inhabited by hostile spirits, so the peaks remained unclimbed until Italy's occupation of Ethiopia in 1935.

New year, new start, new blogging

So I’m back to blogging!  Since I’m unemployed as of yesterday, I’ve decided the next few months are about me me me.  And I plan on blogging about it.  Not just health and fitness goals, but everything.  I have a good opportunity to explore my city, really concentrate on working out, cooking and eating well, as well as my job search.  Those all seem like good things to me!

I have been trying to think of another “challenge” for myself since my vegan experiment and I think my next one will be  yoga.  Yoga at least 6 days per week, but I’ll really shoot for 7 days.  I’m not going to be ridiculous about it though.  For instance…if I can only do 20 minutes that day, that’s what I’ll do.  I have found some good podcasts to use, I have DVDs, classes at my gym and I’m going to try Yoga to the People in my neighborhood because they do yoga on a donation basis so it’s something extra I can afford.  You always hear about the great benefits of yoga, but I have practiced so inconsistently over the last 15 years that I don’t believe I’ve really gotten the full effect.  I will be starting this challenge on Monday.

I won’t bore people with all my fabulous numbers, but yes, I want to lose some weight and some inches.  Once I hit various milestones I’ll post the negative numbers, but I really just want to focus on correcting bad habits, trying new things and being consistent.  I’m sure the first few weeks will be difficult, like any new habit, but I’m looking forward to it!

"Bangalore Expressway ready", "Elevated route to Electronic city"

In Bangalore, commuting to Electronics City has been a stressful part of life for lakhs of employees at IT firms like Infosys. Now, after four years and 776 crores, an elevated expressway designed to make the commute shorter is ready.

When the government of Karnataka planned the Electronics City on the outskirts of Bangalore, it did not perhaps factor in the unbearable traffic burden that commuters on Hosur Road would have to face. But the complaints and clout of IT giants led to the planning and execution of this massive project - a nine-kilometre expressway leading right into Electronics City.

"It is unbelievable how much we have suffered. From 1994 till today, I could estimate we could have lost 15-16,000 employees just because they did not want to spend commute time on the road," says Mohandas Pai, board member at Infosys. "Electronics City alone gives 7.5 to 8 billion dollars of software export," he adds.

The original Hosur Road route from Silk Board junction to Electronics City took up to an hour and 10 minutes in peak hours, because it was a two-lane road. With the new four-lane elevated expressway - which also has 10 lanes below - Bangloreans can cover the distance in just 10 minutes.

The few kilometres from Bangalore into Electronics City have eaten away hours from the daily lives of commuters. People working in this area hope this elevated expressway will improve the quality of their lives by shortening their commuting time.

But will it make a difference, or just change the location of the bottleneck?

"youtube music to put baby to sleep", "videos to help babies sleep", "baby sleep routines"

Are you tired of trying to put your baby to sleep, and he shows no signs of slowing down? Well that is normal for all parents, new and experienced alike. But having some music around can help calm down the baby and in easing him into sleep.

Each baby is different, but all need help being soothed before they will go to sleep. Try:
  • Telling a story in a soothing, monotone voice
  • Walking around with baby
  • Rocking the baby in a rocker or glider
  • Singing
  • Offer a pacifier
  • Put on some soothing music. I found the following videos worked well for my son (8 mon - 18 mon). You can put them in repeat mode so that they can go on forever .. until the baby sleeps

My goals for 2010

Happy New Year! I cannot believe it is 2010 and the start of a new decade. I have a good feeling about 2010 – it is going to be a big year. It will mark the 10th anniversary of my moving to the USA, my parents 50th wedding anniversary and hopefully the year when I become a naturalized US Citizen.

For the last few years I have taken the time to set and write down personal goals for the things I want to achieve in the new year. I am a big believer that when you write goals and review them regularly you are more likely to stay on target and actually achieve them. I am also a big believer in accountability and I think that when you tell people about your goals this is another great way to stay on track.

So in the spirit of full disclosure, and to ask for your help in achieving my goals, here is what I want to achieve in 2010.

Health and Fitness

  • Run Disney Marathon under 4 hours 40 minutes – January 10, 2010

  • Train for and complete 50 mile Tour de Cure Bike Race – February 28, 2010

  • Train for and complete Florida Half Ironman – May 16, 2010

  • Reach goal weight of 185 lbs and 16% body fat prior to Florida Half Ironman

Personal

  • Read one book a month

  • Become a US Citizen

  • Blog at least once every two weeks

Professional

  • Earn at least 20 continuing education credits for SPHR re-certification

Travel

  • Spend a long weekend in New York and Atlanta

Here is to 2010. A year full of things that have never been, and great adventures!
