Where to Go in Bali Island? - Top 5 Destinations Other Than Kuta Beach Bali

The majority of the Bali travelers go to the most popular Bali destinations such as Kuta beach, Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Ubud. But despite Bali being a small island there is much more to see and experience than just these villages.

If you are curious what else Bali has to offer, make sure you continue reading for this article will list 5 destination that are definitely worth staying but where most travelers eventually don't reach.

Be aware though that these destinations can be very quiet. So if you really need a relaxing holiday then these are definitely the places you should consider...

Candidasa:

Candidasa is probably one of the most famous of all the 5 villages listed here. What was once a famous tourist village, today it can get pretty deserted in certain periods of the year. It's probably not that popular as it is right at the seashore but it doesn't have a real beach.
However depending on your hotel you can still go swimming during high tide. A good place to jump into the water is Alam Asmara Dive Resort.

But the nicest thing about Candidasa is that it has a relaxing atmosphere plus from here it's easy to explore the eastern part of the Bali island. This part of the island offers great places to experience the Balinese culture and nature.

Amed:

Amed actually consists of 5 little fishing villages set along the coast. Amed doesn't have soft sanded beach and is therefore mostly famous among die-hard divers who spend most of their Bali holiday under water.

However besides Bali scuba diving, the very lay back Amed is a great place to escape the crowd and to enjoy your holiday to unwind. And besides, the sea view in Amed Bali is terrific. It's impossible to get bored of the blue emerald water.

Munduk:

Set in the mountains this village is an ideal spot to go Bali hiking, visit waterfalls and to escape the heat;-). It's a wonderful place to wander around and take the trails that take you along local houses, plantations, and forest.

And when you get back at your hotel and you sip hot cup of tea you have a magnificent view over the rice fields and mountains. On a clear day you might even see the ocean...

Pemuteran:

This village is located in the north western part of Bali and is blessed with an amazing coral garden just 20 minutes away. So as you can imagine, like Amed it's mostly popular among Bali scuba diving and snorkeling lovers.

But the nice thing about Pemuteran are the beautiful beaches, the mountain landscape and that despite the presence of the resorts, the village is still pretty underdeveloped. It probably still looks like Kuta beach Bali in the 1980's.

Balian:

This tiny village is located in western Bali island and everyday surfers wade into the water to catch the excellent waves. So as you can imagine this is one of the most relaxing places on the island. Every body just takes it very easy here.

If you are not into surfing, then it's still an excellent place to enjoy the food and sea breeze while catching up on all the books you wanted to read but never had time to do it.

Swimming around Batu Kapal

Ship Rock' gets its name from its large central pinnacle that breaks the Banda Sea's surface and looks not surprisingly like a ship. It lies to the north west of Pulau Pisang. The main features that make this site such a favourite are its interesting topography, and enormous gorgonian fans and barrel sponges.
Batu Kapal is unique in the Banda Islands in that it is a series of pinnacles. The main pinnacle is quite large and slopes down to 22 metres. On its west and northern sides there are walls. From the bottom of this central pinnacle, you are then free to explore the deeper submerged pinnacles, 1 off to the southeast, 1 to the east, 1 to the northwest and a large boulder to the north east. The overall area of Batu Kapal is much too large to cover in 1 dive.
The southeast pinnacle drops to 34 metres on its outside, and rises to 26 metres. Here the orange gorgonians and barrel sponges are truly gargantuan. Swimming around the pinnacle, past some beautiful stands of deep purple ellisella whip coral fans, you're sure to encounter large schools of midnight snappers and bigeye bream. The eastern pinnacle is similar but slightly shallower, and the north-eastern boulder lies on 22 metres. The pinnacle in the northwest is more cylindrical, and rises from 40 metres to 10 metres, though it has less coral growth. Potato cod, moray eels, rainbow runners, longnose emperors, grey reef sharks and yellow ail barracuda are sometimes seen here, so take you pick on which suits your requirements and diving experience.
You'll no doubt end you dive by ascending back up the main pinnacle, over fields of small orange dendronephthya soft coral bushes and violet blue tunicates, home to masses of redtooth triggerfish, and blacklip butterflyfish. Up in the shallows, the rocky surface is adorned with leather corals and hosts an amazing variety of colourful reef fishes. There are lots of red fire gobies, blue goldtail demoiselles, pink and orange-finned anemonefish, and many of the different species of smaller surgeons, such as the palelipped and brown surgeonfish.
When the Banda Sea current is running, Batu Kapal acts like magnet and pulls in the big pelagics. You'll definitely want to make more than 1 dive here on your Banda liveaboard cruise.

Jellyfish Lake

Known as a biological paradise the like of which you can find only at one other place on earth, this lake hosts a huge colony of jellyfish.

4 species of endemic jellyfish lives in this lagoon, including the upside down Cassiopeia Ornate,Mastigias PapuaAurelia Aurita and Tripedalia Cystophora. These jellyfish are quite special; unlike their sea-living counterparts, they have been living in a lake, protected from their natural predators such as turtles and barracuda. Through time therefore, they have lost their ability to sting simply because they have had no need for them.
It's an otherworldly experience swimming with these jellyfish in hues of transparent pink and almost invisible blue as they gently pulsate and orb around you. Some find it eerie, others find it indescribably beautiful.
Try looking down into the depths of the lake where, among the green algae, you'll spot some snow white anemones. These are the new predators of the jellyfish; and any jellyfish which head down to the bottom of the lake are usually gobbled up by the anemones.
Lake Kakaban was created through a geological uplifting of the seabed over a period of 2,000,000 years, effectively landlocking 5 km² of sea water within a 50 metre high ridge. Over this long period of time the trapped marine life have adapted to stagnant, brackish and less saline water, low mineral levels and a simple food chain.
Fringed by mangrove and with a shallow bottom densely covered in green halimeda algae, the lake is also home to sea snakes, cardinalfish, gobies, tunicates, sea cucumbers, tube worms, crustaceans and other simple marine life forms.
Jellyfish Lake is actually a snorkelling site (you won't be allowed to dive here) comprising a lake in the middle of Kakaban Island, about 25 minutes from Sangalaki Island. You'll have to take a short trek through an untouched rainforest to the lake from the shore, after which you can snorkel to your hearts content.

Kakaban Island

Kakaban island is part of the Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Kakaban shaped like the number nine and there is a lake in the middle. At the beginning, the lake is a lagoon of an atoll, formed by rocks more than 2 million years ago. On that time, for thousand years the rock rose into above sea level.
Ecosystem changes in Lake Kakaban occur gradually, in which rain water and ground water mixed with salt water.
Life on Lake Kakaban basically are seawater creatures. Over thousands of years they adapted to brackish water environment that was isolated because of sea water seems to go into the lake through the cracks in the rocks on the surrounding rocks and mixed with rain water. There is no large crack that connect the lake to the sea, so no large animals in Lake Kakaban.
The only lakes are known with similar ecosystems Kakaban Lake is located in Palau, a country in Micronesia, with fewer species than Kakaban.
Kakaban can be reached via the sea from Tanjung Redeb, the Capital of Berau Regency. It takes about 2.5 hours by speed boat or seven hours with a regular motorboat.
Kakaban surrounded by high cliffs that are steep, so a landing had to achieve from flat and open areas. After going through the wooden stairs then the visitor will find one of the world's heritage.
For diving, there are several points that are considered essential for its beauty, places that are named Barracuda Point, Cabbage Patch, The Drift, The Plateau and Rainbow Run, The Wall, Blue Light Cave, Diver `s Delight and The North Face. Variations of the various types of dive sites is certainly a tremendous thrill for the experienced diver to see the wonders of the world.
Kakaban will attract tourists with its uniqueness. For example, jellyfish lake in Palau have been visited by more than 30,000 visitors / tourists per year while Palau has a population of only 15,000 people inhabiting an area of 487 km2. Compared with a population of 99,738 Berau people in 1996 and has an area of 24,201 km2. If Lake Kakaban can get 10% of the number of visitors coming to Palau-per-year, and charged the entry fee of US$ 7 per person, the amount of revenue will go to local governments is approximately US$ 21,000 or 172 million rupiahs per year not including other financial benefits gained through the facilities of transportation, lodging, and tax revenues from tourism managers and other service agencies.
Like the sea surround it, Kakaban organisms in the lake may also have the substances with the function of drugs, which threatened gone before we know it. Integrated management planning is a very important tool for managing national assets efficiently and sustainably. Development activities aimed at short-term could jeopardize future development in all regions and economic income.
In connection with the tourism potential, Lake Kakaban may be in threatened condition if precautions are not done early. This threat can be caused by the impact of uncontrolled tourism that cause pollution, increased sedimentation, and physical damage caused by visitors who swim in the lake, use of outboard engines on the lake resulted in disturbance of habitats, species extinction, and will eventually result in decreasing the potential for tourism.

We're All Moving to Lake Toba

I couldn't believe it. My friend had been working methodically at an interesting and rewarding job in HR for the past 15 years. He had been married to his lovely wife for the last five, and they seemed to be right on track for taking advantage of the housing crisis and settling into a larger house. Why on earth were they making the seemingly insane decision to move to a tropical third world country?

"It's not tropical", he said. "Lake Toba is at a high enough elevation that the climate is quite temperate. There are pine forests and you actually might need a cotton sweater on some winter evenings. It's perfect."

"Well, what about Lake George or Lake Tahoe or Lake Geneva for that matter?" I inquired.
"Those places are great, but I don't have the finances to afford property there, much less the cost of living. My wife and I can live directly on the water in a fantastic modern house here without worrying about prices or crime."

I was intrigued. My friend had always been astute and conscientious, and I respected the decisions he made. A couple months ago I flew on down to Lake Toba to meet him and see the place for myself. I was astounded to put it mildly.

Getting there proved to be a lot simpler than I had anticipated. I arrived in the magnificently modern airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I decided to stay for a few days to see what this futuristic had to offer. The secret to getting downtown, he told me, was to take the VIP train service. A valet will carry your luggage from baggage claim to the 28-minute train and from the train to a waiting Mercedes which takes you to your hotel.

After getting my SE Asian Bladerunner experience, I got on a one- hour flight to Medan, Indonesia. Medan has the feeling of being run-down. Amidst the decaying Dutch colonial buildings are modern shopping plazas. The airport is right in the center of town, so the cost of the taxi was a set price with no tip expected. I checked into the Novotel and ordered a beer and a club sandwich from room service. The sandwich was bland and mediocre, but the Bintang was pure refreshing nectar. One of the positive things about being a Dutch colony for 350 years is having a fantastic local beer.

The next morning I arranged at the hotel for an SUV with a driver to drive me down to Lake Toba. It's possible to arrange to share a van or car, but I was anxious to get down there and see what my friend had been raving about. The uniformed driver made it clear that my safety and comfort were his top priorities. I buckled up and off we went through the streets of Medan and onto the long road through farms and towns.

As we began approaching our destination, I could sense the difference. Suddenly, we were inundated with dark green hues from massive tree trunks and tall pine trees. The air was clean and crisp in my nostrils. I shut off the A/C because I was more comfortable without it. There were churches everywhere because, as my driver explained, the area all around Lake Toba is Christian. As we reached the crest of a hill, I could see clear across what I presumed was Lake Toba. It really was magnificent. Pure untouched and unblemished nature welcomed me. We rolled into Perapat, a town on the shore of the lake, and I boarded a ferry to the island of Samosir.
Once on board, I was greeted by some local guys who were keen to get me to stay at their particular hotel. I was happily surprised by their high level of English. Their sales pitches were peppered with all sorts of interesting facts about the island. Apparently, it's as large as Singapore. The guys on the boat were just as content to chat. I disembarked onto the quiet vastness of Samosir Island.

It was just as my friend had described. Majestic mountains capped by coffee plantations, a hot springs as good as any in the world to use for as long as you like, candle-lit dinners on hilltops overlooking the lake, and so much more. I was tempted to stay, but I had to get back to my real life. Or did I?
